As a chronic pain person I can tell you that deaths by meds happens when our pain is not taken care of with the proper meds. We overmedicate trying to get out of pain and if we can't we over dose to get out of pain once and for all.REPORT COMMENTS

When I moved to Florida from NY 2 years ago after being in pain management for 4 years, the first visit I had with the new pain Dr, he cut my medications in half. I suffer every day because of this...2 years later...I learned to deal with it...a few months ago I had my gallbladder removed and for weeks after that I was in severe pain in my chest. The emergency room Dr sent me away, the surgeon that did the gallbladder surgery sent me away, my family doctor sent me away, thankfully 3 weeks later I was able to see my pain management Dr. who ordered a chest xray , and discovered that my ribs were fractured from my gallbladder removal. For 3 weeks I suffered with NO help only because I am in pain management and the surgeon and family Dr and emergency room all thought I was looking for pain medicine!!! By this time I ended up having a nervous breakdown from the horrible way I was treated and my psychiatrist diagnosed me with PTSD!!! I already suffer from Depression, anxiety and panic disorder. I have been disabled due to DDD, spinal stenosis, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, failed back surgery syndrome and numerous other spinal problems. THE STATE OF FLORIDA IS HORRIBLE!!!!!!REPORT COMMENTS

DEA needs to get out of the Dr. business. Let the Dr. make the decisions, they know the patient! The DEA sure does not!REPORT COMMENTS

This should apply to pharmacists, also, who now are beginning to question a patient and get HIPAA protected medical information before filling pain scrips.REPORT COMMENTS

There should be a plan of care for treating chronic pain patients just as there is for any type of illness or disease process. If a Dr refuses to treat or address pain they should be held accountable for neglect and malpractice. Pain is a real symptom of something wrong. When it is ignored it sets the patient up to do whatever they have to do to seek relief. It is also a double standard when I have heard myself of MD's having pain and going straight for the big guns and NEVER being questioned. When statistics show medical personnel are some of the highest abusers of prescriptions narcotics. Yes there are people who abuse drugs and have issues but they are humans too and deserve to be treated as humans and not less than that. I see a pain management Dr and have for over 6 years and even now when I am admitted with my serious health issues they refuse to call and bring my Dr in on my case. WHY? When he knows me and my issues better than anyone. It is like they don't want to help you or admit you could have real issues and I have come to the same hospital, used the same Dr's, and used the same pharmacy. I am not hiding anything nor any of my admissions and the trouble I have had. I have real medical problems and they still act as if they are offended that I need pain control. The DEA and the FDA may be on the Dr's backs but alot of what goes on becomes personal and they decide to play God with pts' lives. It is very sad because the entire time I have been sick and been all over the country trying to find out a diagnosis the Dr's were unable to think for themselves if the CT or bloodwork didn't tell them what was wrong it was all in my head. Thank goodness for a real Dr who specialized in research and knew the signs and symptoms of the disease I have and the pain that goes with it. Thankful for a Board Certified Anesthesiologist and Board certified pain management Dr who understands the treatment of pain and the medications used to treat it. Just as every disease or injury is different from patient to patient so is the level of pain they are able to tolerate. Before a Dr is allowed to practice medicine he/she should have a painful procedure done without pain meds so they understand what pain is and how it effects each individual and then they will quit judging how I or someone else feels and interprets pain. By not treating a pt's pain you are seriously neglecting that patient and to me that is a serious violation of your hippocratic oath.REPORT COMMENTS

As an elderly patient, with neuropathy, radiculopathy, degenerative disks, spinal stenosis, recurrent ruptured disks, and diabetes, I suffer everyday of my life. As Pain management can not, at the present time, prescribe the medications needed to give me a normal life, I, quite often, do think that suicide is the only way out. My family and God is the only reason I do not. I am not a drug addict, I take my medications faithful and correctly. They just aren't strong enough to help. I pray that the current administration will finally understand that there are many innocent people, who are force to exist like this. I, also, pray that they will never have to suffer the way we do.REPORT COMMENTS

This is where I am at with my PCP. I get that he is trying to protect his medical license. Nobody wants to stand out in any facet. This however does not treat me as a whole patient with a myriad of medical issues, many of which are the draw of the gene pool. The medications that have been prescribed, I have been on for decades with little or no dosage changes. Yet when it comes time that I need a refill because the refill days of times 2 or 3 are gone. So every month it is a struggle to connect the doctor to the pharmacy. Staff members who take my call for a request, one can hear the audible sigh and feel the agitation through the phone. My guess is that these same employees get the same reaction from the prescribing doctor. It's a classic case of boss yells at the worker, worker goes home and yells at the spouse, the spouse yells at the kid and the kid kicks the dog. Patients have become the dog. We are at their mercy, hoping for 2 days without the medication and symptoms of not having the med start to show up. It is disruptive of my life and the panic that the Rx may not be filled even though as previously stated, the dosage and how many times a day have not changed in years. No, I don't feel that this classifies me the symptomatic patient as a drug addict and furthermore should my PCP feel afraid to prescribe.REPORT COMMENTS

I will never understand how taking away pain medication from those who suffer from chronic pain will stop drug abuse. It won't. Plain and simple. But doctors, pharmacists, and, oh yeah, pain patients are putting up with this giant exercise in futility just to prove that the whole thing the DEA is making us endure is ludicrous. Please stop the madness. Treat chronic pain patients humanely.REPORT COMMENTS
