As an unemployed American citizen - fluent in English, my native language; why can't I get a job if I am NOT bilingual? This is AMERICA!

I was denied several times for not being fluent in Spanish. I'm a human resources Manager. English is the official language of California. See Article 3 Section 6 (a-d) of the CA constitution. I have a master's degree in my field but I'm finding it difficult to continue practicing. Imagine a medical doctor facing the same challenges just because he/she lives in San Diego CA.

In response to "Someone from New York's" comment: although I agree with you in regard to people learning another language and the benefits for doing so, I am appalled at your blatant attempt at demeaning others. What a world you must live in if you feel that others do not have a right to voice their opinions. This is America and the problem is that our citizens (all races) have not chosen to force government to implement a national language. Without a national language in place, there will continue to be this divisive attitude and criticism of others. We are a very confused nation and to see that, all we have to do is look at Congress. People such as yourself do nothing more than help to perpetuate the negativity. If a person does not choose to take the time, energy and resources to learn another language, that should be their choice in life. That is the beauty of America. We are not forced to do something we do not want to do, and that choice to not do so should not be criticized nor penalized by stymying one's ability to earn a living. Bottom line, until our government chooses a national language, whatever that may be, we will continue to have these issues. Preferably in my opinion, that language will be English, as I do not choose to want to spend my time learning another language. I appreciate my intellect quite as it is, thank you very much!

I just went to two job interviews today and neither specified that I needed to be bilingual, yet both employers made it clear they needed me to be well versed in Spanish. Even one business asked me to read a script in Spanish to assess my proficiency. I felt like an utter fool and more than likely will not get either job even though I was highly qualified for either position. It is sad that I now have resentment towards my fluent Spanish speaking mother for not teaching me Spanish. This is a travesty.

How about all 252 of you learn a second language - believe me, your neural networks will activate easier and you'll have a higher IQ (the research is available). Don't limit yourself to Spanish either, you can learn French, German, Italian, Chinese, etc. Maybe learn English as well since some of you have some serious grammatical and spelling errors. Good Luck!

I agree as many other do, I am a professional and because now a growing increase of required Spanish bilingual skills is mandatory to get a job, I cannot even apply for jobs that otherwise I am more than qualified to perform. Then this asks the question, who is getting these jobs? People who were not born in America, but are second, or third generation Hispanics. Also, about 90% of those that cannot speak English are usually not legal, so why are we as a country catering to them, and not giving Americans the jobs they need so much! This petition should be put on all social sites, as I know a lot of people do not know of this petition.

I live in Miami and basically went to school for nothing. I am unable to work in the field I chose because I don't speak Spanish. Funny I don't have a job but people who don't speak English here do?? Something is wrong with this picture.

I I use to live in Minnesota, I found a job in a week being there making a decent amount to live one, I come out to california last year in June 2013 and I still can't find a job. I don't even get a call or even looked at since I am not bilingual. I have college education behind me in the medical field and experience also. It's very frustrating when this is AMERICA. Why should we cater to the others who can't speak english? If we went to your country we would have to learn how to speak your language before we could even get a job. I just think this is ridiculous. I think us American people should be considered for employment first and english should be a known language for anyone living in america. I'm tired of being treated as minority. I have been applying for jobs here since June. It's one out 20 that don't want bilingual. Come one people. We need to stop this.

This is a very big problem here in LA. Most jobs want you to be bilingual in either spanish or korean. It's even more prominent in the fashion industry here!

I too think it is unfair to be denied a job in the U.S. simply because you don't speak Spanish. Half the time the Spanish speaking employees have such heavy accents I can't understand their English yet they get work and I don't.
