I can't believe I am in this situation. Absolutely destroying my life, future and mental health. I had a drunken one night stand - not even embarrassed by it anymore. I did not know this woman, she contacted me and told me she decided she was going to have this child. I told her I do not have a choice. I am forced into being a father. Except I am nothing but a huge paycheck for her. My paycheck is garnished to the tune of 65% before taxes. I actually was order to pay more than 65% of my pre- tax wages and arrears just keep going up. I have yet to hear how someone like myself pays close to 2k a month for 1 child. I am a mechanic. I can't afford to buy a decent car to get to work. Now because I am in arrears I am being threatened to have my license suspended. Also they are going to report me to the Credit Bureau. How that makes sense as the soul bread winner to take my license away and prevent me from working. Guess I don't need a decent car anymore. I wouldn't have the credit to buy it anyway. Hopelessness is closing in. The real kicker is she does not work and doesn't have to. I have no contact with her because I don't even know who she is except she gets a nice fat check from me. I can not support myself. She also took off to another country started working and didn't tell the child support agency that she was working. Does she get reprimanded for lying and deceiving - sounds like a crime to me. She does not get threatened, or treated like a criminal - I pay almost 2000 a month for 1 child. No one I have met here and anywhere pays that - not even for 3 or more children. I guess the government will take my license and I'll lose my job end up going to jail and I guess thats how the problem is solved. Maybe I'll die in jail. Then the child will receive no money and she will actually have to work. Why is it a mother can not be forced against her will to take care of child or even be a mother if she doesn't want to . Men have no choice. I can understand if I were married to this person but it was a terrible one night stand. She is angry that I didn't want to be with her. That is crazy. She is vindictive, angry, bitter and taking me to the cleaners. The government supports this and tears me down. How does that help the child? Whom as I said left country- as if I could afford to fly to another country to visit my son. Oh I can't - my passport has been suspended. Way to go the corrupt judicial system - the lawyers that feed off of the insane child support system and if your going to call me a dead beat go ahead soon I won't be able to pay a dime. I am a hard working man. I don't see an end and this person I don't know will lie all the way to the bank for 17 more years. It does not seem that the child is going to benefit from this situation. If my payments were more reasonable - then I wouldn't be in arrears. It's not like I am not willing to pay. I don't know why I bother. Children are used by mentally illREPORT COMMENTS

I really feel their needs to be some kind of statute of limitations regarding a woman being able to come after a man for child support for a kid she told him was not his to begin with. She lied her parents threatened him so he went on his way, keep in mind he was 18. We meet get married have six girls and 13 years later she contacts him on fb telling him " oh by the way, your son wants to meet you" . Umm and now he's 17 and she is coming after us for child support. Granted we have yet to get the dna test which will be soon, but how can a court of law say ok you have to pay for this kid you didn't know about for 13 years, after she took it upon herself to keep him in the dark and lie. We have lived in the same county as the woman for 15 of the 17'years we've been married. The kid is 17. I think it's very unfair that he should have to support this kid when she took it upon herself to make sure he didn't know about him. Basicly the laws say that she can do what ever she wants and wreck his family and he's just screwed. I do not see how he should be liable for a kid he didn't know was his. There needs to be a law that the mother has 2 years after the birth of a baby to contact the bio dad or she forfeits her rights to get support. If no contact can be made they should be put on the list to be found. This woman "if you want to call her that" made no attempt to find my husband for 13 years yet was stalking us, giving me details of the birth of my last baby, telling me things that happened throughout our at the time 13 year marriage and new all my girls names, but yet could not contact us. How is this legal ? And how is ok for her to throw a wrecking ball into our lives.REPORT COMMENTS

Unfair Child support is part of why some people commit suicide. They cannot afford to live, eat, support their new family?s and some are homeless. Something really needs to be changed. Every family has a unique circumstance that should be looked at individually. It is not a one size fits all. We have my husband?s daughter at least, if not over half the time and he still has to pay his ex. We are responsible for 80% of her financially and her mother has two jobs and child support from another man. The mom only gets her on Monday & Wednesday nights, and every other weekend. We have her the rest of the time. When can we get child support for our time of raising her? Or just completely stop the child support. The only reason child support is enforced so hard is because the government gets interest off it. It has almost ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with raising kids. Just $$$$$.REPORT COMMENTS

Hey this is Gabriel, I medically retired out of the Army two years ago, I was active duty for 10 years and in that time California support was taking out $600 something a month and took all my tax returns for ten years so I added that plus my civilian jobs where sometimes they would take more then half my check I was making about $600. every two weeks they left me $100. and living in San Francisco so yes I was homeless for a month. got back on my feet working under the table had no choice. Then joined the Army thinking I would pay off Cal support just a heads up I refuse to call it child support and here is why. I added almost $85,000 then two years ago while stationed at Fort Hood TX. I noticed on my mypay pay stub they did not take out any money then next pay day same thing so I figured I was done, until my family went to buy groceries for the house and found out my bank account was froze. I called cal support they told me because I was not paying them,I said the Army takes care of that so I went down to my finance office they looked into it and said it was not the Army it was cal support that stopped taking money. So I called again and keep in mind we still have no food for the weekend and this person signed to me was rude as hell making me feel like I was one of the dead beat dad's. I told her what we found out and said its on your side so after 3 hrs waiting for them to call back she said some bull about the computers must have shut down or reset or something and it must have magically clicked on my name and hit stop taking money out of check. I said whatever fix it she told me it would take 4 to 5 days YES!! I told her about my family needing food she could care less even after I told her it was there fault nothing I had to take out a Army emergency relief loan. Then my favorite part of this nightmare I asked how much I had left to pay about $1,000 I should be almost done right? that rude.... cant curse on this but you fill in blank, she laughed and said oh no more like $80,000 I yelled what! how is that even possible I paid that she said interest so its like I am back to square one. I told her about me being injured in Afghanistan and I am getting a couple surgeries on my knee how am I going to work. ready for it she said well your more then capable to work at home. so I asked her so the hell with me getting fixed up and PTSD counseling and going through divorcee just as long as you get your money. it gets better I then asked how much of that $80,000 did my two kids get? she said nothing I didn't know what to say to that but after a couple minutes I told her that does not sound right it went all in there pockets and if I was to countinue to pay the same thing will happen so I refused to pay and before I could take my money out of the bank she froze it again so I had to call her again telling her that was my rent and food money because I will not be getting a retirement check and a VA check for up to four months and all that was in my aREPORT COMMENTS

