I used some of my GI Bill benefits (approximately 12 months worth). Life got in the way of me using the rest and I was told my benefits expired and that is that...I could fight it but haven't we been trying to fight this thing?

I'm in the same situation as described. I was not able to attend school within the 10 year period. I should not be penalized for this. I still served my country for four years - with no expiration!

I myself am a vet; I work with formerly homeless veterans, and many want to go back to school, but can not due to losing access to benefits while being on the streets. I believe that once a person serves, he/she has the right to choose when and how to use those benefits without expiration. It isn't difficult to see that many of todays veterans struggle upon re-entry into civilian world, and it takes some much more than 3 years to gain their footing. Let's not cut corners here and shortchange our vets--there is a ton of experience, and both our vets and society as a whole would benefit from making expiration obsolete.

We need to fight for our rights and we need more people to petition congress on the 10 year GI Bill delimiting date. They should never expire as long as you have benefits left. It is not always convenient to go when they think you should and you practially have beg to get what is owed to you. You earned it.

I Retired in 1994 and it just so happened I had to wait to later to pursue my degree. I received my BA in 1997 and had gone back to college to get my Masters Degree. I was enrolled and actively pursuing my personal goal to get my Masters Degree and had to stop because my GI Bill expired in 2004 and I still had 21 months on benefits remaining. I wanted desperately to get my Masters Degree but couldn't afford to go after my GI bill Expired. I spent 22 years earning my benefits and they shouldn't expire. It is not right. I protected my country for 22 years and deserve every month of GI Bill I earned. I am now 61 years old and still have the desire to increase my knowledge. It is a personal goal I set for myself that I couldn't accomplish while on active duty due to mission requirements. I earned it all and then some and it should not expire until you use what is owed and promised to you. The military or VA does not tell you about the 10 year delimiting date until after the fact. It is never explained to you upon retirement. Had I known I would have done things differently. It is totally unfair and should be changed. I had a personal goal that I was unable to obtain thanks to the military I proudly served for over a third of my life. There should be a little justice in favor of those that honorably served our country for so many years. The delimiting act should be repealed and benefits restored as appropriate. It's the least our government could do.

There are reasons why people do not use them right away because of responsibilities and commitments. They should be for a lifetime! They put their lives on the line for America, they deserve at least this much!

Those who have provided military service for our country should be able to receive the benefits of that service. They have fought for us, so that we didn't have to. Freedom is not free. It costs more than money. It costs lives, blood, sweat and tears. There should not be an expiration date on the benefits they receive for the service they have done.

I would argue that the scope of this petition is too narrow. Education costs are extortionate compared to what the GI BIll currently schedules out. I do agree that there should be no end-date for the GI Bill. Further, it was a robust GI Bill that allowed those returning from WWII to create a golden age for the US. I am saddened and not a little bothered that 'supporting the troops' seems to stop as soon as the words pass from lips. There is an economic benefit to have Veterans back in school that will payback the investment made. I, for one, am tired of lip service and this would be but the smallest step to bring Veterans fully back into the Society that we shed blood, sweat, limbs, and psyche for.

While in service to our Country, our military personnell have the opportunity to contribute toward the GI Bill for their continued education after completion of service. Many times, our Veterans do not try to take advantage of this educational benefit until it is too late. The GI Bill is something that the service individual has invested in, like a life insurance policy. Much like an insurance policy it should expire only upon the death of the service member. Our men and women devote years of their lives to perform a service that most Americans will never understand. They perform this service so that we will NOT have to endure what they are enudring. It is therefore my belief that we should reward their years of service and suffering with a guarentee of education upon their discharge. In this way, we can help them and our society by assisting in their education and re-integration into our work force.
