Why are we as teachers and state workers being penalized after we have paid in the proper amounts of social society for the past 27 years? WE already receive very low state pension and have to pay over 55% of our health insurance in the state of Maine. Please pass these two bills this year. Cheers, Harry from Maine.

This is an extremely unfair bill that penalizes those who have paid in to Social Security for many years but don't get the full benefit upon retirement.

This bill will end the unfair practice of penalizing divorcees. As a reader Thea said below on another website: "I am a divorce financial analyst. Although WEP and GPO are bad, the treatment for the same affected workers is even worse in divorce. That's because social security is considered separate property while government pensions are considered marital property. So, if you are a teacher who didn't pay into SS, 50% of the marital value or monthly benefits of your teacher's pension will go to your ex-spouse. And, the ex-spouse will also get 100% of his/her SS benefits. But, the GPO will reduce the 50% of your ex-spouse's claim for benefits to $0. I have clients who have lost well over $100,000 in divorce settlements because of this. I am working with a divorce attorney to get legislators to see the awful inequity. The offset provisions need to be repealed and social security needs to be a marital asset. The military pensions became a marital asset in 1982 and it's time to change SS as well. If you know of anyone in that situation, they need to stay out of court and be forewarned."

My federal job (FAA/Flight Service)was outsourced in 07' and I,unlike many of my collegues, was able to qualify for a dsr. It is not right to reduce my social security benefit. In this ecconomy I am hanging on by my fingernails. I am not asking for a handout. Just what I am entitled to.

I have 32 years federal service. Why am I penalized with a reduction of my social security benefit? They take the money from your check, but don't want to pay up when the time comes. Please reverse this ruling.

Please do not take our Social Security.we worked hard for it and deserve and need it. I am a 75 year old grandmother with two high school grandsons who need my financial support to go to college. Mother is facing foreclosure because she got tied up with a predatory lender. Therefore , they need my help to survive.I was depending on my social security to help us survive.

Please do not penalize us. Many of us have served as law enforcement officers all our adult lives and are unable to live on our pensions. Please do not unfairly take our social security as well.
