English is the language of the land and other immigrants learn it or know to bring some one who does Spanish should be know no exception. Dont discriminate against native US English speakers or those who migrated and learned the language of the land. It breeds resentment and more anonymous calls to ICE.Jun 24th, 2014Someone from Los Angeles, CA signed.

I've been on the job search for a year now. I can be a hard worker in a fast paced environment, and I have many talents but got turned down on every job I applied to because I don't speak Spanish and jobs are given to immigrants because they know it yet not English in an English speaking country. I believe that it's unfair to me and other people on a job search that have very good work ethic but don't get hired because they don't know a foreign language.REPORT COMMENTS

It is close to impossible to get a job now if you do not speak Spanish in NYC. I have been on many interviews and almost every interviewer has asked me if I speak Spanish or if I am planning to learn it. I live in America so I do not speak Spanish and I am not planning to learn it. Also, when you are looking for jobs, it would usually say Bilingual/Spanish preferred but now it usually says SPANISH REQUIRED! It is ridiculous!REPORT COMMENTS

It took me sleeping on someones floor and a total of four years to find something remotely decent in pay aside from scrubbing toilets to provide for my family because I'm not bi-lingual. Lack of skills I can understand but that wasn't the problem. Now I'm forced to force my children to learn Spanish so they won't have the same issue and they just like myself are struggling to learn the language. It's wrong!REPORT COMMENTS

Get the word out! This IS discrimination. Americans who can't speak Spanish are being discriminated due to their national origin where the primary language spoken in the United States is English! Nobody in my family speaks Spanish. I can't speak Spanish. I have NO desire to learn Spanish. Yet, I couldn't find work because I could not speak Spanish! Why do English speaking Americans have to learn how to speak Spanish in order to accommodate people who are in America illegally? It's not fair and these needs to be addressed to the EEOC and recognized as a valid discrimination problem (already sent them a letter and was told that this is NOT a problem). Speaking Spanish should be a plus, not a MUST!REPORT COMMENTS

As a resident of Miami,Fl it is apparent that in order to live, thrive in this city, bilingual only need to apply. If one is to American, you are looked upon as a foreigner, spanish speakers chastise you if you dont speak spanish. I would say 90% of job posting require bilingual candidates preferred, must, required,or you will not be considered.English speakers are a commodity and often are ignored and any help or service is extremely frustrating.I feel I am being forced out of my own country and city and having to relocate elsewhere just to have those opportunities.REPORT COMMENTS

I can understand this concern. I am an African American who Did learn to speak Spanish, but ONLY because I Wanted to. I am studying to become a Medical Interpreter because it is my passion. Language is something that takes time and is something that you have to really WANT to learn. Becoming bilingual absolutely should Not be placed as a burden on the citizens of a country in order to accommodate the greed of Businesses and Corporations. I can understand the need to hire bilingual individuals to represent a company, but there should be an "Affirmative Action" used to be sure that English Speaking, American Citizens will have a fair chance to be hired at each company or business. There needs to be a Balance. It is Ridiculous for an American Business or Organization to be allowed to deny a U.S. citizen a job because of not being bilingual. The national language of the U.S. is English and whoever chooses to immigrate here, MUST be required to LEARN ENGLISH to accommodate Americans, Not the other way around. Americans are required to learn the language of any other country we choose to visit or immigrate to. The same should apply to immigrants who choose to move to the U.S.REPORT COMMENTS

Why should I have to learn Spanish? This is America! If we go to France or some other foreign country, I wouldn't expect them to speak English to accommodate us. Make the Hispanics, Latinos, and Mexicans learn/speak English!REPORT COMMENTS

About 80% of the job postings in Los Angeles require applicants to be Spanish speaking. They will hire a less qualified applicant over a more qualified applicant because of this. This is America. I thought people who came here had to learn OUR language....not the other way around. Obviously, there is a need for translators in ALL languages. But when speaking a foreign language becomes the requirement for getting any employment at all, that speaks volumes. It is disgusting what you politicians have let happen to this nation. It's discrimination against LEGAL citizensREPORT COMMENTS

I live in Miami Florida. I have been working at the same preschool for 13 years just to find out that they are closing the center. So I started looking for early childhood work in my area. Most of the preschool jobs want teachers that speak Spanish and English. They say that the English speaking parents want their kids to learn Spanish, so they are asking could the teachers teach Spanish while the kids are young, because they say that Miami is a Spanish speaking place and they want their kids to be ready when it's time for theim to get a job. Wow now I can't find work because I don't speak Spanish and on top of that I'm African American with no Spanish background in my family.REPORT COMMENTS

I am discriminated against when I am not eligible for certain careers due to not being able to speak Spanish fluently. Becoming bilingual is not easy, in fact, some studies say acquiring a new language as an adult can be incredibly difficult for biological and developmental reasons. I can NOT easily go out and become bilingual to be a competitive applicant, like you can do with other skills such as: computer use, typing, phone skills, customer service skills, etc. Overall a very discriminatory practice...but will probably never change. Sad.REPORT COMMENTS
