I live in a neighborhood that has a fairly decent HOA, we just pay a yearly fee for some lighting and mowing in our green spaces. Although we have the few members of the Neighborhood Gestapo that always criticize other homes even though they are kept up well. Bottom line, was looking to to move to Tucson Arizona now that we are retired. My God, when I checked out the nice homes I wanted to buy, they were in the most horrible HOA's imaginable. Some even wanted the power to go onto your back yard and make sure you didn't have any violations such as the wrong lawn furniture, satellite dish etc.. HOA's are a bane to our society, seems they are run by people who are just plain power crazy. Now I have to spend more time and money to find a place that has no HOA or build on property that is a little more remote. Congress, ABOLISH HOA RULE, it is Un-American .

Due to financial hardship, I had to sell my Condo that resides within a community controlled by not 1 but 2 HOA's. As a result have had to pay over $1,000 dollars in document fee's and inspection Fee's to these two HOA's in order to sell 'MY' own home. I almost couldn't afford to sell it! This is ridiculous and must be stopped!

These HOAs are a nightmare. People have to deal with legal fees for probable cause and basic legal rights from yet another entity. They aren't going to make it in Arizona, mark my words.

HOAs do nothing to help property values that local laws already don't do. No neighbor should have this much power over another neighbor. Your choice of paint color is not my concern. If your trash impedes on my property, that's already actionable and an HOA is not necessary.

http://www.hoasavers.com/properties.html Can you send this link to the signers...it has a survey that is educational on the HOA Industry...and may be useful in getting laws changed. Equalization is needed to protect owners and give them more rights.

My HOA nearly killed me with the stress I had from them tormenting me. No one that paints their home gray (an earth tone), should have had to endure the 3 years of legal battles I had to face. Please help us stuck in these illegal, UnAmerican HOA's where Freedom is lost.

It's sad what our country has turned into with unaccountable people dictating to us how we live and enjoy our properties. In my HOA, we are not allowed to "operate loud and/or smoky vehicles on the property". What gives them this right? In what way do they think they have the right to tell ME that i can't run a 67 Chevy on MY property?

I am a property manager in Spanaway, WA. Just last year I had a tenant come into the office to report malicious harassment inflicted upon them by the local HOA. This harassment included: * Breaking into a tenant's car. His excuse for doing this was that the car was unlocked and that he was "just trying to ensure community safety". Not sure why that meant he was okay to get into the tenant's center console, though. The HOA president later threatened the tenant that he had personal information including his SSN, full name, and date of birth (all acquired from looking through documents in the tenant's car) and would be using them against him. * Peering through the windows and knocking on the door at all hours of the day and night. The tenant had a teenage daughter (16) and on numerous occasions the HOA president was seen deliberately looking into her window specifically. The tenant installed security cameras and found that every day while he was at work a member of the HOA would circle the home and look into the property. * Climbing over a fence to get a picture of an "aggressive dog". The HOA present then threatened to shoot the dog. The tenant was terrified because his young children played in the backyard with the dog, and he feared that the president would shoot at the dog and accidentally harm or kill a child. * A neighbor (friend of the HOA president) had parked in a way that the tenant was unable to access his driveway. The tenant was then fined $300 for parking on the street. These are clearly some extreme examples, but this individual (the HOA president) felt it was not only his right, but his DUTY, to harass this tenant day and night because of his position on the HOA board. People like him - who love lording their power over innocent people - are RAMPANT in HOAs and are completely intolerable. There is no reason for them to exist.

As a property manager i HATE hoa's as a whole. The idea of trying to protect property values is all fine and dandy, but allowing a handful of bored tyrants with no legal experience impose fines and lien houses because they don't like the way your car looks or the style of fence you put up is ridiculous beyond measure. The punishments in these situations never come close to fitting the "crime". I got a notice today that an hoa is fining a client $130 because the hoa saw their garbage cans one time. This sure doesn't feel like freedom anymore.
