This war on “opioids” is actually a war on chronic incurable diseases. A war on chronic pain disease patients who benefit from opioid medications. Medications that enable millions of Americans relief of chronic debilitating pain associated with these diseases. 100 million Americans have one or more chronic incurable pain Disease. As the CDC, DEA, FDA, Medicaid and Medicare, and numerous other government agencies, are blaming Doctors for the over prescribing of opioid medication. NOBODY, is looking at or reading the statistics from chronic pain disease patients. How about NOT addressing these drugs as dangerous and addictive. When all else fails: physical therapy, exercise, over the counter medications and numerous injections etc, we chronic pain disease patients, are left with one option to help us cope, opioid pain medication. Lets address this medication as lifesaving and medically necessary for the million of Americans with chronic diseases. Chronic pain is a disease. Chronic pain disease patients are now the epidemic. The addiction rate of chronic pain disease patients is .02-.6 %. We do not misuse or abuse our medications. No other disease medication is scrutinized. We, as patients, are being denied, dismissed, overlooked and discriminated against, by our physicians, due to all the scrutiny associated with treating chronic pain disease with opioid medications. Our Dr's are afraid to treat us humanely and adequately. We have a disease that medication is readily accessible to us and we are being denied. We, pain patients, are being discriminated against, due to people who abuse illegal heroin, illegal fentanyl and/or misuse opioid medication and place the blame on everyone but themselves. This is a direct hunt for Doctors who prescribe life saving medication, for pain disease patients, that benefit from them. We have our privacy invaded, we no longer are able to have doctor/patient confidentiality. We now have insurance agencies, pharmacists, and other government agencies in our physicians offices. Monitoring and policing our physicians. Though the statistics show a reduction in, medically needed, opioid medications, death rates of overdoses from illegal opioids is rising. This system and laws are obviously not working. The specific causes of deaths also needs to be closely investigated. The opioid in the person's system needs to be specified. Was it an illegal opioid, was it opioid medication specifically for that person, was there other drugs or alcohol involved. All these questions need answers. We have a chronic disease. We want to be able to take care of our homes, our children, our selves, as much as possible, but without access to these life saving medications, we are unable to do so. We want to live, not just exist in pain 24/7. We need the government agencies to look at the real statistics, not the hand picked. These agencies are not physicians. They are trying to doctor us, patients, without a medical license. They are also trying to police our physicians. This is a war on a disease, medications, physicians and patients. The statistics do not differentiate what opioid drug attribute to a fatal overdose or misuse of medication. Was is an illegal drug, heroin, illegal fentanyl, carfentynal, was that person's legitimate medication? All these questions need answers. The information needs to be addressed. We need help. All the headlines, topics and stories on how opioids are bad and how people are abusing, misusing, overdosing, becoming addicted or dying from them. We need to look at the good they do and how they help our disease of chronic pain and the million of Americans who use them for some relief. The government needs to put the focus on illegal drugs coming into, being manufactured and distributed in this country, illegal fentanyl, illegal heroin, methamphetamine, cocaine and all other ILLEGAL DRUGS. People who abuse and misuse medication, not prescribed to them, illegal drugs, alcohol, sex, whatever it may be, will always find a way. Put the focus on that. Not the legally and medically necessary medications we patients need.

https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/user/login?destination=petition/create This petition goes to deaf ears. Its going to get even worse is what a physician told me. The suicides will increase and so will be good people having to go to the streets looking for relief. This world has gone total nuts. Trump is being fed incorrect info. Wonder if he even knows about the death panel that obama created. End days?

I didn't ask for this. I prefer not to be sick, not to be in pain every second of every day. But I am. I've been going through this abuse since 2000, and the ignorance among doctors and now our government is rampant. If a college age kid comes in asking for pain meds, there's your sign of possible addiction. People in thier 20s are young and will heal. I'm 58, I've got the xrays, MRIs, and other tests to prove I'm in pain, I'm old, I'm not going to heal or get better. See the difference? There are bodies that will heal, and bodies that won't. Use common sense.

