I put myself through college as a single mother. I have worked over 10 years in my field, however all careers I apply for or look to apply say directly in their listing 'must speak Spanish,' or 'bilingual required' I did not go to school to learn Spanish. So, my student loan debt is sitting, I am not 'qualified' because I do not speak Spanish fluently, and I have now been unemployed for the year since we have lived here. Very disheartening, since I do not live in Spain, but I live in Homestead. -

Back from 1995 until 2005 my last name was Martinez (by marriage) my career was a medical assistant, I was turned down by so many jobs due to the fact that I didn't speak Spanish, I even had a interviewer tell me that I have the experience their looking for but unfortunately I don't speak Spanish. I truly feel that the only reason I was called in for most of my interviews, was because my last name was Martinez. Why should I have to learn a foreign language when this countries language is English and I was born and raised here. Here's a thought... have the foreigner learn English !!REPORT COMMENTS

I am tired of seeing "Bilingual Preferred " on more than half of job postings I see on different websites. I commend those that have "Must speak and understand English "It is becoming very scary to see that Americans like myself born and raised in America, can't find work because we don't Speak English! It's insane. There is nothing wrong with having jobs for bilingual workers, but if Hard working American people can't find work and provide for their families in the place that they were born then something is terribly wrong. I am not for racism, but we really do need changes to make America as it should be. Abundant in opportunity for American people and English Speakers.REPORT COMMENTS

I am qualified but Hispanics get preference on jobs because of Spanish speaking. If we continually require spanish and only hire Hispanics, eventually English will be the second language and American born citizens the second class. Think about it...REPORT COMMENTS

With 2 masters degree in healthcare I am having trouble finding jobs in CA/ AZ and being discriminated for not speaking Spanish. I do speak 3 different languages besides English. That makes me Trilingual. But it is not enough unless you speak Spanish. Last I checked we were in the USA and English was official language. I do not have any trouble with people coming to this country but make sure they assimilate to our culture rather than we assimilating to them. From generation of immigrants, all have learn't to speak English and worked hard except Hispanics who expect us to learn Spanish and employers and Congress is pandering to them. Please make English the "official" language or be ready to loose USA.REPORT COMMENTS

I am an up and coming graduate and I recently decided to began looking into potential careers. It doesn't matter which field I research most of the entry level careers require or "prefer" applicants to be bilingual. I don't think its fair. I just spent the last 3 1/2 years of my life fighting for a degree and I wont even be able to put it to use. A few years ago everyone was upset because there were no jobs for graduates but now there is a surplus that cant be filled unless you are bilingual! Its discriminatory!REPORT COMMENTS

Under the EEOC one can not be discriminated against due to national origin. Here in America, English is the native tongue. No one is required to take a second language from kindergarten on. It is in direct violation to request Spanish language knowledge if that job can be accomplished without it. It is only profitable for companies not required.REPORT COMMENTS

This is a sad issue that is becoming more and more common in today's workforce. Many, many, many jobs are hiring hundreds of employees, but the organization posts signs that say " now hiring bilingual". Hey I understand that America is a land of opportunity, but where does the line get drawn to cater to everyone rather than catering to immigrants. Now I have no problem with immigrants who choose to become legal and live here legally. But I do have a problem when I can not get a good job because I am not bilingual. I am a military veteran, I served one tour of duty to Iraq, received an honorable discharge and started my B.S. in business. Only to realize that my B.S. in business is just that. Its freaking B.S. (********) when I am qualified for a particular position but I do not get it because I'm not bilingual. I grew up listening to people say that education is paramount. But educating yourself to speak spanish in the United States of America in order to get a good job...??? Ummm I think NOT!!!! when a person goes to live in a foreign country aren't you expected to learn the native language...??? Hell I've applied to home depot, Lowe's, Walmart, Racetrack, Quiktrip, Autozone, Metropcs, The City of Dallas to only have been told I'm not qualified enough. For goodness sakes nearly all positions I've applied for was a cashier... A high school student can operate a cashier position flawlessly, but a disabled military veteran with an honorable discharge, and 105 college credits can not. GIVE ME A BREAK!!!!!! America needs to wake up and provide an equal opportunity to all individuals/ citizen's. #notbilingualdeniedjobs....REPORT COMMENTS
