Saying it is preffered or a plus is the same thing as saying it is a requirement. Why not make it a requirement to speak Chinese, Japanese, Korean, German, Russian, Arabic, and the list goes on. I welcome other nationalities into the U.S., but not at the price of my lively hood. I served my country in the military, but now I'm unable to get a job, because I do not speak Spanish fluently. I cann not wait three years to fully learn a new language to put bread on my table. This is out of control. We have to take a stand for our rights in this country. Right not to be discriminated against because we do not speak another language other than what has been our native language for hundreds of years. If this was to be a requirement to get a job, maybe it should have been a requirment to learn Spanish while we were kids in school, but it was not. I have been more than qualified to do the work for the jobs I've applied for. What took me out of the running was the Spanish speaking requirement. What companies need to understand is that when you hire based on the Spanish speaking skill, you miss out on the employee who is better skilled at the job, and who can help make your company thrive. Lets give everyone an equal opportunity. I mean this is a part of our Bill of Rights.Jan 24th, 2016Someone from Fort Lauderdale, FL writes:
In today's job environment it's difficult to find a good job to begin with. When you add in the fact that companies now not only require experience, education and degrees, they also want you to be bilingual. If I were to be working in international relations I can understand, however if I am working strictly here in America it's ridiculous that I need to bend to the ways of immigrants who are not forced to learn OUR language and are too lazy or selffish to even try. The government is at fault for allowing these immigrants in without learning the language and the companies are at fault for their greed and ignorance. I should not be FORCED to learn the language of immigrants when they are fully capable of learning the main language of our country.REPORT COMMENTS

When my ancestors left their countries seeking a better life here in America, they conformed to the American ways. They LEARNED and spoke English. Four generations later, our roots, traditions, and native language was lost in our family. TODAY, we are being required to be bilingual in both English and Spanish in order to get a decent job here in Florida. Why are those who were born and raised in America are being discriminated against in the work force due to a foreign language? Why did our ancestors have to conform to the native ways of America but today's hispanic immigrants don't?REPORT COMMENTS

American Citizens should never be forced to learn Spanish or any language to get a job in the country they were born and raised. I have missed a lot of opportunities because I don't speak Spanish. This is America! This has to stop. This is discrimination against American born citizens!REPORT COMMENTS

Good luck getting a decent job (or any job) in Southern California without being bilingual. Hell, I'd learn- but none of my friends or family speak Spanish so how would I practice it and how long would it take me? I need a job NOW. Not a handout, a flipping job. When I hear people say they are proud to be American... I just don't feel that way anymore. This was a good country a long time ago, but for decades America has been transformed by minorities for better or worse, and to still call them minorities is silly. Anywhere I go in Orange County the Spanish-speaking people are all I see. Even the freeway Billboards are in Spanish. What is a native born, educated, capable, English-speaking person left to do besides flee to states with less "ethnic diversity?"REPORT COMMENTS

I think this is a case of good intention gone bad. Today I see large groups of the same type of people working in a position or group of positions that can be diverse and when I see that it is Spanish speaker, it leads right back to the hiring manager being a Spanish speaker. The interesting thing is, will there be government demanded Spanish as a Second language classes offered.REPORT COMMENTS

I don't have any problems with immigrants. I'm just a hard-working college graduate trying to get into the healthcare field but being stymied by the bilingual requirement. I understand the need, but English should be encouraged more often instead of promoting favoritism towards one culture.REPORT COMMENTS

Definitely a problem. Bilingual should include more than Spanish, shouldn't be a requirement except in limited job positions, and if you can't understand American English, get your own translator. If I permanently move to Japan, I will strive to learn Japanese and pay a translator til I am fluent.REPORT COMMENTS

Wow, today for the first time in our lives we were the victims of reverse discrimination here in FL. English speaking American workers are being denied jobs in FL, TX, CA, AZ, CO and all over as immigrants and "illegals" who are bilingual (really bad English but they speak Spanish) take away jobs. It's the silent form of job discrimination no one knows about or talks about. We need to take our country back and protect our native language which was still English last time I checked!REPORT COMMENTS

Illegal Immigration needs to stop. Jobs are being handed to the Spanish Speaking before the US Citizens and almost the Military. It is ridiculous, that we can't get a job because we have to speak Spanish. I say when are the Spanish going to start speaking Arabic. That the next big culture that has overgrown the USA. The whole start of North America was on the basis of speaking English otherwise we would of had to of learn the Indian Language, Norwegian, Italian, and the others who came to America First. Government never made that a requirement. English is the only way.REPORT COMMENTS
