While it is highly likely posting "bi-lingual" as a job requirement does not fit the legal definition of discrimination, it is often in effect discriminatory; frequently, it really means "bi-cultural" and the employer is seeking only non-white Hispanic applicants without being in violation of any laws while doing so. In the 1980s, Reagan gave amnesty to approximately 12 million illegal immigrants. The offspring from that number has greatly multiplied from this original population over the past 30 years. More than 20% of American residents are of Hispanic ethnicities. Like other humans, many of them discriminate against people not like themselves so if you live in a city with a large Hispanic population and you are not Hispanic, you will have an extremely difficult time getting a job, regardless of your qualifications. Many Hispanics are culturally tribal in disposition and this makes racism even worse. Generally speaking, if most Americans want to maintain a European-type culture overall, continuing to absorb Hispanic immigrants will erode fundamental European values that are not typically practiced or shared by people from Hispanic-dominated societies and it can take many generations for assimilation. This may have a negative impact on the host society. Note the ongoing challenges faced by European communities after many decades of absorbing immigrants from non-European regions.Mar 24th, 2016Someone from Tucson, AZ writes:
Unbelievable for employers in the Tucson area have the nerve to tell people they have to know Spanish. Just wow. Tucson will loose all it's workers soon. And I particularly do not care. Adios.REPORT COMMENTS

We live in America and should not be forced to learn a foreign language to work in our own country! I would learn whatever language of any country I lived in to learn the culture and fit in with that society. We need to quit catering to foreigners and force them to learn English to work here, not the other way around!REPORT COMMENTS

I literally can not get a job unless I know Spanish. I find it ridiculous that Hispanics emigrate to the U.S. and expect the residents to learn THEIR language. Above all else, employers rather hire someone who barely speaks English (or not at all) than the former. I have lost so many job opportunities because of the sole fact that employers just want Spanish speakers only. Having to speak Spanish is a discrimination!REPORT COMMENTS

People coming to this country should assimilate into this culture. My forebears learned English and worked hard when they came here. Other employees weren't required to learn their language. It is no wonder the unemployment rate is high amongst skilled workers now. My employer now pays the Spanish bilingual employees $250 extra a month. This is not fair. We who grew up in the US speaking our national language, which is English, should not be discriminated against in acquiring employment.REPORT COMMENTS

The State of California is constantly discriminating against.African descents. I think it's another form of racism and it's no equal opportunity out here for African descent .This is America with American jobs and it's not fair to deprive the opportunity due to language.REPORT COMMENTS

This is liberal inspired racism towards white anericans. It's also another reason Trump is so popular. How does a large 3rd world population come into a developed nation without invite and completely take over the culture and economy? Multicultural domestic terrorists encouraging this hostile takeover. It's the same thing happening in Europe.REPORT COMMENTS

I am a quailfied, competent, professional who finds it hard to gain employment due bilingual being a requirement for most jobs in my field. It is hurtful and makes me saddened that I cannot have a equal opportunity to excel and make a living in the country I was born in. Additionally, I have another barrier of being a minority female of African descent who comes from a history of people who were systemically discriminated against. Due to this country's social history, we always should be mindful of any active discrimination towards ALL of our citizens.Having a bilingual requirement for American jobs is discriminatory to all Americans and deprive them opportunity for dignity and self-respect by way of providing a living for themselves and their families.REPORT COMMENTS

I have lost so many opportunities due to the fact I'm not bilingual. If companies aren't allowed to discriminate based on other factors then why is it ok to discriminate against those who aren't bilingual. This is The United States of America. This isn't Mexico, Cuba or any other Spanish speaking country. English is our first language and Spanish should be a plus but not a requirement.REPORT COMMENTS

I am a professional in the medical field and I have found it difficult to find a job that I qualify for simply because I do not speak Spanish. I find it insulting and discriminatory. I embrace the fact that the US is a cultural accepting country after all my grandfather came here from Italy as an adult. I am very proud of my grandfather choosing to move to a foreign country as an adult and applaud him for learning the English language. I feel everyone like my grandfather should be required to learn to speak English but just as importantly continue to speak and teach their heirs their first language just like my grandfather did.REPORT COMMENTS

Affirmative Action took away 33% of the jobs I can get; being Bilingual especially in California took yet another 33% (on the low end) and added to that if you are over 60 years old your chance of getting a good paying job just reduced itself by another 33%. So as I see it I have a 1% chance of keeping my job until I retire or if forced to early retirement or at retirement my chance of getting any job other than a burger girl or a meet-n-greet person is slim to nothing. When did it become a requirement within the US to have to be bilingual to work at a job? If I travel abroad I have to learn the language to be able to move about, and If I moved there I would definately have to learn the language. Why has this been overlooked for so very long?REPORT COMMENTS

I am a US college graduate who worked in the service industry to put myself through college. On graduating I became the full-time caretaker of a dying parent. Four years later I tried re-entering the workforce. I couldn't even get a job in a hardware store because, although I am competent understanding Spanish, I am not fluent in the language. I cashed out my life insurance policy and returned to school for a master's degree, but as I graduated the very degree I'd just invested tens of thousands in became available online for a few thousand, devaluing the degree I'd earned. Not only have master's degrees become commonplace, but even with one, the few entry level posts that don't require years of experience require fluency in a foreign language. Very frustrating. I am not a xenophobe, but I find it insulting and demoralizing that even with two university STEM degrees, investment in professional resumes and cover letters, and years of glowing recommendations under my belt, in such a horrible general job market, that many of the non-professional jobs I could otherwise do are closed to me because English is my primary language. Some people remark that I--and others like me--are selfish and entitled. But this IS the USA, and many of us grow up speaking English. Now we're being penalized for not having foreign parents? That's unjust. The job market is atrocious enough as is. Stop the cultural discrimination against native English speakers in the USA. It's frankly policies like these (foreign language fluency requirement) that fuel more and more citizens' interests in Donald Trump as president.REPORT COMMENTS

I was a blue blood liberal when I first moved from the Northeast to California. Besides Southern California being the new Bible Belt which utterly disgusts me, at 45 and white, I can't get any calls on my resume at all. This has been going on since I tried to close my business that I started 6 yrs ago because each year I keep getting in debt deeper and deeper with the IRS. I don't even get any return calls. I feel such a deep discrimination when I consult with Mexican women. It's really bad here in Southern California. Though not all the ads say it, they are only responding to bilingual candidates. It truly was our blue blooded policies that did this to our country. Let me remind everyone of one thing. When my ancestors came over from Ellis Island in the early part of the century, immigrants like my relatives had to be sponsored and provide an occupation on how they intended to contribute to America. It was important for them to learn the language and guess what....they did! It worked well. Now, I immigrants coming over have zero obligation to do so. It's really sad what we've become as a country. Oh, and by the way, those with this "American Exceptionalism" that our government and other ignorant people in this country tout need to sit down. It's that type of mentality that challenges our national security. Would these same people spewing this type of rhetoric teach their kids to go to school and pronounce " I'm the best out of all of you." That's basically the msg we send to other countries. It's not surprising at all we are hated so. Oh, on a final note, Marco Rubio: this was NOT a country formed of Judao Christian belief. Do your research, America was a country formed to escape the religious persecution the English were facing during that era; hence separation of church and state.REPORT COMMENTS
