I am hispanic but was raised speaking English, I am limited jobs because they ask for bilingual only. I do think it's the same as the sex race and age. It should not be required in any job posting -

As a minority, discrimination is a sensitive word, and most minorities know the feelings. But what I am not understanding is how those same minorities are supporting and applying those same discriminatory practices that cause them concerns. Well, when seeking employment it has become such a problem, and as a result, people are rising against such practices as "bi-lingual only" as a job requirement. This starts a fight, that many want to fight! when it comes to survival. While some things maybe for sale, there are other things that is NOT! and one of those things is English as America's primary language. Together we stand, and divide we will fall! Take a STAND!REPORT COMMENTS

I have been seeking a job for 5 years. Every position in Miami, Florida requires "must be bi-lingual." This is outrageous. I am an able-bodied, English speaking U.S. citizen, educated in England. I am discriminated against for not speaking Spanish and also my age. Mr. Obama, do something for your people, please!REPORT COMMENTS

I've been out of work for a year, for the first time in my life I have not been able to get a job because more and more jobs now have been taken over with just bilingual jobs. I live about 40 min from the border and it doesn't help, I needed to move here for my family and I cannot get a job. Obama has fought for the right to not discriminate individuals who do not speak English, and he has helped them to be able to get jobs. I don't think he knows that now it is being over run and the same people he was helping are the same people who now have the advantage to get a job in the U.S. I can't even get a job at a retail store because of this, I have experience in customer service/call centers but can't even use my skills anymore. Help us, help the ones you stopped helping and allow us to get a job freely here without worrying about being bilingual. Stop taking our rights away and just let us do what we need to do for our families too. If immigrants can be here illegally at least make it easier for us so we don't lose our jobs to them.REPORT COMMENTS

Agree with all comments here. Why cater to so many Mexicans, many of whom are living here without permission? The logical thing to do is require THEM to learn English. It is the fair thing to do. Allowing companies to give preference to bilingual IS discrimination, thus narrowing the options for English-speaking citizens. PLEASE, PLEASE make it unlawful to give preference to Spanish. Why do you want to make it so much harder for citizens and native English-speaking citizens??REPORT COMMENTS

I have been searching for a job for almost 3 years now as Administrative Assistant. Many postings say must speak Spanish. To me it is also unfair. In fact, I had an Office Manager job for 4 years where I thought I was secure but they acquired another co. where the Office Manager spoke Spanish. Between us not getting along and because she was Spanish, I was let go. Could I have sued, no probably not since they need someone who spoke Spanish after all those years.REPORT COMMENTS

I have been actively applying for positions in healthcare for month. Many state bilingual (spanish) "preferred" but I apply anyway. I feel I am being discriminated against for only speaking English. It is ridiculous to only hire bilinguals to cater to individuals who have come to the U.S. Yet refuse to learn the language. It's irrational to expect to be catered to just because you chose to come live in the U.S. Make people learn to speak English. It's insane for well qualified candidates to be passed over because they only speak English. This is so frustrating that I am definitely considering relocating out of California and perhaps the U.S.REPORT COMMENTS

Why are we rewarding those who have come to our country illegally. We should not be required to speak two languages for the sake of criminals and last I checked that was a criminal offense. However, we reward them and our people suffer at their expense. CHANGE THIS!!! WE DEMAND IT!!!REPORT COMMENTS

So many Americans today are out of work, facing a unsteady job market, and applying for whatever work they can, even if it means starting over. With the amount of work available already scarce, adding a bilingual requirement whittles job positions down to almost nothing for majority of out of work citizens. It is cruel and unfair to those who are qualified in every other way, save for not speaking Spanish.REPORT COMMENTS

I have been proactively seeking employment for 6 months and have not had an interview yet. I am well educated with 10 years of Human Resources experience with some very reputable companies such as KPMG and USC School of Medicine. Due to the majority (95%) of job postings requiring candidates to speak Spanish and/or Mandrin I can not even apply or be considered for employment because I speak only English. The language spoken in the United State's of America is English where I was born a Citizen, I attended public school for 12 years and received my diploma. If a foreign language was going to be required for my livelihood and survival which is being able to obtain employment shouldn't I have been taught this foreign language as part of my education in this country? I am being discriminated against for being a English speaking U.S. citizen.REPORT COMMENTS
