I live in horrendous pain, and even with the treatment I spend about half my life now in bed. Without access to medicine I would likely have ended my life by now. The restrictions hitting legitimate patients is punishing them for others misdeeds of others while destroying the so very small quality of life we are able to eek out on the margins. -
Mar 30th, 2017Jennifer H. from Great Falls, MT writes:
Please don't lump legitimate pain patients in with addicts. I know that legitimate pain patients can become dependent but that is not the same as trying to get high. We are trying to get relief. It's like being given a cancer diagnoses, stage 4 and you are told you are going to die but you don't you just get the pain for life. I have trigeminal neuralgia, chiari malformation, Ehlers Danlos syndrome, interstitial cystitis, ankylosing spondylitis, mast cell activation syndrome, degenerative disc disease, pelvic floor dysfunction and probably more I have forgotten and I had my meds reduced to half and then taken with in two months. I was offered suboxone if I didn't like it. As if I was an addict. I had not failed a count, a urine drug test or anything else they required it was just said I no longer needed it. I don't understand and I'm very angry. Please help us.REPORT COMMENTS

my issue: is the disc between L-4,L-5 Options: Fusion, total disc replacment or pain meds 1. i was going to have a fusion. happen to lose my insurance while all the paperwork was in motion so i had to cancell, which worked out well because it gave me time to look up the procedure, surprise! fusion 75-80 failure rate. total disc replacement nope not a FDA approved procedure for the lower back, next pain meds that the DEA wants to take away. So i look at the fusion like a care repair "sure we will fix your care 75-80 failure rate we can't put it back to what it was nor can we upgrade it in fact it may end up worse" so do i go to lansing, michigan to the DEA office with all my reports,my discs and say ok you want to play doctor you write out my scripts. we need doctors,we need medicine manufaction companys to helpREPORT COMMENTS

I'd like to address the politicians and the CDC. I'm just one of the many people out there suffering with chronic pain on a daily basis. Yet, I'm sure my voice and the voices of those like me, won't be heard because I don't have the clout and political pull that you do. Your fight against prescription opioid addiction is making extremely hard for people like me to continue to maintain some sort of quality of life. Many of us do not abuse our medications. We are aware of their addicting potential. We have gone through countless surgeries, nerve blocks, physical therapy and the endless other treatments, to no avail. All I ask is that you think of us and our quality of life. Your not fighting a war on opioids addiction, you're fighting a war on us, the people who live in silent chronic pain.REPORT COMMENTS

Just one look at my MRI and the doctors all say, "wow, you sure are managing your pain well". Not anymore because they don't prescribe the minute dose of the pain medicine which enabled me to stay active and athletic. With the pain eased I was exercising daily. With that along with clean living my back and whole body remained strong and then pain-free. What a paradox. No pain medicine and the agony of severe spinal stenosis and spondylitis is allowed to return. No bike riding, zero exercise and then the inability to do the stretching that I learned from physical therapy. Chronic pain is now interfering with my quality of life. At least my former antidepressant is not outlawed. I'll be back on that stuff and not living the happy, active life I have always loved.REPORT COMMENTS

I live with chronic pain 24/7. It takes so much joy away from being alive and there are days that I wish I would just die! The constant physical pain keeps me home bound and bed ridden most of the time and this is not living the life that God intended. The fear of being labeled as an addict and the doubt from doctors that your pain is real. I have medical documentation showing that I have legitimate debilitating physical pain, yet we have to suffer because of users that just want to get high, and it is so very unfair! My life has changed drastically due to my pain and it has caused me severe depression and anxiety. I'm so tired of not being able to function and enjoy life. Something needs to change in the medical world to give people like me some hope of better pain free tomorrow's, because as my life is now I feel more useless and helpless than ever. I just want relief and be able to do things again. No wonder the suicide rate is so high among chronic pain sufferers. We see no light at the end of the rainbow and we feel so isolated. I used to enjoy being able to do things, things that well people take for granted every day. Just walking hurts so badly and without pain medicine I fear that I am going to end up in a wheelchair! Did I mention that I am only 54 years old? This pain has been with me for 15 years and only continues to get worse with each passing day. I just want to be able to have some quality of life and be able to feel like laughing again. This pain has changed me completely and I find it almost impossible to feel happy about anything anymore. I feel doomed every day and this is no way to have to live when there are medications out there to help me get my life back!!!REPORT COMMENTS

