If instead of working 11 years in the private sector and paying into Social Security + 4 years in the military, I had gone to work in the school system after school my Texas Teacher Retirement benefit would have been higher. The benefit I earned from Social Security should add to that benefit to make my retirement what it should be. Instead I am penalized because I chose a service profession and gave up higher earnings all those years. If I had worked under Social Security all those years at a higher salary my benefit would have been even greater drain on Social Security than the benefit to which I am entitled before the goverment penalizes me 40%.Dec 1st, 2010Someone from Grand Rapids, MI writes:
Where's the "fairness" in SS when some Americans can retire and make 400K or 4 million and still get 100% of their SS benefits; however, teachers in CA,TX retire and make far less than 100K and only get 40% of their SS, and when they drop dead their spouses get zero % of their SS. Where's the fairness? Ask Congress to get of their collective asses and push this fairness bill to the President so that he can sign it as he said he would.REPORT COMMENTS

Those concerned need to go to SSFAIRNESS.COM and sign up for Action Alerts which are sent out to organize focused pressure on the legislators to repeal the GPO/WEP. Is your professsonal organization cross linked with us? We are working hard to determine the best actions to take. Now it is up to you to follow through. Help us to make enough noise to restore equity to Social Security. Time is limited. Start by viewing our PowerPoint on the Local Action Page.REPORT COMMENTS

I am a teacher impacted by the Government Pension Offset(GPO) and Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP).I cannot collect widow's benefits due to the GPO(my husband paid into SS for 50 yrs) and at age 64 my Social Security - that I paid into for 29 yrs - will be reduced 40+% due to the WEP. Should I become disabled I would also not be able to collect disability due to the above mentioned laws. Pass the Social Security Fairness Act HR235 and S.484REPORT COMMENTS

Something is wrong when an issue cannot get through the committee in over 25 years. My prayer is that someone will pay attention to the SS Fairness Act 2010 and help us to reitre by being able to eat food and have electricity and possibly a telephone.REPORT COMMENTS

These antiquated laws unfairly penalize public employees and educators at a time when we need to attract teachers to the field of education. The inequity of these laws is counterproductive to recruiting potential candidates.REPORT COMMENTS
