The only way that I know of legally,to stop this travesty,is to tell Congress,we will not tolerate this abuse anymore.Law enforcement and politics have no place in modern healthcare practices. The medical community keeps itself in check already through pharmacy/medical boads governed by each state.Rescind the controlled substance act, defund the DEA or merge with Border Patrol to fight the real criminals.Nov 24th, 2016Darlene L. from Buffalo, NY writes:
In 1998 I had a head on collision with a drunk driver that left me with a back injury and nerve damage to my right leg and a concussion leaving me with a seizure disorder. I have been treated by a pain management dr in SC without any problems. I moved to Buffalo NY and have had nothing but problems with getting treated properly for my pain. The DEA decided to target my pain Dr. because he has the largest clinic in the state. The problem is now the DEA has permission from the court to go through every prescription written and the person who wrote it. I thought we had hippa laws protecting us from unqualified individuals looking at patient records. My problem is that since DEA has gotten involved my medication has been changed and lowered seven times in the past four and half times causing me to go through withdrawals several times and causing me to have what is referred to as break through seizures. A breakthrough seizure is a seizure that happens when things like lack of sleep pain or withdrawals from medications causes the medicationfor your seizures not to work as well as it did. So what I'm trying to say is that the DEA is making medical decisions for people who need their pain medication to have a less painful life, a life where not every thought is about how much they hurt and can they tolerate this for the rest of their lives. For me personally I don't know how much longer I can live with the pain and being treated like I. I'm a drug addict and for all the Dr's out there who pigeon whole their patients what happened to your oath (First do no harm)REPORT COMMENTS

I have had it being harassed by my doctor because the DEA keeps harassing him and his nurses and partners. I live in Connecticut I have been taking methadone for ten years with no problems it stops my pain enough so I can function and work. My doctor has been telling me how the DEA doesn't want him prescribing narcotics to patients so he keeps trying to put an electronic stimulator implant in me. I have metal in my shoulder and both legs have gone through fifteen surgeries and don't want anything implanted in my body. People have been paralized from these stimulators when the leads are implanted into their spines. So after fifteen years that the medication has helped me and my pain my doctor doesn't want me taking it any longer. In the first place the DEA has no right to go into my medical records the way they do they are breaking the HIPPA Laws. If I am taken off my medications I will sue my doctor and the DEA someone has to stop this harassment of people by the government by uneducated DEA Agents that should be harassing drug dealers NOT DOCTORS.REPORT COMMENTS

I did the right thing and still am being punished for being ill and in chronic pain . So many people in the same situation ,when will the suffering end ?REPORT COMMENTS

I also have documented chronic pain issues and was treated with high doses of narcotics. One day Dr. Kosek, Eugene Or says all I need is Peppermint Oil up my nose after treating me for years with epidural injections and trigger point infections. He stopped medication and I almost died. Luckily the ER doc put me on steroids 80mg. to start and it helped get through the pain and withdrawal, however, I am in pain daily and can barely walk. Spent the day in the ER and they gave me a tiny shot of medicine. The doctors up here were not even able to diagnose my fractured back nor are they treating my ruptured disks and more. What is wrong with the doctors? Not one doctor up here has ever heard of Dercum's Disease either .My plastic surgeon said he went to Harvard. It was after he screwed up that I learned Dr. Movassaghi went to Harvard Dental School. Apparently why learn about chronic pain problems because they are not allowed to treat them. Why get the correct degree? Maybe the DEA should check out the licensing of these doctors. It must be very embarrassing to be a pain doctor in these times. How can they stop treating the same patients they have treated for nearly ten years like my doctor? My new doctor Morris will only prescribe Suboxone "off label" because he has special training to do so. Yea, I was told about the incentives from the drug companies and how they want all doctors prescribing this crap. Don't let your doctor start you on this. There have been thousands of deaths from this drug. It is NOT the answer for chronic pain patients. It is not safe to take long term and should only be prescribed for addiction problems on a short term basis. It also makes no sense to prescribe this expensive drug with there are less expensive options that have been tried and true for decades.REPORT COMMENTS

