I AM SICK OF TIRED, SINCE 1986, THAT I HAVE TO LEARN SPANISH TO GET A JOB IN THESE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA!! I WAS BORN HER, MY PARENTS WERE BORN HERE, MY CHILDREN WERE BORN HERE, AND WHEN MY PARENTS' PARENTS CAME INTO THIS COUNTRY, VIA ELLIS ISLAND, THEY ALSO SPOKE ENGLISH TO GET JOBS. THEY HAD TO KNOW ENGLISH; AND AREN'T IMMIGRANTS SUPPOSED TO KNOW ENGLISH WHEN THEY BECOME CITIZENS?? ONCE AGAIN, MY SON, AT AGE 35, WAS TURNED DOWN FOR '''POTENTIAL''' JOB, NOT BECAUSE HE DIDN'T HAVE THE DEGREE, SKILLS, OR CERTIFICATION, HE WAS TURNED DOWN A JOB BECAUSE HE IS NOT BI LINGUAL.!!! OMG.. THE COMPANY CLAIMS TO BE """"EQUAL OPPORTUNITY!!"""" HOW CAN THEY BE EQUAL OPPORTUNITY IF THEY TELL POTENTIAL EMPLOYEES, AKA, JOB SEEKERS, THAT THEY MUST HAVE FULL KNOWLEDGE OF A LANGUAGE DIFFERENT FROM THE ''AMERICAN ENGLISH?'''' AND YA'LL KNOW: WE AMERICANS DO NOT SPEAK TRUE ENGLISH, IT'S CALLED, 'AMERICAN ENGLISH.'

I live in Texas and have been unemployed for 2 years (since graduating from college). I look at job postings and most of them require candidates to be bilingual in Spanish. This is discrimination.

My daughter lives in WPB, FL and works in the clerical field and she's being locked out if jobs because she's not bilingual. Born and raised in the USA Spanish is not required. How can this happen? Why can't they learn to speak English? It is so unfair and is discrimination in the highest form. I will not stop fighting this cause. Something has to give.

I have had to pass over many job postings where my skills were above and beyond the expectations for the job, simply because I am not bi-lingual. This is job discrimination. I have lived in this country my entire life and never thought I would be discriminated against because of that.

I just called Cory Gardner's office in Denver and guy answering the phone thought my concern was funny, said they don't get in the habit of telling business what to do (regulations and other laws I guess is above his pay grade) and look for a job that didn't require Spanish, it was really demeaning the treatment I got form him. I'll be sure to not ever vote for another politician that thinks this is not important.

Further, many of the positions that require bilingual language are entry level positions such as receptionist, food stamp worker, etc. These were once jobs that US citizens could get upon graduation from high school. Now these jobs favor 1st generation children of immigrants who grew up in bi-lingual households. No job other than interpretor or translator (or a posting in a foreign country) should require that a US citizen be excluded for only speaking English.

The opportunities are narrow for those of us who were born in the U.S. and taught English as our primary language during school. I feel that it is discrimination that employers advertising Jobs that do not require public contact are also stating bi-lingual preferred or required. In California, Spanish is the required language. It is not fair to those of us who speak English only to be denied gainful employment.

Every single job I have looked into applying it is bilingual. Also when shopping at my local $.99 store I'm lucky if that to run into somebody who speaks the English language. These are issues that I'd like to see addressed if I have to learn a second language I should be paid extra i.e. a dollar or more!

I work for a telephone company. Fortunately it's a union job. Speaking Spanish as a second language is not a requirement. However it is very much necessary in the areas that I work in Oxnard California. There is only 10% of my work crew that speaks Spanish as a second language. I inquired about being paid a premium for having the additional skill. The response from the company and my union was that there is no premium for speaking Spanish as a second language. However, the company chooses to deploy me in areas that are predominantly Spanish-speaking.

