We had $100 taken out of our paycheck every month for the first year of service when I joined the USN in 91. That was a large amount taken out considering what we were getting paid. I believe that Congress should do the right thing and allow veterans to use their unused/expired benefits to benefit the US. We volunteer to server our country no matter the risks involved. Everyone must write your respective congressional representative and let them know. If we don't, they won't.Jun 19th, 2014Someone from Miami Beach, FL writes:
Due to life circumstances, I was never able to use the loan repayment program or my educational benefits before they expired. Servicemembers sign those contracts for a determined amount of years, , sometimes even re-enlisiting. The only stipulations or guarantees given in those contracts and/or all the paperwork they sign, are what is in writing. If a servicemember is blessed enough to complete their honorable term of service, they should be guaranteed and granted all the advantages of the GI Bill and any educational benefits due them without an expiration date. After all, there was no guarantee of their return, in which event the benefits would not have been paid. Let's take care of our veterans!REPORT COMMENTS

10 yr expiration seems an arbitrary and somewhat chintzy way to minimize the actual USE of this benefit. Others: VA Home Loan for those who never buy...the Promise of Healthcare was hollow...How about throwing us a bone here for EDUCATION which benefits not only the individual, but Society as a whole.REPORT COMMENTS

please let's keep this bill simple the extension and use of GI benefits by any veteran until the benefits are exhausted. simple situations that happen in life sometimes prohibitive veterans from using is benefits within the 10-year limitation. sometimes that exception is merely the fact that there are no classes available in the area, or " life happens" situations. If you earned it, why is someone able to arbitrarily set a time limit on when he or she uses that benefit? We served when called. We can use your help now. Thanks. SFC. Kallsen, US Army (ret)REPORT COMMENTS

The injury that left me with a disability will never expire... neither should the GI Bill. I paid for it - I fought for it.REPORT COMMENTS

Right after I left the service I went to school. I did two semesters, and at the beginning of my third semester I was dropped from my classes because the VA at the school dropped the ball. I was in hard times and had to get a job immediately. That job ended up being a fairly ok career. I am wanting to return to school once I move into a higher position at my job, but im about to lose my benefits. I'll be up for retirement at 41 years of age and would like to pursue something better.REPORT COMMENTS

Juggling work and children with disabilities prevented the time necessary to complete my degree. It's been 18 years and I am now in position to return to school. I urge our Congressional Leaders to issue into law a new bill that would authorize "no cap" timeframe limitation to use GI Bill educational benefits.REPORT COMMENTS