People need to be accountable for their own actions - not have what they choose to do legislated or controlled by the DEA controlling doctors. It is an abuse of power and no one has the right to determine whether a patient's pain needs to be treated. Certainly not a division of the government. If people are dying from drug overdoses, they and they alone are responsible for what they put in their mouth. By preventing patients in pain access to medicine to alleviate their pain by scaring doctors enough so they won't prescribe meds for legitimate use, the government and DEA are creating a huge population of illegitimate drug uses who provide tax-free income to drug dealers. And THIS is the best they can do? How absurd and embarrassing. It's easy enough to have a central database to determine if patients are doctor shoppers and/or receiving multiple prescriptions from numerous sources. That should be control enough. Doctors need to have the autonomy and safety to write the prescriptions they believe best serves their patients without worrying about FBI raids, ridiculous fines, or causing harm to patients by refusing to help them manage pain. The government needs to remove themselves from the middle of the Doctor patient relationship and use their time more wisely by targeting criminals.REPORT COMMENTS

Yes, some people/patients might abuse pain medications, but it is not up to a DEA agent to determine a doctors treatment. Those who need these medications (as determined by their medical provider) should not be punished for the choices of others. The DMV isn't told to limit the drivers licenses they hand out based upon the actions of drunk and/or reckless drivers. While I understand some might believe there is a problem with opioid medications, it's up to a patient and the doctor to determine the proper treatment for pain management.REPORT COMMENTS

No, CancelNov 21st, 2016Robert D. from New Milford, CT writes:
I am a 61 year old accomplished, internationally known artist. My work is in the homes of many celebrities and major art collections. Since the age of seventeen, I have not had one day without significant pain. I have Scoliosis. I have a a 40 degree lumbar curve and a 20 degree thorasic curve. In other words my spine is shaped like the letter S. Many of my discs are gone and alot of nerves are being crushed. I have had four spine surgeries including a SI fusion. I have severe arthritis, stenosis, akylising spondylosis. Additionally, something that is causing me the most pain is severe muscle pain and wasting. My father was diagnosed with a form of muscular dystrophy which came on in his thirties. In my thirties the muscle pain started and has gotten increasingly worse over the years. A Rheumatologist told me it could be LGMD...Limb Girdle Muscular Dystrophy. As the doctor was not a muscle doctor I was referred to a Neuro Muscular DR to diagnose with DNA testing. After a ruptured appendix surgery I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia. (not sure of that) I know that sounds like a lot but that was what In was told. As I get older the pain has gotten so much worse. My pain doctor had me on a significant amount of Oxycodone/Oxycontin. I have an extremely high tolerance for these meds. A year ago, due to his gut wrenching fear of the DEA, he cut my meds in half. It was done so quickly that I went into precipitated withdrawal and wound up in the Emergency room with a siezure. I am seeing him next week for a cortisone injection and I am terrified he will discharge me. He wants to rid himself of all opioid patients (it seems to me). I have been with my pain doctor for 8 years...I consider him a friend. He talked me out of a top to bottom spinal fusion which is a very dangerous surgery for someone my age. If my medication is cut any further my career is over. As it is now I am barely able to paint. I can stand for not more than ten minutes. I can't even hold a cell phone to my ear without my arm muscles burning. When I was on the higher dose of Oxy combo, I had a full life. I was able to almost feel like a normal person. It has no side effects. It actually has two beneficial side effects. Before going on Oxy combo I had extreme IBS bordering on Colitis. The Oxy combo cured that. It also allowed me to have a better sleep pattern. I used to go for days without sleep due to pain. I no longer need sleeping pills. I have tried every form of pain relief known to medicine and to holistic medicine. I have tried accupuncture, cupping, traction, I actually had the equivalent of 200 bee stings, bee venom shot into my spine. I have tried every medication. The only thing that has ever worked is Cortisone, Naprosin (I had to stop recently due to stomach bleeding) and Oxy combination. The CDC and DEA are throwing a wide net to try to reign in drug abusers...I get that. But in the meantime they are destroying lives. The only analogy I can think of is as follows: There are people walking around beating people with white sticks. The authorities decide to find those people and take away their white sticks and prosecute. At the same time, just in case, they take away the white sticks from blind people... I am in a very desperate situation. I have started writing letters lo loved ones just in case I find myself with no pain relief. I am not afraid of dying. I am afraid of living with intolerable gut wrenching pain as i get older. I contacted my congresswoman and she has promised to help. I don't know why the DEA can't issue waivers for people with extreme, diagnosed chronic pain. That seems like an easy solution to me. Unless someone has lived with chronic pain they have no understanding how it changes you. I have become an angry irritated person and have lost many good friends. If I had a choice I certainly would love to go through life without any medication. Brilliant scientists have created this amazing substance that reduces pain...but, because people like Philip Seymour Hoffman and Heath Legder took these meds illegally, then drank liquor, then went to bed and died, I am forced to live in abject horrible misery. It took me a year to decide to go on opioid therapy. I finally got the help I was looking for for years. I completely quit drinking (Boy, I miss a good martini). I followed all of the rules my pain doctor laid out...I even had to sign a contract. I've been on opioid therapy for 15 years without a single problem. I have never broken the rules. I hope that there is something someone can do...As quickly as possible. Thank you for listening to my story.REPORT COMMENTS

