Post 9/11 GI Bill benefits shouldn't expire, we earned them. Things come up in life that prevented me from using it all in 15 years, including having a child. It really isn't fair to take it away

As an adviser in education, I come across so many veterans that want to go to school to better themselves; however, due to the fear of loans, rejection, and/or whatever else they run away. Moreover, they believe that they are still entitled to the GI Bill that he or she paid into. I never have the courage to give any bad news; therefore, I advise him or her to call the VA hotline. I cringe when I hear of veterans getting passed over for a deserved promotion because they do not have a piece of paper but know the job the best. There are approximately 900,000 unemployed veterans and this number is outrageous to me. I can only imagine how the GI Bill could help these veterans not only get a job, but get a sense of pride, confidence, and a sense of purpose. Stop the ridiculous expiration and allow the veterans to make the choice of using a benefit that was promised and paid into. Semper Fidelis means a lot to me and taking out the expiration rule across the board will show that our representatives are faithful to all service members.

I was deployed to Persian Gulf & Operation Restore Hope / Operation Continued Hope in Somalia I like a lot of Veterans had my life turned upside down due to PTSD & other service connected injuries after I was Honorably Discharged in 1996. It has been a long hard road since then but I have worked hard to try to have a somewhat normal life. I am not writing this looking for pity. What I am writing this comment is to remind congress that there was Veterans who served honorably and many was put in harms way Post Vietnam & before 911. It seems that anyone who served Post Vietnam / Pre 911 have been forgotten and our sacrifices have been marginalized by our government & the American public in general to the present day. I was promised when I paid into the GI Bill that I would be able to use it when I needed to. I was never told that I would have a arbitrary expiration date to use it by and if I didn't the DOD would legally steal my buy in money. There should be no expiration date on MGIB.

For those of us who served in the military during peace times, access to VA Health Benefits, Protected Veterans Status for Employment purposes, or a host of other benefits are unattainable. Many veterans who served during times of conflict, without actually serving in a life threatening role, are eligible for these benefits. All military personnel joined with the understanding that they may be called to sacrifice, and are willing to potentially give their lives to protect the freedoms of our country. We were trained to fight and were ready to answer the call if needed. As it turned out, we were not needed. The result being: our time in the military no longer is relevant. We are invisible veterans for all intents and purposes. Not only are we ineligible for free veterans benefits, but we also loose the one benefit we paid in to with our hard earned money. Some of those monies we earned serving overseas and far from our loved ones. That benefit was lost to us because there was an arbitrary expiration date placed on it. For many of us who contributed to the Monthomery GI Bill, the demands of life got in the way and we were unable to use it in the allotted time. Later in life, when circumstances changed, we found ourselves at a point where we could go back to school and use our schooling benefits, but they were gone. Does our service to our country mean so little? It would appear so. We are the unrecognized, unseen, unimportant veterans.

I didn't realize and was never told that my GI bill would expire (Active Duty 1987-1991) I did not use any of the benefit. I paid extra money every month into the GI bill and I dont understand why this benefit would ever expire. How can a benefit that we earned expire? Please fix this.

Its now 20 years after I served, I have been laid off and am now looking to further my education. I looked into the GI bill and to be honest it surprised me that they expired. I did not serve just for an education, in fact that was an afterthought. I would posit that many of us who served for reasons aside from education never gave it an afterthought when we were discharged and went into fields we had been trained for, all the time not knowing they expired. These benefits aren't free. We pay for them while we serve. Why should they expire when the money paid in earns them interest all those years.

I am a veteran who "do to life's circumstances" let my Montgomery GI Bill benefits expire. The VA comes out with new research and advise for veterans because re-entering civilian life can be arduous. Yet, the educational benefits are limited to 10 or 15 years. Veterans without disability have only the VA home loan (which is more expensive than a market loan) as a benefit. Let our vets use the benefits they had earned and support this effort.

This also happened to me. I am desperately hoping to get an education since my good civilian career derailed in 2008. I was always under the impression that I had ten years to use this benefit that I paid into once I began using it. Once my life circumstances finally stabilized to go to school again, I learned I had only six months left to use them. I feel very cheated.

The service provided to our country is what earned veterans the right to GI Bill. Many of us after exiting the military did not go to or complete school due to various reasons. Your benefits as a congressman or woman do not expire, why do ours?

I'll try to be short and sweet. I exited the Army in Germany doing a ?European Out.? I managed to take a few courses with The University of Maryland Europe and then a few more courses where I was stationed in California after that, and then back to Europe where I continued to take courses with the University of Maryland Europe. There were no instructor lead courses available for me to take that I needed. Everything was in the wrong field of study. I suffer from diagnosed PTSD and had an extremely hard time attending courses during this time period. When I finally made it back to the United States my 10 year window was/is up. So I can no longer access over $20,000 dollars left in my Montgomery GI Bill. Due to my particular situation (and many other veterans in similar social anxiety situations) I should be able to continue my education using the GI Bill money that I joined the military for in the first place. I gave myself to the Army and suffered traumatic injuries and now I am being told that I can?t even use the benefits that earned during my service. Please fix this for all Veterans.

I served from 1994-2005. When I separated I was concerned about getting a job and holding it. Getting on my feet. I was unable to use my GI Bill as afraid of losing my job by going to School. I earned my educational benefits and put in the money into the GI Bill. I earned this. I served mostly deployed with the Navy where as a Cook I was too busy working to get the free school like many of the others in the Navy. My job did not allow me like after I left. We deserve better. An education and the ability to get by and pay our bills while going to School is the key reason I was hesitant in using my GI Bill and going to School then.

I do agree that the GI BIll that I paid for should not expire after 10 years or the Army should give me my money back. I wanted to go to school but it just did not work out in those 10 years. Now I can go but my GI BIll is no good. P

Happened to me. Paid $1200 into the GI Bill system then went back to college and earned my degree after the 10 year period. I now have 48k in loan debt. Why does this expire? Can I at least get the $1200 applied toward the loans?

Did 10 yrs active duty, deployed 3 times through Ops Desert Storm and Shield. I've raised 4 children through Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, coached baseball and soccer, transported countless kids going camping, canoeing, hiking and out of state games. In other words, living life. Now that my family no longer demands the bulk of my non-work time, it makes the most sense to go back to school. It's not just about the money. The military is all about planning and logistics. Who in their right mind would PLAN to leave the service to help raise their children, just to turn around and run off to school when you get off work? It makes no logistical sense. Squeaky wheel gets the grease. Let people know what's happening.

I was medically discharged from the U.S. Marines. My GI bill payments had already been made. After 5 years on the TDRL (temporary disabled retired list), I was transferred to the PDRL and medically retired permanently. Due to my health struggles, I was not able to use my GI Bill benefits. Over time, I have stabilized and am no longer burdened by the tasks of caring for young children. I am more than interested in using my military educational benefits, but I have surpassed the 10 year mark.

This is an injustice to those who potentially sacrifice the utmost! Come on America do the right thing. Its amazing that those who could lose the most "their lives" should also lose benefits that they paid for. There should be no expiration date for the G.I. Bill period.