Sorry about the repetition on some of my letters. Sometimes when I get angry and write a somewhat hatefull letter, I push the summit button and go see if my letter has been posted. A lot of times it takes a little while to be posted. Well now I know. Ive been summiting posts for a couple of weeks since I first saw this cite. I cant wait until they come up with real tests that will show who is and how much it takes to help quality of life. Just because we have X-rays, brain scans {which really gave me a lot of hope} but evidently carries no weight in the medical quackery! Just because you have evidence of your cause of pain, They still look at us stupid! New comers to the medical profession are first tought how to look us in the face and straight up lie to us. No wander the medical profession is having so much trouble getting new doctors and nurses. And we cant look down on the people who have spent years of their lives to learn to care for us and to prepare a better life for their families. They are tought that they are really helping instead of causing so much pain and suffering. Let us not forgive them because they know not what they do, but make them accountable and aware of the mental anguish and long suffering they are infliction. Lets keep the posts coming and keep the faith what ever that means to you! P.S. keep lookn up

This isn't a democrat or republican issue, it's a quality of life, human being issue. My father and I had this argument when I was in college many years ago (I get it now by the way), quantity of life vs quality of life. Congratulations on obviously having the luxury of not being forced to make that choice.... yet. Either a car wreck, or cancer, or some other life tragedy affect you personally, or one of your loved ones during your lifetime. I know that since 1 in 3 families will have have a relative diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. I was hit head-on by a large truck, yet managed to survive. I had to learn to walk again and have hardware in various parts of my body. Now, brace yourself, because Iwas an educator prior to my car accident and I'm mow completing my doctorate in psychology, so I'm well versed in doing my research. Nearly 1.3 million people die in road crashes each year, on average 3,287 deaths a day. An additional 20-50 million are injured or disabled. More than half of all road traffic deaths occur among young adults ages 15-44. Road traffic crashes rank as the 9th leading cause of death and account for 2.2% of all deaths globally. Road crashes are the leading cause of death among young people ages 15-29, and the second leading cause of death worldwide among young people ages 5-14. Each year nearly 400,000 people under 25 die on the world's roads, on average over 1,000 a day. Over 90% of all road fatalities occur in low and middle-income countries, which have less than half of the world's vehicles. Road crashes cost USD $518 billion globally, costing individual countries from 1-2% of their annual GDP. Road crashes cost low and middle-income countries USD $65 billion annually, exceeding the total amount received in developmental assistance. Unless action is taken, road traffic injuries are predicted to become the fifth leading cause of death by 2030. For whatever reason, the DEA seems to believe that simply cutting off patients access to prescribed narcotic medications will eliminate problematic behaviors. Would you even dream of doing that to heart patients or those with diabetes? Of course not. As you've already seen, patients have begun to resort to heroin, or the ultimate final resort -- suicide. And let's be honest.... that's only the tip of the iceberg. Like you, it's only just begun. Some pain management patients are truly as straight as an arrow. I've rarely ever had a drink in my life. I've never seen street drugs in my life (would run run them if I had), and never smoked a cigarette. I'm the one that one exercise my second amendment right when pushed to the brink. I just pray daily it never gets that badly.

Just wait! It is inevitable that your daughter, husband, mother, son, father, yourself,etc... Will be writhing in pain and BEGGING for the relief that only opiates can give. Karma is just that way. Are you sure you can handle watching you're loved ones in intractable, horrific, chronic pain? It is so wrong to deny chronic pain patients the medicine they need. It is inhumane and torturous. How dare you, until you've walked in our shoes! HOW DARE YOU!!!

Having read a great number of posts for this petition,I realized that most of us are at a point where quality of life issues far outweigh the risk of addiction. Unfortunately, the drug epidemic/hysteria that's taken over our country is getting gradually worse with several states suing drug manufacturer's and the FDA asking one in particular(Endo Pharma)to voluntarily remove their narcotic painkiller from the market. How this will dramatically reduce the number of deaths each year seems unclear since most law abiding citizens in chronic pain cannot get prescribed these meds anyway. Now the pharmaceutical industry,as with physician's being constantly bombarded with lawsuits, reprimand, fear of arrest etc...even though neither have done anything illegal or wrong and certainly acting for the public good will be at the forefront of blame for those irresponsible and causing everyone else potential harm with more prohibition and scare tactics carried out by the federal government in a futile effort to curb drug use.