No, CancelNov 20th, 2016Someone from Seattle, WA writes:
I am angry, the pain is off the scale. I have been treated for my debilitating chronic pain for 13 of the last 20 years...that is how long it took to get treatment. My neck was fractured as a child, and I was never taken to the doctor. Then, as an adult I re-injured it at work. I was seeing chiropractors who discovered the cause of my pain through x-rays. Then an MRI revealed the details. Another injury- 8 1/2 months pregnant with my daughter, I slipped on a dirt hill while hanging onto a branch for stability in my horses' pasture. The branch snapped, and I landed on my behind, which also snapped my tailbone nearly off, and compressed the vertebrae in my lower back. My baby had dropped which splinted my tailbone, but the fall had caused a leak, so they had to induce labor a week later. I bravely had her with NO drugs. But I suffered every time I got out of a chair for a year, and then carrying my growing child around with compressed vertebrae and bulging discs over the years turned into chronic pain as bone spurs grew and sciatica developed. The neck pain causes bilateral nerve pain all the way from the vertebral nerves, down the radial nerves of both arms, My hands go numb and have pain simultaneously. At the same time I have severe pain in my neck, shoulders and upper back. To put my hands in cold water causes a reaction of unbearable pain, similar to smashing your thumb with a hammer. The stress and tension of the pain causes more pain. It is inescapable. Now the sciatica and trapped nerves in my back have made my feet go partially numb. A large pain clinic with several offices in and around Seattle was arbitrarily shut down by the DEA this August on "suspicion" of overprescibing to some patients. Eight thousand chronic pain patients were kicked to the curb, into a system that could not absorb that many new patients. This number did not include the shorter term patients who were injured, or had surgery requiring pain treatment. That brought the total number of untreated patients to about 25,000 people. So, some 60 phone calls later, no one takes my lowly Medicaid insurance, and my insurance company, my new primary doctor (I was forced to leave my doctor of 14 years because they had no answers for me) have all given me referrals that were dead ends- and they KNEW it! If I had cash for an office visit and prescription, then, maybe- but I don't. If I were a family pet, I would have been humanely destroyed long ago. We have compassion for our pets and don't want them to suffer. But what has society become to let this happen to good, honest people who were able to contribute to said society when their pain was under control? We pain patients are being abused in the cruelest way, and are light years away from the problem of opiate drug addiction on the street. So how will ruining our lives save a single one on the street? I am days away from certain disaster and there is no safety net to catch me. Pain causes high blood pressure. If I die of a stroke, it will just be one more overlooked cause of death that won't go on the rosters of doctor caused demise.REPORT COMMENTS

I've never had a reaction to anything that I've taken and regulate my meds by setting an alarm on my phone for every 4 hours tho keep me from over taking my meds. I've been studying everything I can get my hands on to see if any combination will work for the pain I'm in 24/7. This is not a life I want to keep living. Sad part is that there are no surgical procedures available for my condition that was an enormous kick in the nether regions. Have any of you on this site have any info or point me in the direction so I can see if they may interfere with the other meds I'm on. Email me if you have info I can share with my doctor on Tuesday. Thank you and hope all will find help soon.REPORT COMMENTS

