I had a similar situation. It's been 13 years since I separated from active duty, and only 6 since I separated from active reserves. Now I'm being denied GI Bill benefits. Why do they expire? I did my time!

It may take them 10 years to be able to reaclimate themselves back to the real world since we do not take care of them properly upon return.

I am one of the many who upon leaving active duty could not use my GI Bill/ACF benefits, I tried, but while I was trying to go through all the red tape to enroll, real life happened and I had to concentrate on working. I agree with making your 10 year window begin AFTER you start receiving benefits.

Veteran benefits should not expire. I signed up to serve our country specifically for college assistance, however was not able to use the benefits until later and was sad to find out that it expires after 10 yrs.

We paid into this. The program can collect interest on the money. I was not able to go to school until now. GI Bill only covers part of your education expenses not all.

I'm a 48 yrs old U.S Navy Veteran unemployed from my civilian job and would like to go back to school. My GI bill that I never used expired in 2002 after 10 yrs of my honorable discharge. I agree with the petition, it should expire 10 yrs after its first use, or even better to never expire.

Many of us were not able to take full advantage of our educational benefits while trying to raise a family. Allowing us to use any unused educational benefits to achieve a degree may help us to increase our chances of becoming employed.

I AM A GULF WAR VET AND I FEEL AS THOUGH THESE BENEFITS SHOULD NOT EXPIRE BECAUSE WE FOUGHT FOR OUR COUNTRY AND THAT IS THE LEAST THEY CAN DO FOR US IS PAY FOR OUR EDUCATION. IF IT WASN'T FOR THE VETERANS THAT FOUGHT NO ONE WOULD BE ABLE TO GET THE EDUCATION THEY WANT.DURING THE TIME OF 90'S TIME WEREN'T AS ADVANCED AS THEY ARE NOW AND BEING A LITTLE OLDER , I NEED TO GO BACK AND FUTHER MY EDUCATION TO BE MARKETABLE IN THE WORK FORCE. tHEY DON'T WANT TO GIVE US YHE BENEFITS WE DESERVE OR THE EDUCATION WE NEED , SO WHERE DOES THAT LEAVE US ? TO HELP END HOMELESSNESS FOR VETERANS YOU CAN START BY HELPING GET THE EDUCATION WE NEED TO BE ABLE TO GET A JOB AND GET OFF THE STREET.

Agreed! "These benefits should not expire for any reason. We lived up to our commitments in the military and contributed to the GI Bill, shouldn't we at least be able to take our time and use it when we are able to?"

I'm just now finding myself in this same boat. Had a family to take care of when I got out. Went straight to work. Laid off last year. I want to use the benefits that I payed for, but they are GONE! This is not welfare, this is not a handout, this is not a social benefits program. This is a promise to us that was more than paid for with money and risks by those of us who earned it. Treating veterans like this will reflect directly on the future of our military's strenght. "The willingness with which our young people are likely to serve in any war, no matter how justified, shall be directly proportional to how they perceive the Veterans of earlier wars were treated and appreciated by their nation." - George Washington

There should not be a shelf life on benefit we had to pay into. At my time of seperation I was lucky to find work. Now I could use the benefit but it is expired. Even a 1200 dollar reimbursement would help. I think the government has collected enough interest.

I spent 5 years taking care of my ill mother. and 4 years making a career. 1 year back in school. Now my ebefits expire..though I have like 25 month left on my GI bill benefits I cannot use them because the 10 year time limit is up! This is wrong. Give us time atleast equal to the 15 years of the post 9/11 GI bill. It is only fair. Had 9/11 happened when we were on active duty we would have honorably served. Don't punish us now because we weren't.

Education Benefits should not expire ,especially since no-one makes the effort to explain it to you at the time when you are getting out of the Military. On a just so you know basis.