Well by now you guys probably think I am Crazy. I guess you could say that I rant and rave about our treatment of the health care system. I really am tired of hurting all the time and not getting to enjoy hardly any quality of any part of life. I have to believe that our government and health care system is looking to our greater good and without knowing are causing undue agony, stress and mental anguish. I just cant see that bad people are control our health care and future any for seen future? We need to make our situation known to the public and the people around us that might not how our lives are. Lets make it known to everyone!

I have suffered from severe rheumatoid arthritis for 20 plus years, took Motrin, Napersen, ending up in the hosipital bleeding internally. Then put on prednisone which ended up making gain tons of weight distroying my back, giving me diabetes, causing kidney disease, heart problems, now I have a pacemaker. Side effects from prednisone. All from chronic pain. After suffering for 18 years from joint pain and severe back pain my doctor put me on opioids. Not huge amounts, but what a change, I had some kind of life again.10 years on opioids with no increases or problems. My doctor retired, my new doctor tells me, new guideline, we have to cut you off opioids, there's a epidemic. I say, I have been doing fine for years. Doesn't matter, I'm taking you off. Oh and because of my kidney disease, no Motrin, no nothing. She says you'll have to learn to live with the pain. It's how things are now. Only people with cancer. Take a pain class. Now I'm some kind of bad person. Treated like a drug addict. The doctors put me in this position and now treat me like garbage. You hear about the people who misuse pain meds. But no one wants to hear about the people who where doing fine on their meds. Now we're the forgotten, the druggies, I would never wish for a life like this.

I commented about a week ago over this. I was so angry. Now it's frustration more than anything. I read about these people like me who suffer from chronic pain in my older years and it breaks my heart to see what you are doing to the elderly in this country. Why can't you allow them to be comfortable with the few years or months or days they have left? I don't understand this. CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE does NOT mean it controls you, it means that the government is controlling your use of it. However, each time someone finds out you have to take pain medication, if you get sad, they say, Oh, well you know they are on pain meds. If you get angry, it's Oh, well, you know they are on pain meds. If you get depressed, it's Oh, well you know they are on pain meds. It seems people who take medication for REAL pain have no right to have emotions. I'm sad, depressed and angry because I hurt all the time and I am constantly being judged by people who know nothing about me. Therefore, I keep it to myself so, now, the government steps in and all of a sudden I have no rights whatsoever to manage my own life. Just because someone is getting old does not mean they are not cognizant or need a babysitter. I would have a life if you would not scare the hell out of my doctor who knows my medical history. I would rather be dead than live like this everyday. A doctor I worked for back in the 60s made the statement to me over and over that the government was leading the medical industry into socialized medicine. I laughed at the time but, you know what? He was right!!! I think of what he said every day now and when I repeat it, I get laughed at too. But, remember you healthy young people that life does not always end the way we plan it in our older years. There will be a day that those making these decisions for us will have to eat their own platter full in their later years too. I hope it will be worth it when you think back on your decisions and lack of care for those who truly need relief from constant pain. Also, this medical marijuana you think you have? Well, the truth of the matter is this.....Marijuana is a plant that has been around for a long time but, now, the government will be able to put it under controlled substance. I personally don't want any part of it because I'm not looking for a mind altering drug and I do not like the way it makes you think and feel. The pain medication I am on has no effect on my thinking capacity. But, I guess to each his own. Just thought I would throw that in.

