I lie in South Carolina and got a second opinion about my collapsed cervical vertebrae and hallux valgus accompanied by a large bunion on the ball of my foot in which I've been cutting myself. I have RA,OA, osteoporosis, DDD in my neck, back and my wrists are fused. My knees have deteriorated because of the improper gate due to my foot problems. In any case when I voiced my discontent to my Rheumatologist after a second opinion from a Orthopedic Surgeon and his accusation of why I waited so long to receive treatment, my Rheumo released me and along with that went my pain meds. Doctor are giving me medication that are tearing up my stomach causing heart palpitations and trying to treat me for depression. Well how about what should have been done in the first place. Treat my pain and condition and taper me down to a comfortable lever of pain meds. Instead of ignoring the underlying condition that is causing the problems which only means that pain meds have to increase as the condition worsens. DUH!!!. I have taken anti-inflammatories and steroids for years. I have intestinal problem and musculoskeletal problems from them as well. I have had RA since I was 28 years old I'm now 53. It was a Rheumatologist in NY who suggested pain meds. In any case the DEA does not have the Constitutional right to dictate how Doctors should treat or medicate their patients. I've read many blogs and people are truly suicidal. Patients should not be penalized for questioning their Doctors either. Patients have the right and should question any care given them and be completely informed by their doctors about any and all aspects of care. Congress needs to revoke powers from the DEA and reinstate the Constitutional rights of the people. We ask Congress does this within a timely matter, suffering has gone on long enough for people suffering with serious conditions.REPORT COMMENTS

The DEA finds it easier to harrass doctors and pharmacies cause they have an easy paper trail. It is not right to assume everyone in pain and on oxy 30mg are junkies you say alot of them getting ir 30s are going out and trading it for heroin well keep taking it away from patients and alot of them start to do heroin to help there pain because the doctor wont. I personally know of alot of people who got on heroin for that very reason. thanks to all you big wigs fighting it the wrong way.REPORT COMMENTS

My husband and are 84 and 82 physicians are reducing the amount of pain medication this is very unfair to elderly. Along with that if you can get what you need you have to go to the physicians office every month for an appointment. This is sometimes unable to do, so therefore you just remain in pain and golf to take Tylenol as far as we concern that's not for pain its headaches maybe.REPORT COMMENTS

The nurse practitioner there put me through hell, hitting me with a UA 8 times in a row trying to catch me being non-compliant. Come to find out months later that her clinic was being investigated by the DEA for writing too many pain scripts. One of the nurses there that treated me like scum tested positive for meth! I had a boogie board accident in 1989. But, except for the pain that I had at the time of the accident, which was in my neck and back, almost unbearable, it went away. Ten years later is was in such horrible pain I fell to the floor. Dr.s kept telling me I was in pain because of depression, well, I was depressed because of the pain. After awhile of being told I was drug seeking and I was not hurting a Dr. did an MRI, my spinal cord was being bent and pinched by vertebrae. Threat of being paralyzed from the bottom of my rib cage down and in a wheelchair. Medical emergency surgery was done. Pain went away for awhile but came back four years later. I also had to have lumbar surgery to fix a collapsed spine. Pain went away for awhile. Well, it's back. After being on hydrocodone since 1999, I'm now being told I will be better off, off this med. I've developed fibromyalgia from these injuries and hurt all over, all of the time. This Dr. is taking me off this med. and I'm being told it's for my own good. No, its for his own good, afraid to get in trouble for prescribing it. I don't want to live any more. I can't clean my house, I can't do laundry, I can't go shopping, I can't enjoy my kids and grandkids anymore. He has taken me down from ten, ten mg.hydrocodone to four a day. That gives me a couple of hours to do the things I have to do, then I'm done. He is going to take me down one tablet a month till I'm off it. My God, what am I going to do. This is not living, this is just being. In pain constantly. And when I go to Dr.s I'm told I'm addicted to this med. and I'm Dr. surfing and drug seeking. When all I'm seeking is some relief from this horribleness, I just want to be able to enjoy the last years I have left. No one was worried about me on this med. for all these years, sixteen years now, now after allowing me to live a good life without hurting constantly, they want to take me off, not for my good, but to cover their butts for prescribing it for all these years. Can't live like this much longer. The heroin addicts keep getting high and I keep being taken off a med. that allows me to walk without pain. What can I do.REPORT COMMENTS

We MUST STOP THIS ABUSE!! Opiods are our LIFESAVING MEDICATION, THE DEA HAS ABSOLUTELY NO BUSINESS INTEREFERING BETWEEN A DR AND A PATIENT!! We have corrupt lawmakers making medical decisions about our healthcare and they sure as hell don't have the degree to do it. They have never examined us, they know nothing about diseases like RSD, CRPS, STENOSIS, ARTHRITIS, EHLOS DANLOS SYNDROME, ETC., the list of incurable painful diseases is endless amd yet these corrupt lawmakers feel they have a right to decide who suffers. Thank you for this article. I have severe Osteoporosis and a collapsing spine, I tried to get help at a pain clinic after my first fusion and when the rods were coming out of my spine as a complication. I was in blinding, screaming pain that no human could endure . I was turned away with 15 methadone and told to get off the morphine I was given after surgery. They said I was addicted because I took more than prescribed as it wasn't helping with pain. I tried to commit suicide after 8 months of horrific suffering and had to go through shock treatments to get back my will to live. I found a pain clinic that prescribed an opiod cocktail that works for me. They saved my life. By not helping me with my pain it was a death sentence. I still have to fight with my insurance company on my doses. It seems that who ever the powers that be know what is good for me besides my doctors. Without my medication my quality of life would suffer. The DEA is an anachronism. The War on Drugs is a failure. With marijuana legalization on the horizon the DEA is trying to create a new "boogeyman" to fight so that they can justify their existence (& funding). They really have no right to be threatening doctors. Lately I've noticed that heroin deaths are being linked to pain med overdoses to inflate the numbers & "create" a problem. Politicians can't even do their own jobs but they want to practice medicine? I say "NO". This is ridiculous. Drug use is a medical issue not a legal issue. Pain medications are NOT heroin. Elderly pain patients shouldn't have to suffer just because heroin is flooding our nation and young people are becoming addicted. This attack of the DEA is an attack on me. Get the government out of my relationship with my doctor!!! We need to get our walkers, our wheelchairs & our crutches & roll on Washington!!!REPORT COMMENTS

