You wouldn't go to a foreign country and expect them to cater to you and learn YOUR language when it was YOUR CHOICE to come to THEIR COUNTRY so why does America "require" one to be bilingual in Spanish in most jobs nowadays?? :/

US government jobs requiring Spanish proficiency. That is twisted. Maybe we will all speak Spanish soon. To hell with the English language. Who cares if it is America. A high school graduate at my govt. job just got promoted to a job that pays more than my job. I have a college degree, performed the duties of the position but I dont speak fluent Spanish (read not Mexican) so I lose.

I live in Colorado and finished my Master's in Communication this summer. I have applied to countless jobs, and finally after months of rejection I asked the Colorado State Human Services HR office why I was not selected for a position. I was told it was because I do not speak Spanish but that my work history and skills are impressive; speaking Spanish was not even part of the required skills. The position is not service related and does not require daily contact with Spanish-speaking individuals. If someone in this country doesn't speak English, it's more likely than not that they are illegal aliens; lawful citizens should not be denied jobs and services because they are unable to cater to people who do not pay taxes and use our services anyway.

I was the first in my family to get a college education- came from a single family household whose mother was subjected to years of abuse by father- we moved from boston to California when I was nine for a "better life " out of the projects- I finished my RN degree as a single mom - here in California my chances of getting a job now are slim to none- over 90% of workers at the clinic I work at are Mexican- majority of the workers at the hospital are now too- and its climbing- I worked SO hard as a single mom to get a college education- now I cant get a job in the country I was born in - in the state that I lived most of my life unless I speak Spanish ...its not fair- other nationalities can call on the "discrimination" practice- but we don't have that option

I am currently struggling to find a job in the medical field in California, no luck so far because I only speak perfect, fluent English, even though I have almost 20 years of experience. Absolutely being discriminated against and sick of it!!

Hmmm I wonder if I could go to a Spanish speaking country and ask them to speak English, oh I forgot I CAN'T! Smh it's very unfair to people who spent thousands of dollars on a career they can't have because they are not bilingual. This is such discrimination and I hate it

America's first language is ENGLISH. It's a shame that you cannot get a job because you do not know Spanish. America is a melting pot. What about catering to people that speak French, German, or Chinese. This is why everybody needs to learn to speak English, not Spanish. This way we can ALL communicate effectively with each other in one uniform language. Also, most of the people that are hired that speak Spanish, are not qualified to do the other duties of the job.

My wife was let go from the place she worked for nearly 9 years because Management wanted a bilingual person to have her job. She has spent the last 3 months being rejected job after job because she's not bilingual. It is disheartening to be an American.

9 out of 10 jobs that would be a perfect fit for me require me to be bilingual in Spanish. I cant even apply for these jobs which is discriminatory at the get go

So I just spent 6+ years in college to become a physician and now they are telling me that not knowing Spanish will greatly hinder my chances of getting hired? America needs more health care providers, why would you turn down educated medical workers because they cannot cater to Spanish speakers? This is very much a discrimination action against non-bilingual speakers. Why punish an educated workforce that is willing to work, in need of supporting their families, and contributing to the American economy. I am very disappointed in the way this is being handled.

My wife is being let go from here current position. She was told by the new company owners that just aquired her company that she is going to be let go due to the fact that she does not speak Spanish. My wife has a masters degree and many years of experience. Once again discrimination wins again. It's a shame

I am not bilingual. I am an American that speaks English. If I was applying for a translators job, I would understand being denied, but I am denied work in my own social work field. This does deteriorate the job opportunities and does nothing to help Latinos and others to assimilate. Please help middle class America!

This practice of not hiring English speaking US Born is outrageous. I have been overlooked and downright excused since I do not speak spanish. I work in the health care field and I will not be able to move up in my career unless I can speak spanish. This is clearly a case of discrimination. Where is the NAACP now. Oh thats right, I am a White Male, so NO ONE cares. KW
