I need help on my student loan bills. When i got off of active duty i had to work two jobs just to take care of my family. Everytime i got able to go to school something else would come up. 20 years later i finally finished college now i need two jobs again to repay student loans. Thanks Uncle Sam, i am paying for school twice.

I was under the impression that my GI Bill was good. That was until I tried to use it and discovered it had a 10 year expiration date. Had I known, I would have used it. I agree with if it wasn't used then pay back any money paid into the program.

I lost my GI bill because I waited too long - sure I knew it would expire but I needed to be working to cover bills! If you paid into it you should get what you have coming, it just seems like another way for the government to mess with veterans.

10 years out, after transition, family, kids, divorce, new careers, foreclosure, recession, back on my feet...and my benefits are unusable now. They keep making the new GI Bill larger to get more people to sign up, but they just leave every one of us tossed to the side.

We paid for it, we should be able to use it when we want, that or send us the money we paid into it.

I would have a degree right now if this didn't expire after 10 years. I put raising a family before my education and now that my kids are grown I would love to go back to school.

Because I didn't use my GI Bill within the 10 years allotted, I incurred 20K of ED Loans. I actually was able to return back to school 10 thru 14 years after Honorable discharge and was told I was not eligible to use my GI benefits. Now I owe 20K, so much for being a Veteran. What a rip off? why is there a time limit? Life sometimes doesn't let plans pan out, Semper Fi...

When I got out of the service I had a family to take care of. Not only should I be allowed to use my GI Bill whenever I am ready, I should be able to transfer it to my wife or children whenever I want to! I paid for it. But, the rules say it has expired, and it can only be transfered to a spouse or child during active duty, and only if you sign up for 4 more years. Why is it o.k to treat Veterans like this, yet people who have never served can live, and go to school for free?

I really wish I had access to the benefits I never used. I was employed most of the 10 years after military service so I never need the benefits. now I have been laid off and cant afford to go to school. It is not right that I cant use these benefits that I paid for now

Two years ago, I was in exactly the same position as Travis. I served my country, and received an honorable discharge. I was laid off in 2007 from a job that I loved. I needed more education to re-enter the workforce again. When I tried to use my GI-Bill, I was told that it was too late! I have to pay for school, even though I qualified for education through my service. How is this fair? If we receive benefits, we should be allowed to use them when we need them, and not in a specified amount of time. Life happens, circumstances change. We often need to retrain or change careers. If we expect America to stay strong, we should make education a priority ALL the time.

I served 10 years and my Mont. and my GI Bill benefits expired last year. I paid for most of my Bachelor's Degree while in the service with the Service kicking in 25% TA but no money for books or fees. Using GI Bill benefits while in the service was not available until 1999, so I was able to only use it for about 5 of my classes then. Even with that, I only used about 8 of my 36 months of my GI Bill at a PART-TIME rate. So much attention is being paid to Post 9/11 GI Bill folks that past veterans seem to fall by the wayside. Not everyone has the time to just get out of the Service and go to college and now many folks get their Bachelors in the Service or enter with some college or some even have a Bachelors when the go in the Military. The Post 9/11 GI Bill now lets veterans pass their unused GI Bill Benefits on to their kids or spouse who use it to go to school full-time (which will bankrupt the system), unlike many veterans who can only go part-time because they work. I see the need here, but not at the expense of older veterans. At most, the GI Bill only covers 60% of an education, which is better than nothing, but still inadequate considering all the government grants and scholarships out there at the same rate. However, I don't think that 60% should go to kids or spouses and if at all, if it the child or spouse of a deceased or 30% disabled vet. Its sort of the 'robbing Peter to pay Paul' mentality. Long-story short, non-retired veterans who pay into the GI Bill, regardless of when, should have the program available to them for life, up to the 36 month limit. Period. It is one of the few benefits we get and its a slap in the face to not provide it otherwise.