I am a veteran with a BS in Business and 6 master certifications in different areas. I also have several years of experience. I have applied for countless positions as have people i know personally. These people who have applied for the same accounting positions or sales management positions as i have, have no experience or education past high school. They have been hired, and i have yet to be offered an interview. I have been told they found more qualified applicants. These people were all Hispanic. Once they were hired over me knowing my background they agreed that bias is the reason i do not have a job. I understand that Obama is offering companies $3000.00 to hire illegals over Americans, and fining companies who hire Americans instead of illegals. The only reason people speak Spanish is because they hate America and love their heritage, but also love the monetary assistance they receive from Obama, and his minions. Our government allows Spanish to be spoken, and they go so far as to create advertisement and drivers tests, voting ballots etc in Spanish. If they are going to cater to the Hispanic population, they they should cater to the other 6500 languages spoken, otherwise it is bias towards those who do not speak English or Spanish. They should be subject to law suits claiming discrimination. English only spoken in America, or get out.

Miami needs serious economic reform. Not only has income not grown with inflation or cost of living but many natives such as myself are unqualified for work due to not being bilingual (creole but mostly spanish requirements). I have been to businesses where employees cannot properly serve customers due to lack of english, even Uber drivers! This needs to change or I definitely will plan to relocate in a year's time.

Allowing anyone to come here and live on our tax dollars and take our jobs simply because they speak a language that I do not after being born and educated in this country is a HUGE disservice to your citizens.

I agree that one's ability to communicate bilingually should not be a job requirement nor a preference. Bilingual is not a skill or talent, especially if it is a second language taught at home by one's family. This is a disadvantage to those who qualify for positions but are overlooked due to their inability to speak another language. I am passionate about this issue because I am one who have personally been overlooked for a permanent position that I've occupied as a temp for several months without any complaints. Until the moment I applied for the permanent position a month ago, I was a coined "a good social worker" by my supervisor, colleagues and patients. However, only to be told at the end that I was fired due to absenteeism. When in actuality several of my now former co-workers informed me that my bilingual supervisor preferred a bilingual person to fill the permanent position rather than me. In which she proceeded to hire a bilingual person, while planning my termination. You would think that after all of the contributions I've made to that company she would have at least had the decency to fire me to my face, she had my agency call me after I left work to notify me that my "assignment had ended". I called the agency all day the next day to fine out why I was let go, as the third party messenger was not privileged to my records. Never heard from nor was able to reach my agency coordinator. But her supervisor was the one to notify that the employer stated that it was due to absenteeism. Which is untrue because each day that I was out of the office advanced notice was always presented to my supervisor I have the records to prove it. The whole time I was employed, I had never been written up or given any verbal warning of any sort regarding absenteeism or anything else. So hear I am with out a job, and unsure of how I will be able to pay my rent because my former supervisor lied on me to inherit a bilingual employee. The act of absenteeism is considered to be a means of misconduct, as per the NYS department of labor laws. Which disqualifies one from receiving unemployment insurance. What hurt the most is not only did she let me go because of my inability to speak spanish, but she also discriminated against my religion by docking me as well as other Christians for times that she learned that I had been praying at work. And now she made it impossible for me to collect unemployment insurance while out of work.

Please - do we have people for Japanese, Chinese, German, Iranian, Swedish, French speakers in all businesses? Do we supply forms in all languages for all people that live in the US of A? I think the answer is NO. So honestly - what makes Hispanic people special? Everyone that comes to the US has the same advantages and disadvantages if they do not speak English. Why are we bending over backward for Hispanic speakers? We are making everyone else learn the language to be here? I would definitely like someone explain why we are doing this. If we went to Mexico - please - no one and I mean no one - would help English speakers there - SO WHY ARE WE HELPING ONLY HISPANIC PEOPLE HERE??????? It looks to me like they are trying to take back the land we took from them in NM, Arizona, Texas - and that is why we are bending over backward to what appease them? I would definitely like someone to fix this problem because I do not want to learn Spanish, don't like the sound of the language and feel it's disrespectful of employers to require it - of course if it is Hispanic controlled - THERE'S YOUR SIGN.....