The DEA is threatening and bullying our doctors and telling them how to do their jobs. When did the government become our doctor too!. People in chronic pain are being discriminated against because of this. We are suffering and our doctors are being told they can not treat us properly. Because of the greed of some unethical doctors that would write medications to anyone who could pay them, those of us who need treatment are being denied that care. The people that abuse pain medications will go on to other things and have, those of us who need pain medication and take it for pain not to get high are suffering needlessly because of what others have done! The right to pain management was put in place because of the terrible things that happen when you suffer everyday and night , it steals your life and mind away and so many choose to end the suffering because they can not get the help they need. Now because of all the lies and distorted truth and the overstepping of our government and law enforcement we are being treated like we do not matter and our suffering does not exist! We are being denied treatment needlessly because we are chronic pain sufferers and treated like we are all addicts just seeking a way to get high.REPORT COMMENTS

Pain warriors, those who ask why our doctors are not standing up for us, the patients who have been with them for years, the pts they see suffering daily with debilitating incurable diseases, go to doctorsofcourage.org. Our good drs who are choosing to continue to treat their pts compassionately and with opiods are being targeted one by one by the DEA. They are attacking our drs, raiding their offices coming in baring weapons while many intractable pain pts are sitting in the waiting rooms, the DEA shuts them down immediately closing the doors, sending those waiting in the waiting rooms on their way without their medical records. The DEA Confiscates all our medical records and there's no getting them back, making it that much harder for us to be seen by anyone else, without your medical records there are very slim chances of any dr believing you, or getting the foot in the door in a pain clinic, Our drs are losing everything they worked so hard for, Many are jumping on the anti opiod bandwagon abandoning their pain pts. We are being left with two options, the streets for relief or suicide, and don't doubt for a second the DEA and government know exactly what they are doing!! Legit pain pts are being FORCED TO EXIST IN A TORTUROUS HELL!! This so called opiod epidemic is prohibition on our life saving pain medication, the corrupt dea and government stand with the drug cartel, why would they attack the cartel who are loaded with deadly weapons, when it's so much easier for the dea to attack our drs, deatroying their lives as well as millions of pain pts lives. I pray the whistleblowers come forward , surely the guilt of killing innocent law abiding chronically ill citizens has got to be getting to some of them by now. This is GENOCIDE! I am so happy to see this forum. For almost six months, every 28 days when I see my doctor, she tells me to get ready because any day now the DEA will take away her right to write RXs for narcotic pain relievers that I have been taking for over ten years. She says, no warning, no two day supply, just cut off that day and that it will probably kill me. There are no pain management offices who will take new patients where I live. My thoughts race constantly about what I can do. I get very little relief as it is and now I just want to die. Why isn't my doctor fighting for me? I have a contract and have never failed my duty. Doesn't my doctor have a duty to me when I signed that contract? I look on the internet constantly, but there are no answers. Thanks again and thanks for listening. No one understands.REPORT COMMENTS

It has been 9 years post auto-accident which occurred when I was 17. Two day following discharge I returned to the hospital with unbearable head pain which has continued since. I have continued to look for resolution and with my family's support continue to search for help. Our medical system is so broken and segmented we have been unable to find a physician who would coordinate care, continue to look for possible causes (other than the obvious damaged facial nerves), provide pain medication, or continue care for this very traumatic life changing event. I have been through all of the pain management offerings and only end up with no medical treatment and at some points, medications to help me continue to be a tax paying responsible and contributing citizen. The decisions made to monitor and drug test every day citizens who are contributing to our society without probable cause, penalizing and monitoring doctors for practicing what they are educated and licensed to do, leaving pain patients without needed medications is against our Bill of Rights. The governments failure to stop illegal drug use/sale cannot be at the well being of the citizens. Do your job with all of those tax dollars you are collecting and wasting on "Acts" that have not curbed the problems. Stop taking away our rights for your lack of ability to do your job. Stop taking away a doctors right to treat. Stop monitoring citizens without probable cause. You are impacting millions of Americans with legitimate needs. How has the Acts passed helped to curb the issues? It is not working. Give us back our rights, stop treating us as criminals, stop monitoring and do your job to figure out how to fix the problem. It is probably safe to say more Acts and Laws is not going to do it.REPORT COMMENTS

Well I thought pain doctors are suppose to help with pain and not treat you like some protocol out of a book. I do not want to try this try that as I have been down that road. I want my meds back so I can be a Mom, a wife and work 50 hours a week to survive out here. God knows you need 2 working today to make it. I have daily pain and sometimes I can not get out of bed. Then the way I was just cut off from these meds with 15 pills given to wean myself off with no required instructions of how to even do this from my doctor. This treatment is inhumane and I wish pain on all who think this is the avenue to take the drug war on opiates. These ones who abuse will get these meds regardless of how hard you try to stop it. You are just creating the need for a street seller to get pills somewhere else and sell them to all those who need them but are told we can not get them. Guarantee more deaths will result from this than what has been. Inhumane to make so many suffer and go through terrible withdrawal that can kill someone but who cares how many will actually die from withdrawal.
