WEP/GPO discriminates against public workers and discourages people from working in public sector careers. It should be repealed! -

The GPO and WEP provisions need to be repealed. They are unfair to public workers that are due payments from social security. In my case, my husband worked and paid into the SS system until he died. Normally, I would be entitled to widows benefits. Also, I worked private sector for 21 years before becoming a teacher. I worked at mostly minimum waged jobs but I still paid into the system. My benefits from either situation are eliminated because of the years I spent as a teacher. I consider teaching an essential public service with acknowledged low pay (for a college graduate). I could have chosen a higher paying profession and paid into another annuity and not been penalized my benefits. This is unfair to the hard-working public service workers that spend their lives working at essential jobs for lower wages. This is unfair to the widows that DID work to help provide for their families instead of staying home (and perhaps accepting government aid). REPEAL GPO AND WEP NOW!!!!!!REPORT COMMENTS

There are people that never worked getting more from Social Security than I did. I worked multiple jobs for years, raised two children and now getting less social security than wives who never worked.REPORT COMMENTS

It physically makes me ill to think that after working at educating our country's youth for twenty-five years in both public and non-public settings, I am penalized for having taught at public schools in the USA and earning a minimal pension. I deserve the benefits and money Social Security took from me all those years as well. The WEP and GPO penalities will be devastating to me and my spouse as we enter our retirement years. I ask that Congress repeal the unfair WEP/GPO and protect earned and paid for benefits.REPORT COMMENTS

This Repeal should be pulled to the front of the table and repaired now. In front of the Presidential Campaign. Because not one candidate will commit to it. The United States of America is not supposed to rob its citizens. When you pay into Social Security, (by law), you should receive your Social Security that is entitled to you. It?s as simple as that.REPORT COMMENTS

These bill to repeal the WEP & GPO have been introduced year after year and never get out of committee. Congress people just introduce these bills to show they?re sympathetic but that?s always the end of it. No vote in the House. No vote in the Senate. They just sit there and go nowhere. We?re being conned.REPORT COMMENTS

It's the right thing to do, it makes no sense to penalize teachers, of all people. I thought we are guaranteed equal protection under the law.REPORT COMMENTS

An analogy: What if I'd earned pensions from two companies, and one of the two decided that, since I'd earned a second pension, it would reduce the benefit I had earned through it's retirement system?REPORT COMMENTS

ALL people who pay into SS should receive it, as well as the SS benefits of their spouse! Why, am I not permitted to receive the SS credits that I paid in? Why am I not allowed to receive my husband's SS, if he is deceased before me? Why would anyone want to work in education because of this policy? How is Texas supposed to employ quality educators? Should they only marry other educators?REPORT COMMENTS

I worked on the public sector got 18 years and taught school for 25 years. I still work part time and forced to pay social security. As a retired teacher, I won't be able to draw a decent portion of my SS benefits before age 70. As a widow, I will be on a single income because my husband's SS benefits will stop. Teacher retirement is based on a percentage of the 3 highest salaries years, but there are no pay increases after the 20th year of service. There is nothing fair about this. Why don't you limit SS benefits on the wealthy a 32nd retired Congress and Senators.REPORT COMMENTS

I paid in enough to achieve a certain level of return on my investment only to find out I will have to sacrifice a portion of my returns because of the occupation I chose after retiring from the military. I probably have peers who retired from the military and will not lose any of their returns because they chose a different profession....sound unfair? Repeal this unfair law or just return MY money commensurate with the reduced returns because of the law. You notice I call this return on investment not a benefit !REPORT COMMENTS

Widows should also be protected from GPO. IT IS AGE DISCRIMINATION NOT TO HAVE INCLUDED IT SINCE THE MAJORITY OF WIDOWS HAVE LOW INCOMES, ARE ELDERLY AND HAVE HIGHER MEDICAL COSTS THAN WEP RECIPIENTS. A CLASS ACTION SUIT SHOULD DEFINITELY BE ENTERED TO PROTECT THE ELDERLY.REPORT COMMENTS

I am retired and the money I have diligently paid into Social Security is being denied me. I have been divorced for over ten years & am my sole support. Because I am denied my full benefits I have very limited funds to make ends meet. I am not allowed my ex husband's benefits either. This is totally unfair & no different than someone paying into an individual retirement fund. You have been elected to serve as a representative of the people and you need to step up to the plate for all public employees who are being denied their money. REPEAL the WEP/GPO Penalties & Protect Earned Social Security Benefits. This needs to be addressed by you immediately. Thank you for your prompt attention to this grave matter.REPORT COMMENTS

The WEP is totally unfair and robbing benefits from those that have been earned. Because of WEP I will not receive survivor benefits from my spouse as those not affected by WEP. We earned SS like anyone else and should be entitled to the same benefits. No different than saving 401k.REPORT COMMENTS

The WEP/GPO is totally unfair and possibly illegal. This is the United States of America, or at least it used to be. Everybody is treated equally, or is supposed to be. Everyone who devoted themselves to work for the government, paid into they?re pension and also worked other private jobs and paid into Social Security should get what they are entitled to. This was also kept secret and hidden to the people involved like any other scam. How just a group of workers in a specific time period could be attacked like this is totally wrong. Working a government job used to be an honor, now it is just being a victim.REPORT COMMENTS