Who ever the person is that would be on pain patients side in all this abuse of authority over steeping their bounds playing GOD with peoples lives. The person who first said, ha lets screw up the lives of people who are already abused, suffering needlessly and being blamed for the prescription medication on the street. That uncaring peace of human waste that is out of his or her mind thinking that we the suffering are giving up our almost useless medication that are prescribed to us, no one would pay good money for or the law would know right off who it was because who they sold it to would have killed them? A human being that would do all this crap to another group of human sufferers would have to have a mental disorder or just hates other fellow human beings. Have no use of fellowship and only wants to see pain and evil probably the devils advocate or at least a worshiper? Who torcher little animals and hates to see any love for life or see any type of sympathy or kindness! Please help us flush this thorn in our side and help us look up and forward to living a better quality of life. P.S. I am truly sorry for so many duplicate letters Truly sorry

People wake up the Feds are giving the states much needed money to fund behavioral health clinics that they ignored until this trumped up opioid epidemic. I am curious if we will ever see the true numbers of people who actually overdose while on long-term pain medication for legitimate reasons. Of course we won't how many addicts have the Feds, States, and doctors made as a result of restricting the use of prescription medication?

I will write no more and let people use their own minds to make decisions about what is the problem with medication if you make things write and help hurting citizens get the relief they desperately deserve and need to function period. I wont say anything about the government and DEA have the drug making companies making prescriptions less than half the strength they say . Most of the medication is over the counter and has almost no affect on the pain. I wont tell them that they are making people believe that they are on a very high and dangerous level medication and make us feel like we do have a drug problem. And the real problem is they want to stock pill the real medication so it can make it to the street where it is more profit for the economy. If patients are using it for its intended use it would be of no use for them! YOU MAKE PEOPLE MAKE THESE ACTURIZATIONS WONDERING WHY THEY ARE BEING SO BADLY ABUSED? These DRUGS are made to help chronic pain patients so let us have our pain prescriptions

I am a patient who underwent 2 spinal fusions within 8 months of each other. I suffer from CHRONIC low back pain DAILY. I am now running into the problem with my surgeon and pain and rehabilitation doctors refusing to prescribe pain medications as I need them. This is a horrible problem to have. My pain stops me from doing and completing everyday life activities. It is very frustrating for me to rely on family as much as I do because I cannot complete tasks or engage in activities independently because if my pain levels at times. THUS NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED SOOBERVTHSN LATER WITH GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS.

we the people who are suffering have to be heard about the abuse we go through every day. lets ask the people who are controlling the doctor pen and prescription pads how they would like to exist every day abusing their families and closest to them, because their pain is so severe, looking out the window watching everything they worked for go down the drain, hearing of new tougher laws that wont do a thing to stop the drug problem but will hurt pain patience. We need them to suffer a while. That will never happen because they are better than us, they have rules for us and then theirs. The patience that is truly suffering an know their limits of what they can an cant do arnt really bothered by lost dreams or no more enjoying life at all because of their illness and long suffering but could tolerate some life with what they have left if they could just have their PAIN CONTROLLED. Their can be no overdose in any person by the amount you can take on a bottle, for instance three pills a day is on the bottle, for that prescription an that patient { unless other wise prescribed by your doctor or physician } then you go to a stronger medication an weather or not the doctor lies to you like mine, their are always another medication or they will invent one . But a true overdose cannot happen if a doctor is prescribing the proper medication or narcotic because the real pain patient only takes what they need to stop suffering an not suffering is our HIGH!!!. It has been almost ten years for my long suffering and I am just being honest I am at my end. When I first started taking pain medication Doctor Mark Swanson of Blue Ridge Pain Management told me that the morphine sulphate ir was a synthetic and wouldn't need to adjust much but that we would have to work up to what your body needs and the hydrocodone will help with the break through and some inflammatory would help also. Ive been to several doctors after that, and as youll know the rules have changed { it is now illegal to need a prescription that helps} doctors arnt allowed to tell the truth now about pain meds. I was told by my new pain doctor that methodone was a new pain med an a new patch they had out were also good. I looked them up not on my home computer but a libreary, for some reason they don't read the same. I was born in the morning but it wasn't this morning. Ol was also told having a cents of humor or joking was a sign of a drug seeker. I really don't know if they want real pain people to try an see if street drugs can stop pain or try an see if we will do something out of character or real dumb then say look told you so. Couple years ago when states started legalizing marijuana I was getting no help being legal so I TRIED IT but I didn't inhale! No dis{President Clinton}, Didn't help me { wrong kind maybe} Anyway hard on my lungs? As much as they media says people are turning to herion I BELIEVE THEY WANT US TO TRY THAT. Not for me someone will have to do that, no needles for me, sorry. Gotta tell you not a fan of this suffering, maybe something new soon on one side or the other before long if our legal system wont help we, or I am gonna try an stop the PAIN some how? DO THE RIGHT THING GOV, DOCTORS, LAWS, DEA, FDA or SOMEONE DO THE RIGHT THING HELP US

