Agree with the masses, the GI Bill benefits shouldn't expire, life catches up once you return to normal life and not everyone is able to drop everything again and goto school. No we have time but no money. It was earned and shouldn't have an expiration date.REPORT COMMENTS

I have the same scenario. I think it's sad that we serve this country faithfully. We are discharged with commitments and responsibilities, but when we are ready to further our education these restrictions are placed on it.REPORT COMMENTS

I think it is a shame after serving this fine country when one get out for what ever reason the military washes it's hands of you. I am a disable veteran (woman) with 12 years in of honorable service to the United States Navy and there are presently no available programs or benefits to aid me to further my education. Like a fellow veteran stated (Rick of AZ), life happens and we are unable to take advantage of our benefits when Uncle Sam say we should. Why is it that when we in the literal sense, put our personal time, life and time not spent with our families on the line to serve this great nation we get shafted but men and women in the Senate get life time benefits even if they do not serve their whole term? Never stepped out in the field to risk their life but there you have it. That is outrageous! How is our nation supporting us who gave so much and many their very lives? We have been done wrong here and this is a major injustice to the lot of us. it really saddens me.REPORT COMMENTS

I separated in 1995 with an Honorable Discharge. The job I started as a Network Administrator was very demanding. I was applying to Devry which was right across the street but I couldn't attend due to workload. Within four years I was a Manager. I was a U.S. Regional I.T. Manager in 2007 when the economy dove and I was downsized. I haven't been able to recover that kind of position since then because of no degree. If the Government wants to help employment in this country then granting us our benefits when we need them is crucial.REPORT COMMENTS

No, it should never expire and it should not be counted as months attended at college. It should be paid out untill all funds are exhausted. My husband split his GI Bill ( after paying in) amongst our kids. They attend the community college here. Due to the messed up curriculum and schedule, they are unable to exhaust the credits and finish their degree plan in 18 mo as guarnteed by the college. Not to mention that if not considered a full time student, b/c of lack or overlapping classes, they loose their health insurance. 26 years in the service, still active and that is how our heros, best of the best get treated. This is a shame and I am writing our congress man..... not change it and make every elected official having to serve at least one enlistment in the military, prior to taking office, any office. I was in the same boat. First of all I was unaware the benefits expired after 10 years and I was going to Graduate school and they stopped and I could not afford it so had to stop. When my GI Bill was terminated I had 22 months and 1 day left of benefits. It is not right. I spent 22 years serving our country and there are circumstances once you retire that keeps you from going to school and the clock ticks. We earned these benefits and they shouldn't stop just because 10 years has gone by. I am 60 years old and still want to get my Masters Degree and there's nothing wrong with that but I can't afford the tuition alone. I think it is a slap in the face of veterans all over that earned these benefits and should be able to use them until your entitlement runs out. Not based on years. Just another way of not saying welcome home. Veterans slowly get neglected regardless of their service to this country, but yet the goverment will give away money to people that don't want to work that can and just want to sponge off the government for their food, rent , cars etc etc, but a veteran rates below that in the governments eyes. Shame on you all.REPORT COMMENTS

After my service, I had to go to work to pay the bills. Finding time for college wasn't an option. But now, when I am in good situation to go to school, by 10 year window will only only 2 semesters in benefits. But if I had kids, they could get free benefits with no window? I say flip the scenario. Give us actual veterans the unlimited window to use our benefits, and give the relatives the smaller time frame.REPORT COMMENTS

Benefits shouldn't expire until the benefit amount is exhausted. When I got out of the Navy in 1988 I was told I was not eliglble because I did not have money taken out for education assistance. In 2009 I learned that I was eligible however it was past the 10 yr deadline.REPORT COMMENTS
