Things MUST CHANGE! I am chronic pain sufferer and was just recently denied pain relief at the ER after burning myself with a 400 degree cast iron skillet. First and second degree burns covered my entire left palm and all five fingers. The pain was unbearable!! The doctor told me to just keep taking the meds I'm already on. My meds that I take for daily chronic pain maintenance. He said he d offer me Motrin. That he was not going to prescribe me or give me anything because I "already had some". A daily medication used to enable normal functioning is not going to do anything for such an injury! I was forced to suffer with not only extreme burn pain, but with the feelings of being judged and discriminated against. Had I been a person that was not on a long term pain management plan, there's NO QUESTION I would have been given the necessary medications and treatments to relieve my pain and suffering.Jul 23rd, 2013Someone from Madison, WI signed.

I'm a single mom of four kids, guardian of my niece who I raised and living with me, responsible for my old mom and put my brother in college. I run my own business, have a full time job and manage two mortgages. I am a very active and productive person, everyday is hectic from 6am till midnight. Recently I fractured two bones and injured both my legs from walking too fast. I had surgery and had disc and screws placed in my bones. The doctor found out that I was vitamin D defficiency and artiritis. After surgery, with both leg in cast I ask my doctor to released me from the hospital because no one at home to help my mom with the kids and daily house chores. I was given morphine and of course hydrocodone 10/325 1-2 pill every 4-6 hrs. This medicine works well for me and I was able to pull myself around using my arms at first to manage my works, cook, and take care of my children. I keep taking 2 pills every 4 hrs to keep myself productive. Until I had my cast removed I decided I didnt need to refill my med. I stop completely only to find out I was already dependant on it. I was going through very bad withdrawal but I thought I was having the flu. I took flu medicine but my symptom gotten worse. I called my doctor and found out that I cannot stop taking hydrocodone suddenly. At that time I realized I was script a drug like cocaine. So now the doctor script me Oxycodone 2 pills per day instead of 2 pills every 4 hrs. I explained to my doctor I need help because 1 pill doesnt last me 12 hrs. I have to constantly moving around all day to work to take care of my family. I dont have the luxury to have any downtime to rest my aching leg, swelling knees and hands. But the doctor said he cant give me more because of the DEA. So I seek other doctors and it's taking a lot of time out of my busy schedule. I have never use drug until now and isnt the purpose of these drug is to help people like us? I am just trying to be a mom, be a daughter, and be a good worker to support my family myself rather than being unemployed or on Wellsfare to put more burden to our society. But everyday is getting harder for me and I feel like I'm a criminal sneaking around although I've done nothing wrong.REPORT COMMENTS

Been a pain patient, first at Johns Hopkins, now in GA for over 30 yrs due to spine and trigiminal neuralgia. Finally went on low dose of oxycodone 2 yrs ago - 5 mg 2 times a day. I'm allergic to NSAIDs and many pain meds. Does it make me pain free? No, but it allows me to participate in life. Now a retired educator. Our family planned to move to FL, but now we are splitting up because I can't go where I can't get help. I hope , for their sake, that one day a family member is forced to live in constant pain, without recourse. If you are a true pain patient, meds don't make you high, just make some of life more liveable. What is wrong with the leaders in our communities that they have so little true concern for the person who is their neighbor. Yes, drug dealers need to go, but legitimate pain patients need help, not more despair. They already experience it daily.REPORT COMMENTS

The article expresses EVRY SINGLE FEELING AND EXPERIENCE I have endured. This is not only unfair, humiliating, and not to mention dangerous for so many reasons. I was taken care of by my GP, but he got scared ,worried about his practice. Completely stopped a 18 mos. Time period of medicinal Support. The pain, and thought process of coming off your life enduring meds, was horrible. For a year I went from pain clinic to pain clinic, only to have the meds dropped again, WHY, because the fibro pain was getting worse due to stress and a change of season, I also suffer with psoriasis, which let my feet bleeding and so swollen I couldn't walk. When I asked for support to add meds for my feet , I was "released" from this Dr.s care and then reported to my GP, I was drug seeking... I was ashamed, scared, and so angry that the condition of my life was so horrible, I don't even know how I was able to survive, maybe it was the anger!!!???REPORT COMMENTS