I have been told by my doctors all of my life that I have a very high pain tolerance, however, now at age 63, I am in constant pain in my back. This has been going on since 2007. I got insurance last year and went to see an orthopedic surgeon FOR MY BACK. However, I was referred to his partner who does hip replacements because I also had to have one and the bone in my upper thigh had begun deteriorating due to not having surgery earlier. They told me a lot of times that will alleviate the back pain. Well, I had the total hip replacement and it absolutely gave me a new life. However, once I took myself off of the pain meds, the back pain began to return. Now, it's back with a vengeance. I don't have the money to pay for more surgery and now they are telling me I have to pay $300 every 3 months for a drug screen. I live on social security and I DON'T HAVE that much money to spare. Not only do I resent being treated like a drug addict but, I'm sick and tired of every time a new doctor/politician/pharmacist comes along with a GREAT idea/opinion for pain management, they either don't work, have bad side effects or are addicting. They get you started on these drugs and then when you have a somewhat normal life they rip the rug out from under you, even though you take your medicines as prescribed. I am now back in my recliner, sleeping and sitting, with no life, once again. I will not let them put me back on anything because it's just a matter of time before they decide it will be bad for you too. I'm fed up with all of the money spent on just trying to have a life where I can clean my own house and do my own grocery shopping without pain. This may sound mean but, I hope all of these people making decisions for the rest of us who are NOT drug addicts get a little taste of what this feels like to live every single day and every single hour of their life in pain with no relief. I used to be like them because of the fact that I DO have a high pain tolerance but, since it happened to me, I will NEVER point my finger at someone again when they are truly in pain. No one knows what it's like until they walk a mile in your shoes. Oh yeah, and those people who accuse us of being overweight and that is causing your pain, well, let me just tell you that when you can't walk or do normal activity, YOU ARE GOING TO BECOME OVERWEIGHT!!!!! Since I had my hip replacement in December (6 months ago) I have lost 60 lbs. I did not change my diet, I just have been able to move for the first time since 2007!!! So, now, I will just go back to sitting again, I guess. At least, before these new laws trying to prevent true drug addicts who only want them for the psychological effects, I did have a short period of knowing what it was like to not have pain. Personally, I think they should outlaw coffee, alcohol, cigarettes, oh, and yeah, cars....yes, those kill people too. And, people are definitely addicted to them! And, yes, TV and computers and cell phones, let's get rid of that! The list goes on and on! Sorry for the rant, but, I am so angry right now! I can't wait for the next NEW thing to come down the line that we need to avoid because it might kill us. By the way, we are all going to die sooner or later anyway.

I am so glad to find all these petitions trying to help fix the problem of prescription Drugs. I on disability for back, neck & heart disease an a couple of weeks age the pain caused my heart rate to excel and my pace maker shocked it to slow it down. this not being the first time getting shocked, the last time it shocked me three times in about 3 or 4 minutes, so I new if I didn't try to calm myself and quickly it was gonna happen again. I gotta tell you that torcher is almost as bad as the pain, the shock will eventually stop the PAIN hardly ever does! Have you fellow pain sufferers tried to push your loved ones away because you know what hell you are putting them through? rather them be happy than have to put up with the abuse you are putting them through every day. People who don't live this life have no idea. They don't know your best friends and close family is no more and you no your spouse could use a long break from your abuse! If we could just get some relief LIFE would be so much better, your are convinced you've done something that somehow a drug test went wrong somehow maybe you didn't know the salad dressing could mess up a drug test? Would someone please tell me what I did wrong [ AND YOU HAVE DONE NOTHING WRONG EXCEPT TRUSTED A LYING PHYSISHIN } . Our leaders cant control the crooked drug flow so too bad for us { SUFFER } We know they have a tough job but COME ON literally GIVE US A BREAK P.S. Ive always loved life until know

