There is a prevalence in our country that seems illegal - in an effort to increase business in multi-cultural demographics - are "preferring" bilingual speakers. This is affecting many, many licensed healthcare professionals as well as other consumer jobs that pay little to begin with. I think there should be a large class action lawsuit against this. -

I read a job announcement and see that I meet the qualifications, then every single time, year after endless year, I go to the site to apply and suddenly there's an additional qualification in bold letters reading "bilingual in Spanish and English required" or it might say "preferred." I'm seeking clerical job opportunities in non-profit and government health care facilities in Houston, TX, in areas that are not even predominately Spanish speaking. How does speaking only English make me not qualified for clerical work with English printed forms? It is a devastation the way bilingual is constantly being made a skill requirement when speaking it isn't even relevant to the area of work. It's like people who only speak English are being excluded just for the heck of it.REPORT COMMENTS

I'm tired of this problem as well. I am a person of mixed race. And have close friends of different backgrounds and often speak out on other discrimination that does'nt effect me personally but because I feel it's wrong. But I've been turned down on many jobs because I do not speak Spanish and I'm tired of the political world not talking about it. It's a huge problem. Yes we welcome everyone and I love and respect all cultures. But if you're gonna be American then you need to learn the language. I shouldn't be discriminated against to provide for my family and self because I speak only English while being born in the US and still living in the US. It's just not right! We're talking about outsourcing jobs isn't right. But discrimination against US citizens for speaking our native tongue,... Isn't that the same problem? It's infuriating!!!!REPORT COMMENTS

I have been job searching for months on end. I have family I need to provide for, but I keep getting declined because I DO NOT speak Spanish! You don't see me going to France, and getting mad that no one knows English. I am never going to find a job because I do not know Spanish. Why do we have to please the needs of Mexicans that don't know English? That came to America, and expect us to give them everything. I am not racist, I am a Mexican expected to know Spanish.REPORT COMMENTS

I am native born American, my family only spoke English, I have taken Spanish in High school but it is not office Spanish or Medical Spanish, now days you are at the back of the line getting your resume viewed or you might as well forget it, when they require Must speak Spanish for the only jobs available. We are being discriminated against in our own country. This is reversed discrimination.REPORT COMMENTS

I am a former army infantryman, who's served my Country honorably. I'm not a racist of any kind, but this has to come to an end. I live in Deep South Texas and am well qualified for all the jobs I apply for and believe me, I've applied for a lot in this area without even a call back or an interview because of the soul reason that I don't speak proficient Spanish. It's a sad day in this country when a veteran can't get a job in his own state because immigrants take precedence. Someone needs to take this matter straight to the governors office!... Who's with me???!?REPORT COMMENTS

I've just graduated highschool and am trying to get a job so i can help support my bed ridden mother and my two younger brothers. And it's so moronically frustrating that I can't get any of the dozens of entry level jobs I've applied for solely because I'm not billengual. I've looked up language discrimination laws, and they are catered to non English speakers. If you don't see the issue with this, then you are part of the problem. Spanish should not be a damn necessity. English is the first language in this country, we don't have dual languages.REPORT COMMENTS

Just another reason why immigration needs to be reigned in a bit. Not saying I wouldn't love to learn Spanish or that they shouldn't be here but I will never forget taking a trip to Mexico and having to switch plans and I was a little lost because everything was in Spanish of course. The thing that threw me was not ONE single person in this airport spoke English! It's in airport, surely they are used to tourists I assumed but nope, I almost missed my flight because no one in uniform knew what the heck I was saying. It definitely feels like a slap in the face.REPORT COMMENTS

Well folks, here in Tucson, The company that I work for has an entire assembly floor of Spanish Only speakers. The meetings are in Spanish. I am the only Native English speaker in my department. I have cried at work, I often feel like I am not a part of the team, the supervisor (from Argentina) does not communicate with me. No one helps me, they help each other. It is a very ostracizing, depressing place for me. The people are not mean to me, but I can not understand what is being said. This is all day for 10 hours per day 4 days per week. Often times, I will put in ear plugs to fade out the "babbling". I find myself wondering, how could they be here for 20 years and not know English, conversationally? Are they legal? Are they working under someone else's social? Should I contact ICE? While learning a second language would be nice, I should not be forced to in order to get or maintain a job. THIS IS DEFINITELY A FORM OF DISCRIMINATION. Unless you are dealing with international business, or a translator-in America, no other language other than English should even be mentioned. I am looking for another job. Good luck to everyone.REPORT COMMENTS

Do you want to be hired? You`d better create your own company and decide who are the best workers for the posts instead criticise other companies that live in the real world and seek their best opportunities and demand people with the best assets. Companies wish to broaden their markets. In the rest of the world speaking other languages is a plus to get a better job and get better incomes. In Europe bilingual education is being promoted. A lot of countries have many languages and people are bilingual. You want to live in the far west breeding cattle? Wake up!! The world is changing!!REPORT COMMENTS
