I am 38 and from this country. it is growing increasingly necessary to know how to speak Spanish to get new employment and this is very alarming, disconcerting...and scary. I have no problem with America becoming bilingual but it cant happen overnight. we need to begin teaching children Spanish in schools if this is the goal but I shouldn't have to wake up and now find it hard to find a job because I don't speak Spanish and never had to. this is discrimination against English speakers in their own country.

I am a collage graduate and I have been applying every day for 2 years to get a job. Everything is requiring bilingual Spanish now when my profession is a skill trade, not a translator. I have managed in other jobs to communicate with my fellow Spanish speaking coworkers just fine through hand motions and essential basic Spanish words just fine with little to no issue. I do not beleive it's right to prevent me from having a opportunity to get a job I have paid to be educated in simply because I am not fluent in a non native language.

I have worked in social service programs such as IMPACT, Food Stamps, Medicaid, Head Start, Job Corps, Indiana State Employment Office for WIA program for past 18 yrs helping serve others in Indiana. I even was beneficial in helping the Hispanic Community to get jobs and lead them to resources. With an article written about my work in the Newspaper. I was laid off a year and half ago from the local DFR office, moved to Houston, TX to marry my Husband. I have been unable to get a job in expertise of field in Houston due to all the positions in my field and career of training are reporting BILINGUAL Required mainly due to the Hispanic population are the one's utilizing these resources most. I have been unemployed for past year and half and told in interviews your not who we are looking for we found someone more qualified when I know the young Hispanic Manager that interviewed me has less experience and training then I do as I am interviewing for same jobs I did in Indiana for years and was a Supervisor for some of those jobs. Thanks for applying I hear. I am tired of being discriminated against because I am not fluently Bilingual! Someone needs to change things in Congress Immediately because is is unfair and discriminatory. Jobs are hard enough to come by with unemployment rate so high but to not be able get a job just because I am not bilingual is just not right. Now I am being forced to either learn Spanish at almost 50yrs old, with what money to pay for it when I can't get a job??? I have to face, I need to get out of my career. A career I always had a passion for doing and very qualified to do. It saddens me everyday. I admit I did not see this existed in Indiana because not high Hispanic population there. I see it does exist here in Houston, TX as I am getting first hand experience with it over and over again by employers and they are getting away with it because you allow it to happen! Shame on you Gov't!

My work involves analyzing financial statements, most of which are in English. But employers are requiring Spanish speakers, merely to keep a purely latin workforce. It is illegal and discriminatory as no valid reason for the bilingual requirement exists.

My husband is a medically retired veteran and cannot find employment. We have three children and cannot afford clothes or CHRISTmas this year. His retirement is not enough to support our family. Every job he is qualified for says you must be bilingual. It breaks my heart to see his confidence continue to dwindle without employment. He feels useless without a job, leaving the Army was hard enough and now its worse. I am trying to figure out what made him so proud to fight for this country that is bending over backwards to support the people in every other country, but abandoning its own. I feel like there is no such thing as The United States anymore. I am all about the generosity this country offers to others, but at the expense of destroying its own people is kind of twisted. I feel discriminated against for my husband by potential employers. Now my husband is considering government contract work in Iraq and Afghanistan!!!!!!!!! Great job America, my husband has to leave his own country to get a job!!!!!!!

It has been incredibly difficult for me to get hired in the medical field due to not being bilingual. The Hispanic students in my training all have jobs. I paid for my education. Mostly, theirs were financially supported by our government. English is taught in our schools so why is it not being supported? I cannot find a Spanish class for the medical field anywhere! Now our President wants to provide amnesty. I am unemployed and worried...soon I will need food stamps. I am even applying for jobs outside my training and still the bilingual issue prevails. Very sad...feeling defeated by my country.