I've been lied to and treated with no respect. I'm so mad at kaiser I'm so stressed out. I have fibro sciatic torn tendons in my arm and nerve pain in my feet. They just want me to suffer and I'm sick of them on Jan 1st I will get new insurance and hopefully find a doctor to help me but it a complete shame I have to wait until then.REPORT COMMENTS

I was being treated for Chronic Pain. All three sections of my spine are a mess. Several herniated disk, kylphoplasty, and a oteophyte complex. Tarsel Tunnel; Sydrome in both feet. This stuff is al chronic and painful/. It also almost all non treatable. I'm so tired of being treated like a criminal! Three months ago my Drs, office was closed by the DEA. I have been left with no pain meds, and no medical records. With all of my pain issues I have had to run around to hospitals and collect my medical Records to be evaluated by new Drs. My Quality of life sucks. My Grandchildren and my aging parents need me. I have never once been to the ER for pain. I have never sold, traided. snortred, or ran short of my meds. I followed all the rules and was able to have some quality of life. At 53, I cant wrap my mind around how I am to even begin to have a decent life. The DEA has gone overboard once again. Not EVERYONE who needs pain meds is an addict!REPORT COMMENTS

I have suffering with chronic pain over half my life ( I just turned 60). It started with an automobile accident that altered the position of my cervical spine. In 2006 I finally had surgery a titanium brace and 8 screws, the surgery did nothing to control pain. In 2008 I had lumbar surgery in 2015 I had hip replacement surgery. You would think this history and the fact that I have never abused my medication or doctor shopped, would maybe cut me a little slack. But no, I am still treated like a drug abuser. This war on chronic pain patients is callous and cruel. It make me wonder if the demeaning treatment and the sheer stress of trying to manage their miserable circumstances that many of the overdoses are not suicides, that it has become just too much to continue to live with.REPORT COMMENTS

I suffer from severe Siri Attic arthritis. I've had it since I was 16 years old. It is the worst type of any arthritis. It's crippling and debilitating. I had to stop playing hockey in high school because it was so painful in my feet. Finally when I was 26 dr. Figured out what I had. I had been suffering from juvenile arthritis for many years and no one noticed I was misdiagnosed and told it was bone spurs. Once they figured out what it was and believe how much pain I was actually in. I was prescribed five morphine per day a fentanyl patch and 150 Vicodins per month obviously I got addicted extremely quickly. One day the doctor forgot to sign the bottom of a prescription. CVS told me to bring it back and get a signature. So I did. When I went back my doctor it was no longer there so they sent me to his supervisor will be going to yell at me for being on too much medication. I agree I was on too much way too much. But I was walking no more pain and I could go outside and actually have somewhat of a life. I also suffer from severe anxiety and antisocial disorder very hard for me to go outside without having a panic attack so they gave me 3 coladapin per day. When I see my doctor again after he got in trouble for over-prescribing me he dropped me because he got in trouble from his supervisor. I had to go and find a new pain clinic which was extremely hard and long. So now I have been on a lot of parents for over 15 years and I am a marijuana smoker. I have weaned myself down to 3 morphine per day opposed to 5. I decided to take myself off of the Soma and flexeril that they were prescribing me because it made me so tired in the day. I walk into the doctor's office 2 months. And my new pain clinic once again for the 3rd time in 2 years told me I have been on the same dose of morphine for so long now that it must not be working and I need to move up. I know what a shady world and practice these doctors are in so I trust none of them. I reasonably told her no I did not want to move up my medication because I do not want to be addicted to any more than I already am. After being asked 3 times and told them each time I'm okay being on 3. The following appointment she decided to lower me to 2 period within a spend of one month she decided to tell me I need to be on 2 instead of 3. I outright asked her last month you told me I need it 4, but now this weak you are lowering me to two pills per day. I straight-out asked her how that can change in such a short span. You want to up my dose and when I refuse to lower my dose. That makes absolutely no sense. She replied with there are other pain clinics if you do not like our rules. And still never gave me an explanation on how I was lowered within 1 to 2 months after being offered more and refusing to take it. I made the mistake and complained. Now I have a group of doctors coming down on me because they speak to each other behind the scenes. Now after a total of 15 years of being on all of this medication together I was told just this week I have to choose between my coladapin or smoking marijuana. Which I feel is completely unfair. And most likely illegal because I have a doctor's letter from the state and also pay $250 a year to the state to be allowed to smoke marijuana. I currently give drug test every month and have no problem with doing so. So as today stands I am very frantic because I was just taken off of my coladapin after 15 years. All because I asked her proactive question about my own life now I am being completely persecuted by the whole doctor industry period being told to go somewhere else when they know there is nowhere else to go because too many junkies have overdosed. I understand the fact that plenty of people have died and it is not right. But the power of 1000 grieving mothers with the loss of their children standing at the front of the golden dome. I guess it was just enough for the state too start to pretend that they care about cutting off people. It's too late too many people have died. No disrespect to anybody that has passed away on it because it was probably not their own fault the doctor probably let them down that road in my opinion. I do not know what to do I am very scared. I feel like there's nobody out there to help me because there is no one out there to help me. Unless I die nobody's going to listen to my family or me. The only time the state pays attention is when somebody passes away. I don't want to pass away to be heard. I just want to walk and have my normal life back again. If anybody has any information of a help service that fights for people in pain right. I know I may sound crazy but I just don't know what to do I am scared I have never felt so alone in my life. Just like everybody else has wrote and all these posts. We are looked at as drug Seekers. And nobody cares unless you have a grieving mother on the State House steps. I think this should be ten thousand people in pain on the State House steps Maybe they would notice that. Thank you for reading this if you did. If you're in the same situation I wish you the best of luck because I know that there is probably no luck for us we are in for the fight of our lives right now. I wish everybody the best. The funniest part of this story is he decided to tell me I was no longer allowed to smoke medication the day that it was deemed illegal in Massachusetts. My doctor has a serious biased against marijuana he told me if it was up to him it would not be legal. Guess what it's not up to you the people have spoken. I should not have to choose between two things have been on for over 15 years. And I can't even smoke that much because the dispensaries are so expensive and far away. Sorry for rambling I just feel so lost and hopelessREPORT COMMENTS