I am a 56 year old woman who told my surgeon that I did NOT want spinal fusion surgery. I was assured that I was undergoing a "new non fusion surgery" in August 2009. I found out 3 months later, in the emergency room for the 3rd time after surgery, that the very well-paid surgeon lied to me and HAD fused L3,4,5. Subsequently I sought treatment from the Head of Neurosurgery at Duke Medical Center, Dr Robert Isaac, that I had been fused to an undiagnosed PARS fracture and I had developed flat back syndrome. I was in more pain by 2010 than I had ever been before. In 2013 I could no longer tolerate the intractable pain and Dr. Paul Tsahakis realigned my spine and fused 9 levels from T10 through L5/S1 and bilaterally anchored through both iliac wings in a 2 day operation requiring 2 surgeons. That was October 2015. It's now June 2017, and my pain is at an all-time high. After multiple MRI'S, xrays and CT scans, I'm told I need ADDITIONAL SURGERIES because several screws are loose. I don't know how much longer I can live like this. My pain is never ending. It's never been "controlled" only slightly mitigated. I have not been on a vacation since 2010. Seven years. I rarely leave my home. I'm unable to sleep. Lift more than 5 lbs. Forget work - I can barely stand long enough to wash dishes. I can't stand for anyone to even touch my back. Forget intimacy. Please stop this never ending insanity. Please.

I could not agree more! I have been diagnosed with the following: ms, fibromyalgia, chronic pain syndrome, chronic fatigue syndrome, osteoarthritis, severe vit. d def, pinched nerves, bulging discs, both of my knees have to have full replacements. I had been on a couple of narcotics since 2004-- OxyContin 80mg ER being one of them. it allowed me to be able to get up~ work a few hours a day, garden, and take basic care of my family!! However, with that... I was viewed by some of my doctors as a drug addict, not to mention my pharmacy which ive been with for many years!!! it angers me in every aspect for another professional to judge me bc I have some serious health problems and they are fully aware of it!!! I could see a few years ago....bc of some unfortunate outcomes... because this issue cont. to be pushed and taking over board!!!... that sooner or later... chronic pain patients such as myself.... would be fighting for my rights and the rights of others like me.... just to be able to obtain the medications we need just so we can live a SEMI normal life. I had no choice but to accept years ago... I can no longer snow ski, play raquet ball, tennis my list goes on and on... but I eventually accepted that. now... I'm just thrilled to be able to get up and work a few hours ea day. garden, and primarily and most importantly... care for my family!! Why does this have to be such an issue for patients like myself who live in hell.... literatlly every min of everyday just praying for some relief bc the pain is so Intense & horrible... all I do is cry, get physically sick to my stomach... that list goes on and on as well! I sincerely feel sympathy for physicians... bc had these laws not gone overboard.... they wouldn't have constant fear of caring for their patients who suffer whether its acute or chronic pain. I could go on & on and really elaborate on facts etc but my pain has started and its intense. These laws need to be modified for patients such as myself so we may get out of bed and actually smile some!!!

Most addicts don't go to doctors so stop treating us legitimate patients and our doctors like criminals.

I believe the DEA is over stepping their bounds when it comes to how doctors treat their patients. They have no idea what we are going through and I don't think they really care they are just trying to prove a point. Let doctors do what they are trained for and stop trying to control them. Pain is no fun to be in and when you can no longer enjoy life what do you have. God put these doctors here to help people like us. We are not drug addicts we just want to live a half way decent life with our families. Life is short we shouldn't have to live it always in pain when it can be prevented.