Yea, I'm a bit tired of being American, educated and can't find a job in my own community because I do not speak Spanish. I too have been trying to find a job for many years. In my area most hiring managers are predominantly Hispanic and hire one another. The way they circumvent discrimination is to bring you in for the interview process, however they have no intent in hiring you. Having a background in Human Resources, they can put Spanish or Bi-lingual "preferred" and use this verbiage. I've even seen ads saying, "Don't even apply if you do not speak Spanish". Wow really? I think there needs to be an investigation and federal laws need to change to protect those who do not, nor do they want to learn Spanish. Why is it necessary for everyone in an office to speak Spanish.. one person is good enough to transfer a call I'm finding this throughout California.

I live in Miami, FL and I am so fed up with employers always forcing U.S. citizens to require Spanish just to get a job. To me that is discrimination. I wish some of these politicians would have the guts to stand up for Americans for a change. Enough is enough!

I'm a register dental assistant in the state of CA and I have yet to find a job after receiving my license 2 years ago because I don't speak Spanish. I feel its discrimination and hinders job seekers because they want their offices to be all Spanish speaking when in reality all their patients aren't Spanish. This county is not looking at How this is effecting us and it needs to be a issue at hand NOW!

This isn't discrimination it's a requirement for a job that is driven by demand. If there wasn't a need for Spanish they wouldn't require it. While English has always been the majority language there was a time in the not so distant past where you would have heard a number of languages across the United States. Both my children speak English and Spanish fluently. I also taught myself as an adult despite the fact I didn't need to for my job. Instead of feeling sorry for myself I did something about it.

I work in Kissimmee Florida and it is predominantly a Spanish speaking area. I am in the health care field and feel that it should not be allowed to require a job applicant to be bilingual. I feel like this is America and our language is English that should be all that is required. Furthermore I get really frustrated when patients come in and can't speak any English and they are US citizens. I think we should start getting back our country before it becomes a completely Spanish speaking. And it's not just the Spanish it's any language. The US is too accommodating to other cultures but we are losing ours in the process. Make them learn English or go back to the country they call home still. I get do sick of hearing about "their" country, well shouldn't this be their country now otherwise why are they here.

I have never experienced the difficulty in getting a job until I moved to Los Angeles. Almost every job I have been interested in or that has been interested in me has slipped through my fingers because I didn't speak Spanish. This is extremely stressful because I moved here to be married and have a better life than in Chicago. Chicago doesn't look so bad anymore. At least I was always employed.

English speaking should be mandatory not any other language. Additional languages could be a plus but not necessary to obtain a job in which you have the skills and experience and well qualified for.

Being out of work now for 5 years after I left a position where the CEO was quite inappropriate with me has been extremely difficult, as it was the worst time to leave a position during the economic crisis, but I was not going to allow attempted hand holding nor the attempts at controlling my life. I live in a city that used to be prodominantly a good mix of races, but now I see the schools become full of non-English speaking races. I don't care to specify, which race because that is not my problem. My problem, is putting myself back in school and now that I am looking for a great position all I see are bilingual requirements. Excuse me?? I understand that you want someone that can help other coworkers, but I can't tell you how frustrating it is when I go into a store and ask for help and then they cannot even answer me because they do not speak English. Why are we not hiring people who speak English to begin with to then alleviate the need for bilingual administrative assistants, executive assistants, or HR employees? Why does my family have to go without because I speak the native language??? For those who move to any country to learn the native language, so the burden is not passed onto citizens of the country.

Regardless of Mexican workers presenting drivers license or ssn numbers most of them are fake and employers in Southern California rarely make an effort to investigate their validity. I have witnessed this at my workplace repeatedly. So now looking for a job I have to read bilingual required or bilingual a plus when filling out applications. What is going on in Los Angeles? I need to speak Spanish to work with illegals and provide customer service to illegals in Spanish?

Very frustrating when looking for work. I am a Mexican American, however, I am not bilingual. Why should I be required to speak another language in order to be employed. If people choose to reside and conduct business in America, they should be required to learn our language.
