I have been trying to get a job in Texas for the past nine months. i have been past over numerous times because I do not speak Spanish! I shouldn't have to be able to speak Spanish, THEY need to learn how to speak English! I am fed up with the whole situation! I have lived in Texas 50 years and can not get a job because of the over population of Mexicans! I have had it! The white female is now the minority!! That is a shame!!!! SMH!

The spelling and grammar on this petition is a little strange... Anyway, yes. It is true. Spanish is a requirement for most of the jobs in my city. It is difficult to find a job when you can only speak the official language in the United States. Spanish is a must and you will not be considered for a position...even if you are studying the preferred language. It is a shame, really. It is obviously discrimination. Sadly, not many people will see it that way since it suits them and they can bring up the fact that people in EUROPEAN countries are bilingual. Not many people can just learn Spanish for a job. More than likely you learned it as a child or you married into a family where Spanish is the only language to speak in the house. That is unfair since not everyone learned Spanish as a child. Spanish as a requirement is clearly asking for applicants who are of a certain race/ethnicity. It is discrimination and it must be stopped.

I have been looking into several job opportunities in the San Antonio, TX area and almost all of the requirements include 'must be bilingual in Spanish' or 'Spanish preferred'. The positions I am applying for are not "interpreter" or "translator" jobs. I can't believe that ALL American's are being discriminated against because we are not fluent in a language that is NOT our mother tongue. That's like saying a Mexican must speak English to work in THEIR country.

I am a 24 year old recent grad. I find that it is very difficult to find work especially here in Houston, because I do not fluently speak Spanish. Even for simple jobs like serving and management at local fast food restaurants. It's unfair. When you go to other countries it is a sign of respect to attempt to learn thier culture and to speak their language. In some countries they will ignore you if u dont. Yet I was born here and I am forced to cater to someone else's culture to make a living. I feel this is not just specific to Spanish either. Mandarin, French, Arabic.. The only required language should be English. Unless you are in international business or translation.

15 years ago, potential employees in manufacturing had to take test, which required English. Soon, California will be a Spanish-speaking state. I live in California, I love it here, but I have started looking for jobs in the Midwest and on the East coast.

I do live on a border town so about 75% of jobs that are not food industry related require you to speak Spanish. It's becoming more and more difficult to look for a better job without any Spanish speaking background.

I really do believe this "bilingual preferred" nonsense need to stop. I do know Spanish, but was recently turned down BY MY OWN FORMER EMPLOYER for reemployment for a part time second job simply because they were looking for a bilingual person to hire. And, shortly I resigned few years ago from this company, a manager informed me that I can always return (a false promise to add to the complaint). This is another excuse for reverse discrimination and I will be seeking grass root organizations dealing with bilingualism as reverse discrimination.

Tired of hearing that our Spanish speaking neighbors are only taking jobs that people don't want. I am a skilled worker in my field and I can't get a job because I don't speak Spanish This is not only in migrant work it is in public offices and businesses. I understand that they are here and there is a need for it. But now legal citizens can't get jobs. I have even made the effort to try to learn and still am I have taught there children to read in english but now my children and myself are suffering. I have worked in HR for schools in CA and people are being discriminated they will hire someone less qualified or not even qualified for a position only because they speak Spanish.. So all that money you spent on your education will not get you a job here in the schools and if you loose your job in the public system because of layoffs or other reasons good luck getting another one if you don't speak Spanish. Your tax dollars in the schools are going for unexperienced employees we have high turnover of employees and they are not experienced in other areas to deal with learning issues or learning in general. That is one of the problems going on in the Public Schools in California. I understand why they come here but it is not fair to citizens and other from other countries who come in legally and learn the language just like we would have to if we went to live in there Country.

Social workers in New York City who do not speak Spanish are closed out of most positions otherwise open to LMSW's. The reverse discrimination is multiplied by a deafening silence to maintain political correctness, i.e., protect the Spanish speaking so called 'minority'. Social work faculties and associations offer no warning to MSW candidates; no Spanish language training is required or offered in social work schools. Taboo rules a raging injustice. Respectfully, Ms. Vivian Gelberman 884 West End 61 New York, NY 10025

I have nothing personal against a Bilingual or Dual Language speaker as long as it is a certified Bilingual not someone that can barely speak English, but has a excellent command of the Spanish language, but there does not have to be an entire office full of Bilingual Spanish speaking workers. My other issue is that All I see working at All the clinics front desk reception are Latino Hispanic Chicano Mexican and some of these ladies need to check there ATTITUDES because I have personally experienced some smartypants and Superiority complex types. I would like to see at least one African American, one Asian and one Caucasian working along with these Latinos because I do understand they need to have someone working front who can communicate with the people who dont speak English even after living in the USA for over 50 years.

I took a English - case workers exam ( there was one for Spanish speakers as well) for a city in NY .. In the interview one of the caseworkers asked did I speak Spanish .. And shook her head in dismay when I said No. I placed 2nd for that test and did not get the job because I didn't speak Spanish ? I have a degree , I'm a citizen , and I lived in the community and wanted to serve here , and placed very high on the test .. But since I didn't speak Spanish I was not offered the job. Discrimination at its best !

I live in Houston, Texas and this is a BIG problem! I know someone personally who was hired as the office manager in a medical office. She had already given her notice to her present employer when she was called and told that they had decided to hire someone else who was bilingual. This is wrong, wrong, wrong and it is happening on a regular basis across the state of Texas. What has happened to English as the language of the United States?
