These things should be illegal. From my last house the HOA said I owed $1200 (half for the year I moved and half for the year after I sold it). I refused to pay and they hired a debt collector who has harassed me for weeks. I never got anything but hassles from them like having a car in my driveway because our family had 3 cars and a 2 car garage. They never provided much benefit. My new home is in an areas without a HOA.REPORT COMMENTS

The staff at now two different HOA's do not support the homeowners. They have said that they sent out warning letters to fix issues, but we have not received letters. However, they seem to deliver bills every time with fees for things we didn't fix...garbage out garbage day, blinds hanging crooked, and other not picky things. The other is every time a new board is voted in they have a new idea on how to fix the community...so then everyone gets a your gutters are dirty, grass is too long, or parking in front of mailbox when picking up mail. When denied, I was advised it was because "I've given you enough already". Don't think that really matters does it? Is there a quota for CC&R requests on homeowner improvements??? I understand the importance of certain basic laws to govern a neighborhood upkeep. It is impossible to sell a home when the neighbor has not cut their grass in 2 months or has 4 cars sitting on cement blocks. But to tell someone they must have permission to improve to look of their own home or even force them to decorate a specific way on holidays is not only unamerican, i would even say... Most HOAs are run by homeowner/board members with absolutely no background in law, real estate or property management. This is what initiates much of the pettiness, quarrels and harrassment.