Why is DEA targeting doctors? They intercept 4% of the illegal drugs coming into this country in spite of a budget that should be making deficit hawks choke to death. They are trying to reduce demand but they are insinuating themselves into the doctor/ patient relationship. Why? What right do they have to arbitrarily decide to just screw people in pain and decide what course of treatment doctors should take? All these doctors, the DEA, Congress, etc. they all think its in "our heads" that is until , if they ever, end up in chronic pain themselves. Its only real when it happens to them, when it happens to us its "in our heads". Doctors no longer practice & honor their oath to care for their patients & do no harm. They fear loosing their license, loss of money & the government which punishes them instead of the abusers & dealers. Chronic pain patients are therefore punished & made to suffer at the hands of the FDA, ATF & our own government. To seek alternative methods such as non addictive marijuana is legal in some states but illegal at the federal level. Is it any wonder suicide rates have increased greatly to be free of pain & the constant torture. I have no desire to be high nor do I drink alcohol however I would like some quality of life. Walgreens pharmacist would not fill my prescription called in by my physician. She said due to the February month being short I could not get them until the 26th today is the 22nd and the date on my bottle is the 24th I always get them two days early each month for fear I will again be denied them. This was not the first issue I have had since the New DEA laws. Now Walgreens has this new law where the day you "pick them up" is when the prescription starts; thisis ridiculous! A 30 day "rule" set forth by the DEA. I can not keep up with all the pharmacist new rules and their power plays. They DO make those who need it feel like drug seekers, adicts, sellers and all things illegal. I take Vicodin which is now on the DEAs list. A very small dose per day for seven years. The reason? I have a disease which nobody will or can cure! I'm stuck with the pain, a barbaric surgery every third month or pain medication. Those are my choices to live a normal life. Now pharmacys seem to be playing God with people's narcotic prescriptions. I can't tell you how many times I have been made to feel like a criminal because I get it two days early which is supposed to be allowed. The DEA gives these pharmacist way too much power and god forbid any one of them or their loved ones suffer from a chronic pain illness. There are drug addicts and abusers and sellers that do ruin it for ligitimate people who actually need medication, however that will exist no matter how much the DEA tightens their "laws". Go after heroin, cocaine, meth, crack or the several other street drugs plaguing our country and leave ligitimate patients in chronic pain alone! Start sanctioning these pharmacys who decide who and who can not have their PRESCRIBED BY A DOCTOR medications. Since when is a pharmacist more informative than a doctor? They count pills, put them in bottles and bag them; the computers do the important stuff now. Kiosks would be better than most pharmacist with a degree in pharmaceutical medicine and NOT a degree in internal medicine! It has to stop!REPORT COMMENTS

Sad and feeling hopeless due to my rx being cut by over half earlier this month and will be again toward the end of same month and I was already under-prescribed. The only reason for this is due to new guidelines effective July 1, 2017, which I'm under the threshold for max amount to be taken daily but my doctor fears losing her medical license. She'll continue to be able to work and I'll continue not being able to work or to do household chores. Taking a shower required 2 doses of meds due to pain level, and this was prior to this so called "wean". The only way out is permanent, not what I want to do but at this point, I can't continue suffering as I am. There is more kindness given to hurting pets than humans in the rural area in which I live. A pain clinic comes to the area twice a month and already had recommended that my Dr increase break thru meds but earlier this month, she refused to allow any so I no longer receive the generics, which were mostly as if taking sugar pills most of the time due to their extremely poor quality. She also took away 2 of the 3 long acting meds. The long acting ones no longer worked well since their reformulation but has given me many side effects that would have probably killed me in the end anyways. Nobody should have to suffer. Opiates have been around for over a hundred years and opium was discovered in 3500 BC. God put these plants on earth for a reason, nature's healing...synthetic copies are do not work as well. I go through withdrawals most every day due to the non steady medication that's released from the pills. I've tried many methods of pain management therapy. They are helpful but do not replace the medicine needed to control the level of pain. I'd love to work again, however, I am not able to take care of my own personal hygiene, let alone go out in public and be a service to others. The more I read, the more aware I am of how complex the entire system is. From pills coming from other countries without quality controls in place, to those in power being wined and dined and paid off to get their products in pharmacies and again at the doctor's office to get patient rx's filled, to the trips to pharmacies that may or may not have your medicine in stock. And of course, it's all about money, not a mission to actually help people that have had unfortunate accidents and did not ask for a life of severe chronic pain. I can't recommend answers but do wish that the doctors not feel pressured about losing their job in doing their duty to help their patients. Narcotics exist for a purpose. I never abused mine or did anything to break the "contract" but am paying the consequences for deaths in the northeast, though I did nothing to contribute to their demise.REPORT COMMENTS

100% agree. We deserve to have our quality of life back. To be afraid at 28 because of the way I was born that my two little ones have to or will have to suffer because I can't even get out of bed. We shouldn't have to live a life of misery and pain or fear like myself for our quality or what little quality some have left for themselves or their family's. This doesn't just affect the one person who truly like myself was born different or a person who unfortunately gets hurt in a accident which is not planned hence the word accident to not be able to live a functionally and pain/fear free life for ourselves and importantly our family and loved ones. My 9 year old should not have to be taking care of me it's the other way around but when mom can't get up without help because I can't get my medication without any good reason just a no and bye when I have been on the same does everyday for years, taking as prescribed not abusing or doing anything wrong now my daughter and son have to suffer. It breaks my heart for them more than the physical pain I'm in. It's becoming a emotional issue for my children and now affecting their quality of life. What horror and fear I have for them as they grow in this country we live in. The domino effect is not fair to the family's mine being such that it is affecting them and their quality of growing a normal life of great freedom in this great country of the United States of America.REPORT COMMENTS

