When I moved to Florida in 1987 after one year I began looking to buy a house. I went to the Library and pulled real estate adds for 5 years ago and 10 years ago, I was curious. Hands down both 5 and 10 year subdivisions with HOAs were in great shape. Subdivisions without HOAs had boats in driveways, no grass, cars on blocks and noticeable disrepair on some homes. The differences were night and day. I bought in a subdivision with and HOA. I am on the HOA board, its 20 years now. We had at one point a member who was gastapo-like. She estimated the number of weeds in lawns. It was bad We ousted her. A moderate board is best, no too hard core and no lazafaire. You will regret not having an HOA. Blackstone at Amberly HOA, Cary NC theydont even fix the cracked with huge pothole on the road asking to seed weed even there is weed, last time i saw a guy with a boat on his property and he got mail from HOA and had to move his boat to a storage about a year later he moved out. they come after me one thing to another and another even my property is clean and has many wild cute rabbits and squirrels relaxing on my property. they just want to threaten and charge high fees, fuking endless, total rip off and garbage. Most of them are retired or have serious mental health & emotional issues with regard to control & bullying. The number of rules and restrictions these HOA Trustees make up, on good days makes me feel like I am in a Nazi state. On a bad day, it makes me feel miserable that I am part of a human race. My condo trustees are my neighbour and she is controlling, emotionally manipulative ( oh look I am so good because I do so much for the community but when I bark or bite they better bow to me in obedience.) and a pathetic excuse for a human being, She is also 70 years old.REPORT COMMENTS

The HOA in my community promise the pool for over 2 years and still has not done anything and only has collected money from all the residence in the community. They have not been able to even show where the money is going, they have no power to do anything since the roads are owned by the County and so are the lights but yet we're still charged for them. I can't stand having somebody else tell me what to do at my place and I have no position to tell others what to do with theirs. We have to call them what they are and they're nothing more of than Ponzi schemes, designed to take your money and do nothing for it. Plus people are forced to sign an agreement to have an h o a and their community otherwise they will not be able to have the house they want. As a first home buyer, I find HOAs making it difficult to actually own a home because they have created restrictive communities. I need to own my property and be able to dictate what I can do to my home and not be subjected to their authority. HOAs need to go. Home Owners Associations ( HOA) are not required to go through a court to foreclose, as a property owner would to evict a tenant. That is the constant threat for not following the rules. It is much easier for a HOA to put a lien on, and take your home than it is for a bank or mortgage lender to do it. HOA's do not have to follow the same restrictions as a bank would. HOA should be abolished and is a total scam. This is a sad case in Florida. So many great properties in foreclosure. I just chose not to buy a whole bunch of properties just because of HOA. HOA drastically reduces the value of a property not increase it because very few wants to buy them. Price is decided based on demand not on how nice the lawn is. Telling others what they can and cannot do should be illegal. As long it does not hurt you. If your neighbor keeps trash and junk he has every right to do so. May be he cannot afford to clean up. If he trespasses into your land then by all means he violated a law and should be prosecuted.
