Mississippi. I have one child, I make 55k adjusted gross income. I share joint legal custody. Yet I pay $700 per month for child support. I also have to be the sole provider of medical coverage, then pay for half of all medical, dental, vision and prescription copays. It is completely ridiculous and unfair. I often can't afford to pay my own bills and I now have ever-mounting credit debt due to trying to make ends meet. Child support is supposed to "equalize" the households to ensure the child is taken care of and needs are met. However, in a joint custody situation like ours, where the child spends a significant amount of time with both parents, there is no way the primary, by only a slight percentage of visitation time, requires or should be entitled to $700 per month from the other parent. No one should be financially ruined due to a flawed and biased system which essentially sends the wrong message. The message is...dads are the only ones who should be held responsible and accountable for a child. The mother can choose to work or not to work. To make as much as they chose or as little as they choose. Regardless of their choice, they can sleep peaceably at night knowing the father will be ordered to cover all of their expenses. Dads then have no freedoms or choices as to what they do for a living. Once the over-inflated pay dock is imposed, they're trapped. There is no longer any sort of incentive or reward for being semi-successful, hardworking man. You can spend your life working any available OT or take on a second job. But, the more you try to make...the more the state will take. Then it is redistributed to the mother. Only a small percentage actually goes to the child. There is no checks or balances as to how it is even spent. It goes to the mother as some sort of entitlement or reparation. She can do or not do whatever she chooses, all while enjoying the security of knowing her financial situation will be supplemented by as much as 25% every month.REPORT COMMENTS

Women should not be allowed to get pregnant just to exthort the man for money. This ruins ligitimate families. My fience is about to go to court and will likely have to pay child support to someone who has been proven to be mentally incompetent and physically violent just because she is the mother. Fathers need rights!REPORT COMMENTS

Child support laws have been blown out of proportion. I have been requesting a modification since three years ago due to a lesser wage. To this day nothing has been done about it! I have decided to just work for the minimum since my ex has moved on and has a new child.. my wife of 8 years and I refuse to contribute to fun and games, not telling my kids im paying and leading them to believe I'm not interested. Don't get me wrong,, she will put a restraining order on me again and send me to prison again.. and i'm planning on getting a lawyer.. as soon as i can afford one.. and catch up on my house payment! wat a joke!REPORT COMMENTS

After exiting the military, my ex pushed for child support for our now 4-year old son. Making nothing more than unemployment and still faced with bills I was ordered in court to search for a job. On the next hearing, I had successfully gotten a full time job and she was still working a 20 hour part time job. The courts ordered her to find supplemental work and the end result was of course inability to do so. As a result, I was ordered to pay support even though our custody order is 50/50 and I make more than she does. Not only outraged at that, but found that in the arrears payments I still have to pay for the time I was on unemployment as well! All faith in this legal system is lost to the unfair judgments against fathers who honestly work hard to make a better life for themselves and their children. My son enjoys telling me of the fun things he's able to do with his mom like going to amusement parks almost every week while we stay at home on my weeks since I can't afford that lifestyle.REPORT COMMENTS

My ex and I agreed to terminate all child support around Jan or Feb 2013 and we actually took the time to get the necessary paperwork get it notarized and everything. It is now Sept and we have been to court once and I was told that because she is unemployed and is claiming to be disabled, they don't want to terminate it...but I have custody of my children and she is still receiving my child support! After speaking with child support and the Attorney Generals office for the 10th time, they said OH, now all you need to do is come back in the office and sign the termination paperwork...(WTF) What was the notarized documents for? I am so confused. What in the hell do I do...Oh, yeah, you don't think that she is willing to at least help me out because I have the children and she is just sitting on her fat ass! Oh this system ****es me OFF!!!REPORT COMMENTS

My husband has had his daughter equal periods of time for the past seven years. We recently were taken back to court for more child support and child support nearly doubled. Now we pay $750 a month for a child we have 50% of the time. We also provide all clothes, shoes, activities, etc at our house and are responsible for the medical insurance as well as 80% of unpaid medical expenses. We both had to downsize vehicles to ones we could pay cash for so that the only debt we have is our house. While in the meantime the ex wife bought a $250k dollar house, a Lexus suv, a lake house, and built a barn all in the same year she took us back to court. We have a child together as well and guess what? She still hasn't gotten school clothes this year because we can't afford it. See anything wrong with this picture?REPORT COMMENTS

The child support system created over 50 years ago is no longer applicable in today's world and needs to be completely overhauled (and should be regularly to address current issues). Basing child support on the fantasy that a child should enjoy an imagined lifestyle (the one that they may have had, had the parents remained together) is impossible to quantify, unfair to the non-custodial parent, and completely useless as it is all speculation. The bio parents are not together and therefore it is not possible to gauge what may or may not have happened. Perhaps the non-custodial parent's new spouse helped put them through college...or encouraged them to seek a new, higher paying job? That certainly would not have happened had the bio parents stayed together. And yet the custodial parent certainly gets to reap the benefits of any positive advancements, while the non-custodial parent and their new family go without. Non custodial parent get a promotion? Great! Now they can pay more child support. Non-custodial parent get remarried and have another child? How DARE they! They shouldn't be allowed to have more kids when supporting another family. Wait...custodial parent got remarried and had more kids? Great! How wonderful that they were able to move-on and find happiness in the face of adversity. They now have 2 incomes plus a bonus child support payment from the ex. Lets go to DisneyWorld! Conversely, a custodial parent could, if they so chose, not work altogether and accept government assistance. The courts certainly won't make them go out and get a job under threat of jail time and license suspension. Oh no. To add insult to injury...the custodial parent has to claim...um, NO WHERE...that they even receive this extra money--unless of course they want to use it as additional income when applying for a loan. They reap all the tax benefits and don't have to claim it as income. Non-custodial parent get that burden. Fact: Married couples with children experience job-loss, health issues, accidents, car repairs and many more everyday problems that result in economic hardship to the family. What they do NOT receive is a special supplementary payment from the government to help them out when this occurs. Why is it then that a non-custodial parent is still expected to pay no matter what? Lose your job? Oh well, the best you can hope for is a reduction in current support. Get behind in child support? Awesome! Now they'll charge you enough interest to equate to a third of your entire arrears balance. Sound ridiculous? I think so too.REPORT COMMENTS

I work in child welfare and my son recently was taken to support court for his child. He pays more in child support than the state of NY pays for foster children at the special rate. My son is unable to pay for food for himself. The courts do not care about people as they collect their paychecks each week.REPORT COMMENTS