And the second one told me point blank my ins WILL NOT pay for the necessary surgery on my neck and back because I SMOKE! And, secondly, his atty has only given his group permission to prescribe the synthetic drug tramadol. APPALLED i told him let me get this straight: you discovered and diagnosed my medical issues and cannot help me by surgery and pain relief because the ins co and your atty dictates my therpeutic medicines and procedures to assist me in having any quality of life such as just GETTING OUT OF BED!? If thats true why am I making appts w a dr.? Just give me the addresses of the ins and atty and I will let them treat me! OH and even after that delivery of information he gave me a list of further tests to get! WTf Why!? Oh yeah because there is money in that...no reason not to get some money off my sad situation even though the dr. Cant or wont treat it further anyway! Guaranteed if I had private insurance, smoker or not, Ild not only get the surgery but real pain relief via meds. For the record, I have NEVER been addicted or abused anything other than of course cigs....which of course had I k own 40 yrs ago Ild struggle with getting off of them I would have NEVER buckled under pier pressure! I understand how the abuse of these drugs are rampant but someone, ANYONE please explain to me and many others why WE, legitimate patients are having to pay for their sins!? This type of medical care is nothing short of discriminatory and unacceptable medical care! What will it take for drs, lawyers, pharmaceutical Co and step up and treat each patients on a case by case basis; we JUST CANNOT prove a negative....that being we ARE NOT DRUG SEEKERS OR ADDICTS! This is a very dangerous, slippery slope a d trust and believe, lives will be lost! I am nearly bed ridden because most days are just too painful to even pick up a cup of coffee let alone function; to say suicide hasnt crossed my mind would be a lie but at this point I have absolutely NO QUALITY OF LIFE! Wake up and stop looking out for your own asses from litigation and stand by your oath! If if we up to many of us, we would file a class action suit for lack of medical treatment due to discrimination! In closing, I just want to point out that I am def NOT alone in this! Go on line and just read the hundreds of patients in situations just like myself....what is wrong with this symptom? We need help asap! Sadly, between the stank eye we get just mentioning the level of pain cause of COURSE WE WANT DRUGS to the complete disregard and lack of treatment we seem to encounter, there is a huge community of legitimate suffering ppl who have given up and resigned themselves to a life in bed and watching the world go by!REPORT COMMENTS
