I pay child support and am not in arrears. My oldest child is married, yet I am still paying. She is 23. My 21 year old goes to school online, so Im told and I pay support for her as well. My ex does not work and has convincingly led the courts to believe that this is just. This is happening in th state of Alabama. The child support laws should NEVER ask for more money than the parent is earning. I think it should be a percentage of what both parents are earning. Regardless of who the children live with. Children need both parents involved in their lives; the only reason not to have both is if there is an abusive or harmful situation. I also think that the money being paid by the parent should be given to the children!! Child support requires the father of a friend of mine to pay $600 every month and the mother is only receiving $400 a month! Really! People need to stand up for their constitutional rights and stop being bullied by our government.REPORT COMMENTS

I must be the worst father in the world? I was their, for the 9 months before she was born, till the second year after. All the way up to when she never came home. When the mother tool off to Florida and abandoned our child and her olderest daughter with me, I hired a lawyer, and we filed for action in the superior court. I wanted full custody of my daughter, and would have loved to have her oldest as well. When she did come back, she had no place to live. I had a home with power on, a nice car, money in the bank, food in the fridge, and clothes in their closets. She had nothing, stayed with a friend of mine, and asked if over the weekend she could have both to visit and that she would return them Sunday night so the oldest could go to daycare. My friend called me up after they never showed up Sunday night, or even to daycare monday morning and said that she signed her daughter's off with a notarized letter to her own mother. I let my lawyer know, and dfcs for gilmer county found out, stepped in, and picked them up. I was grateful.....till they still never showed up. GILMER COUNTY DFCS DID NOT BRING THEM BACK TO ME BECAUSE I DID NOT HAVE A JOB!!!!!!! So my children have been sitting in foster care since the beginning of 2012. At the beginning of 2015, I had lost everything. My job, my home, and my car. The dfcs worker and I talked. If I signed my parental rights up, that if I was to do so right then and their, they would force the rights from the mother and adopt them out to a good family. I was scared. I couldn't go on any longer. I had no support, no help, nothing. So I did it with one last visit. I pay $200 a month, and have not seen my child in over a year. I'm a terrible father because of what I did. I have an 8 month old today, and I'm still scared that I'm gonna be a bad father. I have criminal background, and it is hard for me to get a good job. I'm 700 dollars behind. I live 8 miles from a small town, and 60 miles from a big city. But, now, I have no license. I live in a camper. I barely eat. And also now, I'm jobless. I did the right thing. I kept a roof over my daughter's head. Food in her belly. Clothes on her back. And yet, DFCS still took them away.REPORT COMMENTS

I disagree the a mother can receive child support payments (which are not a taxable income), then be able to claim them as a dependent on their tax return. The father is getting screwed cause he cannot claim payments as a deduction!! So the mother gets all the money - throughout the year in payments and a lump sum from taxes!! What is there to show for?? The mother is living "high on the hog", while the father is working non-stop - not having any time to spend with his kids or have a life himself. Laws need to be fair for both the custodial and non-custodial parents, cause right now but is 100% one sided!!!REPORT COMMENTS

My husband was ordered to pay child support in an exceedingly high amount because his income is higher than that of the child's mother. This has caused a severe financial burden in our home. He works 12 hr shifts and a lot of overtime to try and afford the payments. However, his child's mother gets more child support when they go back to court for modifications due to the fact that he works more to try and make CS payments as well as make ends meet in our home. He has no extra money to provide additional things to our children or his other child because of this. He also has no time to spend with any of the kids because he is working so much to try and keep us all afloat. The mother of his child lives with her mother and works part time and is able to enjoy additional luxuries because she is receiving so much child support in excess of what she needs to raise the child. Additionally, child support does not help to ensure the future of children, there are no orders for CP to save for children's future, education or even their first vehicle. If CS laws are changed NCP would have additional moneys to spend on themselves as well as their child if they were allowed more freedom to decide how CS dollars are spent. Families in this country have changed, therefore, in terms of CS there is a desperate need of reform since the days it was established for the best interest of the children.REPORT COMMENTS

