Let doctors work with patients to control pain. What do legislators know about individual patients???

My husband has been disabled (legally) for 4 years, but his disability began over 10 years ago from a severe back injury. He has subsequently had 4 back surgeries, including a full 360 spinal fusion of L1/S5 and now suffers with FBSS (failed back surgery syndrome). He has seen his pain management Dr.'s as recommended, without fail, lapse or abuse for many years now. We HATE that opioid medication is the only thing that brings even moderate daily relief (YES, he's tried the implanted spinal cord stim, physical therapy, injections, massage, chiro--ALL OF IT). Now, because unscrupulous drug users/addicts AND irresponsible doctors are choosing to abuse the system, my husband has suddenly been subjected to unfair scrutiny, discrimination and mistreatment by a new "watchdog" doctor that abrubtly took over his case from the caring pain physician who he's been seeing for several years. He carelessly (without even reading his medical history) dropped my husband's pain medication to a level that can cause dangerous and debilitating withdrawal symptoms, & is completely ineffective in controlling his pain. My husband is a GOOD, LAW-ABIDING citizen; he is NOT an addict, or an abuser of opioids! He is a 47 year old husband and father who, while working hard to provide for his family, was injured on the job. He did not ask for this. He did not expect to have to live the rest of his life on pain medication. Even with the help of opioids, he will NEVER be completely pain-free. However, with proper pain management care and medication, he could at least try to live with some measureable amount of joy and function. On the "good days", I could still see a glimmer of hope in my husband who, through no fault of his own, is now suffering because the DEA is unwilling or unable to make sure that innocent patients are not being persecuted and undertreated because of the abuse of others. I am heartbroken for my husband, and at a loss of what to do. The "good days" are much fewer and far between now....

I feel like my freedom from pain is being taken from me. I have spent 21 years of my youth in bed due to pain. Please don't allow me to suffer more pain. I have never been a drug addict , yet the drug addicts are getting Methadone to cope, is that fair.

I have never done opiates, and I have never had chronic pain. I do understand that the war on drugs creates countless innocent victims every day and this is one of the ways.

I suffer from horrible pain from Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, as well as from several secondary syndromes, such as pelvic congestion syndrome. Opioids are the only thing that allow me to continue working and being a productive member of society, and despite the medications, I still have a very high rate of absences...I can't imagine that I would be able to hold down a job without them, and I can't afford to pay my mortgage on disability, if I even qualified (since my disease is so rare). All I want is to be able to work and make it to my doctor appointments, and there is no way that I would be able to do these things unmedicated - I'm barely scraping by on the low doses that I'm getting. Please remember that there are REAL people out there in chronic pain, and that taking away their pain meds equates to taking away their ability to live any kind of life where they are not housebound.

I have had chronic pain after having brain surgery in 2005. I have been on the same pain medicine all these years and have never abused it. If folks abuse these drugs, doctors should put their energy into educating patients that have the potential for abuse. Not stopping the treatment for real patients like myself that pain has taken over my daily life. I am responsible and so are most patients that have chronic pain. We just want to live out our life with less pain and suffering. To do this, it would be like taking alcohol off all the shelves all over the US because of the alcohol related deaths. Not all people abuse alcohol and not all people abuse medications. If they take away this decision for doctors to treat real pain patients, then they will suffer a catastrophic blow mentally because they will feel that no one cares about them or their pain. By the looks of the new guidelines, it seems that this is their goal. Certain types of pain are only relieved by opioid medications. Central pain or pain that originates from the central nervous system is the most difficult to treat and thoae meds should be reserved for those types of pain. But sending patients off with high doses of Motrin and Tylenol will only yield more deaths, from kidney and liver failure. I hope they realize this is the wrong way to do things.

My 77 year old mother suffers from chronic pain as a result of injuries. She can no longer the increased costs of pain meds in recent months. Horrific. She should not be blamed for the problem. She is someone in need of support. Instead, we shame her. Shame on us.

How can you possibly think what you are doing to me (us) is really going to change things?? All you are doing is making me (us) suffer and making the addicts more dangerous for society! Mark my words, the drug dealers are only going to get more dangerous and more innocent ppl will get caught in the cross fire! Why are my rights being taken away because I have an incurable disease that causes chronic pain and need to use this medication to make my quality of life a little better when I didn't ask for it...am I supposed to suffer because you people can't figure out a better way to stop the addicts/dealers?? You can find an international fugitive in a hole in the ground in Iraq but you can't figure out where the real problem lies with this issue....c'mon ppl....get it together and get it right before you have millions of chronic pain sufferers suffering even more, families will suffer, businesses will suffer, etc! Walk a day in our shoes and then decide!

Making rules that negatively effect my health .... Is a violation of my right to adequate healthcare. the fact that my personal healthcare is now shared (without my consent) with my pharmacy is illegal. I decide who gets access to my medical records and or medical issues. It is not the business of anyone but my doctor and me. You have created a society that stomps on those chronically ill and in chronic pain. Causing more suicides due to the fact people are unable to live in pain. Shame on the US government for setting us back 50 years. I'm ashamed of my government and how they have dealt with this. I'm suffering relentlessly and all the Governmwnt is worried about is addicts. Thank you for putting your political goals ahead of my health.

I suffer with CRPS. I'm highly allergic to aspirin, nsaids, steriods, a bunch of antibiotics. What choice do I have to help control the pain of CRPS? I hate taking hydrocodone and only take it when I can't stand the pain any longer, some days are more intense than others. I'd like nothing more than to be free from this pain and until late there is a cure or it goes away, I'm not left with a whole lot of options.

I have a brain tumor. I also have a neuro muscular disease called dystonia that causes continuous muscle contractions. I have a connective tissue disease called Ehlers Danlos syndrome. I have osteoarthritis. The pain from the wear & tear of all of this is more than I can tolerate without the help of medication. Recently my pain management clinic stopped prescribing meds to any of their patients. I couldn't even get a muscle relaxant. My insurance company had to find me a new pain management doctor and they said there is only one physician left in my area who is prescribing medication for pain patients. How is this helping us?

I have chiari 1 malformation and am in non-stop pain. I have tried various forms of pain control but, as my medical professionals say, this medical issue doesn't respond well to pain meds they would give others. However, I am also closely watched by medical people to be sure of no dependency. My docs know my problems, and they are on top of it and Washington and organizations that don't meet me or have a good knowledge of my unusual problem shouldn't have a vote. My meds are safe and can't be easily stolen. I am being punished for people that are doing wrong as it is an easy target. I am not the problem. You want to save people, don't take away the medications that allow them some life, that keep them screaming/crying from pain.

I wouldn't wish Mastocytosis on anyone, but I would like to see the officials that put an undo burden on the health system, have to cope for just one week with it.....they would sing a different tune. I think our country needs to legalize any and all methods of pain relief.