If it costs $250,000 on average to raise a child from birth to 18, no one should be ordered to pay more than half $125,000. That would be no more than $579/mo for one child. And child support should never have anything to do with being a licensed driver, jail time, tax returns, credit report, interest, or having a passport.REPORT COMMENTS

To someone in Saint Albans, WV. Lets look at what you say a little more clearly. You are saying that you do agree with the fact that fathers shouldn't have to pay child support in such large quantities unless she and her new hubby decide that she can be a stay at home mother?! Thats what I am getting from what you wrote. Even in that case, to make it fair, the mothers earning potential should be evaluated at that point and then, based off of how much of the combined total income, you should get what you would net per week, minus your share. For a better example and I will try to keep it easy. Lets say you are determined to make $300 per week. Now, lets tax it because child support should be taxed. You take home $200 a week and your ex brings home a little more. The combined income is now showing that based off of your income, you are 30% of the total combined incomes. To be fair, you chose to quit working, so your ex should be required to pay no more than 70% of your net pay of potential income making your max amount $140 a week and that number depends on a new number that should now be factored in which is time spent with dad. that $140 should be based on the child living with you 7 days a week and for each day dad gets the child the amount of child support reduces incrementally. so, keeping it easy, if you and your ex have split custody 50/50, you are now due to receive $70 per week. Or, he gets the child 2 days through the week, you are reduced to $100.REPORT COMMENTS

This position is to make mothers that receive child support be made to work in order to receive any payment. Will I think that's bull in some cases.... A father wants to reduce amount of payment monthly so he can provide for his new family because his new family shouldn't suffer for his past relationship/s....I get it BUT if the mother has children with let's say a new husband and they agree that she stays home as a homemaker and take care of the kids while he (new husband) provides for his family then she should have that right to do so. No a father shouldn't support a mother that is single and 100% able to work even 20 hours a week to have that income from her side as well but if the mother has a new family as well as he then forcing her to get a job is irrelevant. Is his new wife ordered to work to help provide for children that aren't hers....NOPE but the mother with a new husband that wants to provide for a child that isn't his should be forced to work?!?!?! That's bs! No a father shouldn't have to pay a mother $1,000+ a month in child support while the mother is single and wants to live off the system. But a mother that's moved on and in a new marriage with new children shouldn't be made to work if the new husband agrees to provide and her be a stay at home mother to the children they have together. In that situation the father shouldn't have to pay $1,000+ but around $200-$300 should be enough to help support a child monthly when she has income coming in from a new spouse. Children don't need name brand clothes or have an Xbox to live. That few $100 can help pay a bill or put gas in a car to take the child to school or doctor or for instance for the car, etc. Not every situation is the same hints why we have family court so a judge should be the one to choose for that child's benefit.REPORT COMMENTS

Recently gone through divorce. Have 5 yr old son. Was married for 5 yrs. Child support ordered was a few thousands a month and it's about to go up when the alimony payout stops. I'm not financially as unfortunate as some the other posters here( still have to work to pay the amount ) and I'm willing to pay. However, there is no one or no law that makes sure the money go to the care of the child. With that much money given for a 5 yr old, there's nothing in the system that checks how the money is spent? My ex's argument to get more moeny was that she wanted to save for child's college. Really? IN NY state, I'm supposed to pay child support till my son is 21. How do I believe that? The court and lawyers look at you funny if you ask such questions. The system has tamed us men in certain way that we are not supposed to question it. What the hell is the reasoning for 'recalculating child support once alimony payout is stopped' when they say in their own words in NY state website what the purpose of child support is? Why recalculate it? And if we do question this, we are supposed to be looked at as someone who do not want to take care of the kids. Is that calculated move from lawyers and judges to avoid burdens of the society having to pitch in? Or is this just pure propaganda? Something has to change in family court system. either come up with better guidelines or fire all the judges who are conformed to a certain way and trying to conform us in a certain way.REPORT COMMENTS

Child support has become a multi million dollar business. They're making money off enslaving men by charging them arrears even when they have lost their job, and when you do have a job the mother can basically get anything she can wants with bogus proof. The system wants the women to get more money as they can hold that money in a bank account an accrue interest. That's free money. Legally enslaving fathers. This is beyond disqusting. Good fathers lives are being destroyed along with any relationship they could have with their children is gone, brainwashing the children over money.REPORT COMMENTS
