I live in a border town, and every job that is hiring requires me to speak Spanish for the position. And since I don't, I cant get a job. Its not right and its discrimination at its finest. -

I echo everything that was said prior. It is extremely discriminatory to make it a requirement to be bilingual for some positions. I am currently having a difficult time finding work because of this.REPORT COMMENTS

The question is: is there a requirement for the President of the United States let alone any member of Congress or politician to be bilingual in the language of the cities/states they represent? IfĀ there was how would they feel? LEADERS SHOULD LEAD BY EXAMPLE!REPORT COMMENTS

I have been unable to obtain a promotion in a New York City school system since 2010 due to the fact that I am not bilingual in the preferred languages they require guidance counselors to speak. If this were the case then why was I admitted to a City University of New York where I obtained a 48 credit Masters Degree with a 3.8 gpa only to be told that there are no job positions available for me? If I am working in a SCHOOL system where the majority of the students speak ENGLISH and are taught in ENGLISH then why should I be required to speak another language in America? I still have to pay back my student loans and have to watch people who have came here from another country receive a promotion over me simply because of the fact that they are bilingual. I feel that this is discriminatory toward the people who have been born in America and have worked hard to earn their degrees only to be told that they will have to work in a lower level/paying job due to their legal citizenship. What ever happened to people being promoted based on their merits and not their nationality?REPORT COMMENTS

It is very prevalent here in California the discrimination upon non Hispanic residents. It is very frustrating to apply and interview a job where you are sometimes OVERQUALIFIED and still have to speak Spanish or Korean or whatever that staff's language based on their ethnicity IN AMERICA! If this was to be the outcome in a Legal citizens job efforts to be bilingual then the bilingual languages should be started in grade school! Mandatory. This whole land speaks ENGLISH as a first language not other. It is discriminatory and disrespectful to the US citizens. If you have to speak Spanish just to get a job where does that leave the millions of workers or potential workers who do not speak Spanish? This immigration BS is getting way out of hand.REPORT COMMENTS

I agree one hundred percent. Being bilingual should have never been ok to ask someone to do just to get a job. This is America.REPORT COMMENTS

I have been working as a temp on the same assignment for 7 years now, the agency i am assigned to only has openings that require someone to be bilingual in english/spanish. I am not bilingual and yet i keep getting to come back to this assignment. there are plenty of spanish speakers in the office, i dont see why i am not hired, though it seems to be because i only speak english. I have worked here all that time with no medical benefits, no vacation pay, no sick pay (until this year because it is required by law) and obviously i am valued since i get brought back each season. the agency currently has an opening for my work duties but is again recruiting only bilingual.REPORT COMMENTS

Today, I was sent an email regarding an application I sent in for a health educator position stating they were very interested in my experiences as a registered dietitian with my MPH and requested I fill out further paperwork. Shortly after I was emailed asking if I was bilingual and if not, they would look elsewhere for candidates as this was required. Unfortunate for them.REPORT COMMENTS

requiring people be bi lingual is in effect discriminatory. such in places as south Florida has made it nearly impossible for anyone who is not Latino to obtain employment. this is patently unfair.REPORT COMMENTS

I have been working at jobs that have Spanish speaking employees and I adapted. I am not fluent but I have a working understanding of the language. Now, after looking for employment for the last 6 months I am being told I need to be fluent. Why do I have to be fluent if all paperwork and labeling for the companies are in English. Discrimination is blatant and I need to find a way to out these people because it is wrong. More than 20 years in the industry and because I don't speak Spanish I can't find another job!REPORT COMMENTS

Why should people who only speak Spanish learn English when the almighty dollar will cater to them so they NEVER have to learn it? This country has its priorities so screwed up & doesn't give a damn about its citizens.REPORT COMMENTS

I've been looking for a job for almost 2 years now. I have 5 years experience doing patient registration and can't fnd a job. Most of the jobs are asking applicants to be bilingual in spanish. I was so desparate to find something, that I started searching for a job in housekeeping. I was very discourage when I saw a job at some of the hosptials saying, spanish speaking highly preferred. Since when does one need to speak spanish to clean toilets? Especially in a area that's mostly african american!!!REPORT COMMENTS

It's ridiculous as someone who has over 25 years experience as an Administrative Assistant/office manager cannot find a job because I do not speak Spanish. If you bother to look through ads a majority of postings are MUST SPEAK SPANISH.REPORT COMMENTS

My best friend's father escaped East Germany by hiding underneath a train when he was 17 years old. He spoke German and French, but not English. He wanted to be an American, but because he didn't speak English he moved to Montreal where he could live close to his goal and work in a place where he could communicate in French while learning English. Once he attained fluency in English he moved to the United States of America where he was proud to become a citizen and join the US Navy where he served as a "Sea-Bee" in a construction battalion where he worked to fortify the perimeter of Gitmo during the Cuban missile crisis. After leaving the Navy he built tanks at General Dynamics and raised two sons. One became a US Marine and the other got a M.S. degree in Education and became a teacher. He is proud to be an American, proud to speak English and believes that English is the language of the United States and French is the language of diplomacy. He believes that Spanish is okay spoken at home, but that English is the language of the workplace. That is the America in which he wanted to live and the America for which he was willing to fight.REPORT COMMENTS