I would like to see attorneys take on discrimination lawsuits against companies that require a foreign language - when the requirement to speak a foreign language is in writing on a job posting, that is sufficient proof of discrimination. As Bobby Jindal so accurately stated "Immigration Without Assimilation Is an Invasion" Americans welcome LEGAL immigrants - but assimilate by learning and speaking the language.

It should be illegal to have such poor English skills and claim to be fluent in English. Whoever wrote this; Being Bilingual in Spanish a discrimination against job seekers, should not claim to be fluent in English either. I hear all these people claim to be experienced and qualified. Well guess what? You are not the only one that meets those MINIMUM qualifications! Now your counterpart that also knows Spanish, in a Spanish Preferred job postings, just became more qualified. At the end of the day it comes down to money! If the customers being served need someone to speak their language, whether that be Spanish or anything other than English that will be a requirement.

One of the requirements when someone gets the green card should be a law that they MUST take classes to prove they can go into the work force and SPEAK, WRITE & READ ENGLISH, this can solve the problem plain and simple learn ENGLISH! Not the other way around that we as Americans have to speak Spanish. I've been seeking employment for 2 years and I worked for 35 years of my life even the salaries are going backwards they are giving salaries that I made in 1987. This is a VERY BIG problem for Americans this has to be the hardest task I've ever had to deal with!! PLEASE PLEASE I beg you to STOP this!!

I completely agree. All the jobs here in Orlando say Spanish preferred, some even say Spanish speaking candidates, which is Flippin discrimination! Career Builder got a nasty email from me on that one! It is rumored here that employers are getting "kickbacks" for hiring latinos- good old affirmative action at work here. I have graduated with my associates 4 1/2 years ago and cannot get work. I am ready to leave this state and I have been here 24 years! Something needs to be done about this, I am not the only one having trouble there are many here facing the same problem. Have anything to do with Liberals in office? I believe so.

Recently moved to El Paso TX, where I interviewed for a position I was definitely qualified for and was told so by the interviewer. When I advised I did not speak Spanish I was told this was fine and that I would be contacted for an interview with the attorney by Friday. Never received a call back even though it was a "sure thing" and later found the actual posting for the job which said "Spanish Preferred". So many other jobs I don't even apply to since they state either Spanish Preferred or Mandatory and I am just tired of getting no responses. I am a legal secretary from Phila., where I worked in the field for 5 years. Given my experience and the backing of my former employer I would have thought this would be easy. Yet here I sit getting so annoyed because although I live in America, I'm basically being told I need to cater to people who come here and do not want to learn our nations language. Its sick. I have foreign family, as well as my husband, who came to this country and learned English. Why should it be different for Spanish speakers? A friend I recently met was told to get Rosetta stone to learn Spanish by her job.

This is America, everyone should be speaking English! I am not from America, I'm from Asia, yet I don't use my bilingual skill as an advantage. English should be the only language that Americans speak, if not, you should not be here. Not being bilingual in Spanish here Southern California decreases your chance of landing a job by 50-60%, and that's not fair! How do you suppose to find a job in a city of which more than half of the population is Hispanic/ Latino.

Have been unable to apply or denied so many positions because I don't speak Spanish, how can this be? it's almost like saying they're looking for a specific ethnicity because majority of non-Latin Americans don't speak spanish.

Please help the Amercian worker. A lot of us are educated, BA, Masters and are having doors slammed in our faces because WE, American citizens, don't speak Spanish! I have nothing against immigration as I am the first American child of parents coming from the Caribbean, but this is just ridiculous. I even have nothing against us learning Spanish, but you need to start teaching it in elementary NOW! We can't just wake up one day and jobs are only going to the Spanish speaking.

    It's unfair and blatant discrimination.