I am 62 and have disc disease. The pain is unbearable. There are artificial discs that can be used to eliminate this condition. The cost is prohibitive and insurance companies have refused to cover the procedure, which is done routinely in Europe. The only alternative is medication and the DEA has all but stopped Doctors from prescribing. The only way out as I see it is a bullet in the head. I am sure that this is what the powers that be are hoping for, one less burden to society.REPORT COMMENTS

I have Fibromyalgia and haven't found anything that works to relieve the pain, over the counter or prescribed. I hope someone will one day figure out what's different about a person's body who has fibromyalgia as opposed to those who don't have it. It just doesn't seem like it ought to be that hard to figure out. If it were taken more seriously, instead of doctors blowing you off as a hypochondriac of some kind, maybe a cure would be found, or at least some kind of relief.REPORT COMMENTS

My father is 65 and owns his lawn and landscaping company. He suffers from degenerative discs in his back, most have fused together and cause him agonizing pain. It is 7/17/2013 as I write this, the DEA shut down the Walgreen's distribution center and now my father cannot get his needed medicine along with ten's of thousands of others. My father is now looking at withdrawals and won't be-able to work unless he gets his medicine. This is what the DEA does when they play god.REPORT COMMENTS

I have rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, degenerative disk disease among other things. I'm in chronic pain. My doctor refuses to prescribe anything for pain. I can take 2 tramadol at night and that's it. We're not all addicts! I'm not looking to get high. I want some pain relief! I've gone to the pain clinic and they're a joke. They did zero for me. My quality of life would sure improve if I could get some pain relief.REPORT COMMENTS

I have been pretty luckywith my family Dr. He understands the pain that comes from Degenerative disk disease and osteoporosis. All people deserve to be treaties as humanely as me. I also suffer from migraines. If I couldn't be prescribed pain meds I would be in bed all day. Instead I am working full time, enjoying my grandchildren Ann exercising whenever the pain isn't debilitating! Get insurance companies and government out of medicine!REPORT COMMENTS

After an accident by a Dr. I was left with severed nerves and limited use of my right arm. As the injured area deteriorated it pulled my cervical collar out. After 6 surgeries for herniated, degenerated discs in my cervical collar, I recently had 2 discs removed and a plate and screws put in. I suffer from chronic pain everyday of my life, my Dr. Recently cut all my pain meds citing that they can be highly addictive and she is concerned. What! I have never abused a medication and take them as prescribed! But the DEA has sent letters and advisory warnings out and all the Dr.s are running scared. What about me? Now what do I do for my pain? I am disabled but with the meds could walk my dog, enjoy my yard, now I cannot do the everyday normal things anymore due to the pain level and no relief. Don't make everyone suffer because others abuse their meds!!!REPORT COMMENTS

It is Cruel to prevent those that are suffering with medically justified reasons for taking pain medication. I'm talking about the kind of pain that destroys one's quality of life. Allowing these people to suffer with conditions that without pain relief weakens the person physically and emotionally or puts these people into a situation that they feel that suicide is the only way out, Is just Barbaric! Perhaps that is what the DEA are trying to do? Eliminate as many disabled people by suicide, heart attacks, and strokes, or liver damage from Tylenol etc. creating this so called "pain pill abuse" epidemic. Funny thing about this '"pain pill abuse" epidemic, Is that it is now even easier to find the pain meds on the street then to get from a doctor.....uummmm think the DEA have spent our tax dollars scaring the wrong people!!!!!! In this forward country you would think we would be capable of helping people who suffer be able to get the most out of their lives. It is so sad and barbaric that we cannot provide this to those who need it.REPORT COMMENTS

We live in a sad society, this is just like if we outlawed guns only out laws will have guns, last week as I was crying in my pm doctors office showing him new results about my new medical conditions he ignores them and says I am faking it, or why do we go to a walgreens only to be ridiculed and questioned about our health codes and why are we taking this, the pharmasist called it good faith guidelines I call it invasion of privacy, what ever happen to patient doctor privaledge, well if I cant get any type of relief I am going to commit suicide but what does our government care. farewell to all good luck to our children who have to live where their is no privacy and you are labeled a drug user, instead of a patient !!!!!!!!!REPORT COMMENTS