I agree wholeheartedly that this topic has become a major issue in our so-called modern society. I know all too well from my own experiences the major issues surrounding the subject and over the past 20 years (I'm only 39 by the way) I have slowly needed to increase my pain medication due to increased pain, increased tolerance to the medication & additional injuries & new issues I now suffer from. I have ALWAYS taken my medication as prescribed &/or when it's needed, I NEVER pick up my medications early, I keep them all locked away in a safe for safekeeping, I only see one doctor & go to one Pharmacy for all of my medications, I get all of my diagnostic tests when requested by my doctor, I do physical therapy as often as possible/covered my my insurance, and I even perform daily exercises at home to help with the management of my pain...& while (after 20 years of severe often debilitating pain) I have come to be on somewhat of a large dose of medication, I have never abused it, nor will I ever because I know I will need it for the rest of my life. I do not take any street drugs and I do not sell any of my medications. & while I do not know all the circumstances involved or surrounding the doctors that I see I do know it is getting harder and harder to find a doctor willing to help me with my issues when it comes to my pain. The last five doctors that I have seen on a long term basis (in other words the few that were actually willing to help me during the last 15 or so years) who have prescribed me my pain medication have all either been arrested, lost their license, stopped practicing medicine, and/or left the country! Once again I currently find myself without a doctor & without any pain medication; & trying to find a doctor who is both willing and able to help me with my current crisis has become harder than ever before....putting me in a situation that no living human being today should have to find themselves in during this current day and age of modern medicine! Shame on our law makers for bringing it to this for SO MANY of the people that they are ment to be helping. There always has been and will likely always be addicts and abusers. So does this mean that we should close down and outlaw or fine & reform fast food chains because of obese food addicts in our "free" country? Or maybe we should stop selling tobacco because of all of the harrm we know it does to the millions who are addicted to cigarettes, cigars and chewing tobacco? And perhaps we ought to have another prohibition for alcohol?... or we can be realists & see how history has shown us that when people want or need any particular thing bad enough they will allow that particular thing to become the cause of more crime, leading to more abuse & create even more dangerous situations then before. And with the truth of circumstance is the millions and millions of people try to live in extreme pain every day the harder it becomes for them too find ways to manage their pain the more desperate they will likely tend to be/be willing to become just to be ABLE to survive. But I know from my own experience that no living thing should be forced to have to live every day in awful and excruciating pain with our lawmakers and law enforcers as the ones who are dictating what should and should not be allowed & what is best for those who suffer daily because of it, rather than our doctors, & Healthcare managers & professionals who actually know what they're doing & how best to treat their patients! It's time that Washington let our Doctor's actually do their jobs without fear of repercussion or involvement from government. We need to stand united in this issue sooner rather than later, because who knows where government involvement of what we "need" will end?!REPORT COMMENTS

I am a 55-year-old woman. I live in Lower Burrell Pennsylvania. I don't drink or smoke or take drugs. I have had severe nerve pain since 2009. I can't take NSAIDS because it raises my blood pressure. When I have taken them, I have gotten pyloric stenosis. I had to have a balloon put through my stomach several times, because where my stomach empties, had closed up from scarring. I was told by my gastro doctor and my PCP, "NEVER take NSAIDS again !!". My doctor, Dr. Heather Hanzlik had been treating me with pain medicine for the past 7 years. In August of 2016, she gave me my last prescription, and told me that she would no longer treat my pain. ABRUPTLY. No tapering at all. I had to take my last script and try to taper myself. She sent me to a pain clinic, but after waiting 3 months, with nothing for my pain, I was told that they only treated back pain. After I respectfully voiced my concerns and questions to Dr. Hanzlik, I received a letter in the mail saying that she would no longer be my doctor. It is March 2017. I have no doctor and no medicine. The pain gets so bad sometimes, I want to die. With all that is going on, I feel afraid to pick another doctor. I always liked Dr. Hanzlik. A friend had recommended her, and she had always been a very good doctor. Why are people with legitimate pain being treated like drug addicts? Why are we losing the medicine we need to function? Just like criminals will ALWAYS be able to obtain guns, no matter what the gun laws are. People that take drugs for recreation will ALWAY be able to get them, no matter what !! What are we, people with legitimate pain supposed to do??? I have even gone to the ED a couple of times when the pain was unbearable. I was told, "We don't treat chronic pain." Frankly, when the pain gets so bad that I want to die, I have thought about getting drugs off of the street, but I wouldn't even know how !! Is that what you want, people buying drugs from the street? DEA, I don't believe it is the people in legitimate pain overdosing. Maybe there have been SOME that have. I have gone online and looked at official coroner reports in different counties of Pennsylvania. It will show you how many people have overdosed, and what drugs people overdose with, and how many overdoses per area. You can get a lot of information. For the most part, the areas where the overdoses are, those are documented drug abuse areas. What does that tell you?? So why are you punishing sick people !!!!REPORT COMMENTS
