I am an American with a Mexican background. I have always had a hard time finding employment because I am not bilingual. I get people say things like. Well you are Mexican aren't you? You should be ashamed of yourself! I get ridiculed and I get angry. I am an American I shouldn't have to speak another language to do a job if I am qualified. I was once hired to be a QC inspector in a warehouse. I informed the employer I was not bilingual, I was told it was fine all the paper work was in English. Another employee found out I wasn't bilingual reported it and I was let go before lunch. I was told they had an office job for me I called back a couple of times was given the run around. I'm sick and tired of this!

I have been locked out of many jobs that I am otherwise qualified for, just because I am not bilingual. I remember being bilingual on the job qualified you for a little more pay than others, now it is a requirement?

I have a degree and three certifications in the legal field and can't find even a receptionist's job. Add to that that my employer of nearly 10 years decided he was paying me too much money, as he did with many of his 50 year old employees, and "laid us off." So, racism and ageism. I still have 2 kids at home and living WAY below the poverty level. ENGLISH ONLY!!!

I'm an American damn it!! Someone needs to do something!!! I have a handicap child and am a single mother and can't find work!!! I'm very angry and refuse to speak that ugly language!!!

I recently graduated from a Medical Assisting program only to find out that I will be denied from every place I have applied to due to the fact I could not speak Spanish. I have went into several interviews only to be told if I was bilingual in Spanish I could have been hired on spot. it is upsetting that being an AMERICAN BORN CITIZEN is actually a bad thing now. I don't see how being bilingual required is not discrimination of its own.

I've been denied jobs I was qualified for because I could not speak Spanish. I've also been told by Mexican businesses that they don't hire white people, and go look, it's true.

After recently returning to Tampa Bay Florida, I find that many of the job descriptions require Spanish speaking or bilingual applicants. What now happens to us, the black, white, and other ethnic Americans who don't speak Spanish? Those of us who built and supported the companies now either forced through our government to satisfy the growing demand by non-English speaking legal or illegal people or businesses just wanting to fill their pockets by catering to the non-English speaking sector? Those of us who used the services of or bought from the companies that now won't hire us because we only speak the language of OUR country? I'm blown away and disappointed.

I've seen employees at work place speaking their native language (Spanish) in front of other non-Hispanic speakers- co workers. They are being rude, but nobody stopped them. It's direct consecutive result of hiring bilingual Spanish employees ( who very often don't have minimum English speaking skills). It is USA & official language is English! Not Spanish! It total discrimination of American born citizens.

I am so disgusted, my field has turned into an all spanish speaking position. Even if I were to try and learn another language, I couldn't do it in a timely fashion. I feel that my SKILL-SET is what should get me the job. This is discrimination at its finest.

I am a Licensed Masters level Social Worker and I love the work that I do. However, employment opportunities are limited because 90% of places are requiring that service providers be bilingual. What jobs are left for people who aren't bilingual? Most people don't even speak proper spanish and there are different dialects to the language. Rosetta Stone is not helping! I have all the required credentials and experience, but I'm barred from employment because I don't speak Spanish! Something needs to change!

Someone please tell me what is the difference between "bilingual only" and "White only" or "Black only". Obviously, against our laws to discriminate anyone based on ethnicity, race, gender or religion. People should learn English.

During my job search i have come across way too many job positions that state BILINGUAL ONLY (SPANISH). So i cant even apply to any of those jobs! I think its ridiculous that it has become a requirement for jobs that they hire Spanish speaking employees. I understand that there are a lot of Spanish speaking customers but one or two bilingual should be enough. Why do i see many store only looking for people who are bilingual or speak Spanish??? Its just ridiculous.

This is a slap in the face to born Americans..maybe if we stop paying taxes on all their bull crap. they will listen to us. Money talks!

I served in the military for five years and did two deployments to both theaters. I was honorably discharged and moved back to California to pursue a career in law enforcement. I knew the economy was tough so I decided to go to college in which I obtained a degree in criminal justice. I soon realized how tough the competition was for police officer jobs out here when approximately 3000 people applied for only 40 or so available positions. I know it takes a good chunk of time to complete the hiring process so after I graduated college I wanted/needed to find a job to pay the bills and food in my mouth, however I soon began to see something that I was appalled by. Spanish speaking or bilingual required for a great number of jobs. I have applied for countless jobs and have gotten nowhere. Along with being demoralized I soon began to realized this is discrimination mainly against the black and white community whose only fault is being able to only speak English. I have no harsh feelings for the Hispanic community and never will. I still want to be a great cop one day and be an asset to the community in whatever way I can. I have been unemployed for 2 years now and have to continue to go to school to get an income through the GI Bill even though I would rather have a job to gain some work experience, but I don't speak Spanish and cant learn the language over night. People may say well just learn Spanish but to become fluent at it would take years. When I stated I was a veteran with a college degree it wasn't to search for a handout but rather to address that when I got home and went above and beyond with higher education means nothing in California, what matters here is if you speak Spanish. This is discrimination at its worst and must be stopped.

Did America move? Did they do away with Equal Opportunity Employers? All I hear is there are jobs out there? Illegal immigrants are good for our economy, they just want better lives, they do jobs Americans won't do.. How about you try they do jobs that American Citizens aren't given a chance to do? I saw a help wanted sign on the door of a cell phone store and asked for an application. They immediately asked if I spoke Spanish and when I said no, they refused to even let me apply! This is in a low income/high unemployment/high crime town due to poverty, that the demographics are 40% white, 35% Black/African American, 24% Hispanic or Latino, not counting all of those here illegally. How can they discriminate against native, English speaking American Citizens, leaving 75% of the towns population with no job opportunity, in favor of a smaller Spanish speaking population? For anyone over the age of 13, foreign languages are not taught in school until you get to High School and even then, it's an elective and not all students are offered it nor do all schools. The majority of the families in this town who aren't Hispanic, are single parents. How is a child of a single parent or the parent themselves, with little to no income, going to learn a foreign language? And if they do have the opportunity to pay for a Spanish speaking class, are they going to put out that money rather than eat for a minimum wage job? This needs to stop!

I have no issue with people from other countries moving here. However, living in California, I feel there is discrimination when I apply for a job that I should be qualified for and realise that they only want someone who speaks Spanish and English. They won't even hire you if you speak French and English....The discrimination runs strong in the West.

I haven't been able to get a job that I'm well qualified for because speaking Spanish is "required". I'm sick of it. I've worked in the medical field for four years and now that I'm looking for a new job, I can't apply to over 50% of them because I only speak English.

The discrimination starts in our Public School System. When we teach English as a second language to Spanish speakers but do not teach Spanish as a second language to English Speakers. Our English Speaking only children are being left out of the job market because they only speak English. Spanish as a second language should be taught in our schools as soon as English as a second language is taught.