To whom it may CONCERN I am a 39 yr old FATHER of 3, 19/17/3, I pay for the middle child for NOW, a daughter, being threatened again. Since she was 5 yrs old her mother kept her from me and my family. Child Support said they can't help, Ive tried legal aids, their help was a failure. Didn't have the money for a lawyer, and by being raised by both parents with no drama like so i got tired of fighting, hoping for the better later. She is 17 now, nothing has changed. Now i sense it's about to happen again. My 3 yr old daughter's mother i feel is bipolar. She like most women threats she will file. I understand some cases but when the father been there from day 1 why allow it. Why allow baby mothers to continue this misuse of the system that's weak. Bipolar or other mental issues is a factor in alot of cases. The child support law is a old law, why continue to hurt us GOOD FATHERS. I personally don't like life in the US because our system sucks for the people who do right. Its time for a change, stop degrading GOOD FATHERSREPORT COMMENTS

Child support crushes the hopes and dreams of a man, and prevents him from having the means to enjoy the lives of his children. there is nothing in this country more unfair and the only reason it is not changes is because the people who need to step up dont even have the money to feed themselves. take it from me Im somehow paying over 80% of my paycheck and am now living way under poverty and this will kill me within 3 years. no doubt. I now have to lie cheat and Steal just to survive while she lives on her own with my lovely daughters and has pretty much retired at age 35. I dontae plasma every two day just to eat and will never again be able to afford to go to the dr, get my teeth cleaned, go out to dinner, get tires for my car, buy a gift for my girls... life as i knew it is over and i am left with a death sentence. Unless you have a TON of money at your disposal, once the courts get a hold of you they will grind you into a powder and throw you in the wind.REPORT COMMENTS

Child support should be a max of 35% of someone's income. There should be no way a person should have to pay 55-65 % of there income because they are not with the other parent. They both have equal responsibility and the parent paying child support should not have to give up a majority of their income because of that. They have to still support themselves.REPORT COMMENTS

BOTH PARENTS SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE TO SUPPORT THEIR CHILD/CHILDREN. Child support needs to change in every state overall. This is coming from a woman with children. My husband (whom has 1 child from a previous marriage and they have joint custody) has lived a life of hell because of child support. And it really ends up hurting the child, because a good relationship cannot be there if he is giving all of his money in child support they can't splurge and afford to be "fun" dads and do extra things when they want to do special things. On top of that, he was bribed every year by the ex wife "do this --- if you don't I will take you back to court" remind you she is young and already bipolar and don't have to work PERIOD , she gets a check from the government for her poor personality. Or should I say laziness. We would have to hide anything extra we saved for if she though he had anything to spend on himself God forbid, well her daughter better get half or 3/4 of any money in his wallet on top of child support. With joint custody both parents have to have a home to have the child live in with them.. Child support should not include money for the other parents rent or mortgage, and both parents should only just split bills. On top of that, one other major thing!! He has had joint custody and more responsibility than the mom whom never works and when they divorced was declined to ever claim his daughter under his taxes not even every other year. plEase!!! My ex refused to get a job while we were together and when things started getting really difficult with only one income, she ran away from the problems. She left me and took my son without saying a word to me. She moved in with her friends who kept telling her that she needed to do whatever it took to hold onto our son because it would bring in extra money for her. She was caught lying in court twice during the custody hearing and yet I'm made the noncustodial parent who has to pay child support. On top of that, her lawyer didn't sign and send the court order papers until 3 months after child support began. I was behind on payments before I even knew how much, and where, to send for child support. I've been accused of using my son as leverage yet that's the courts primary weapon against father's in this country!REPORT COMMENTS

Now I am supposed to pay another 20k for my oldest daughter in back support. Because I never married the mother of my children and we are now separated..how does one say they were never in the household?? Why is it so easy for them to assume that the father was not there. They ask for receipts as proof...and yet pictures paint a thousand words!! Within the ten years we were together, her work history would accumulate to 14 months and yet she is unemployed.
