At the Harrison County Dog Kennel, the place was let go to ruins and dogs were dying. The dog warden Tina Dewalt was selling her dogs out of there. A dog rescue in California and Actress Alyssa Milano had to get involved and get the place fixed. Now, they only open mon - fri 8am to 3:30 pm making it hard for people to pick up their dogs or adopt dogs. And they are not the only kennels in the country to abuse dogs. Our shelter systems are broken. At best, most are just marginal in what should be their main goal: Saving and protecting the lives of animals. Directors and some staff should not even be allowed to work with animals due to abusive, uncaring personalities. Shelters are places that are unfriendly, smelly and terrifying for animals and also to people who would normally try to adopt a shelter pet. Shelters ALL must be NO-KILL and while there are too many unwanted animals ending up in shelters, let's reward responsible pet ownership and make it much more expensive for breeders to breed animals. Mandatory s/n and microchipping animals should be at the start of trying to make this work. Spay/neuter/chip should be at no cost with all sites that the animals may frequent having scanners to track the animals...Responsibility for the glut of unwanted animals should be on the shoulders of the person who has not s/n/chipped the animal. Rewards, in addition to s/n/chip, could be free vaccinations. To say that this would not work, is to say that what we have now IS working and it is not! I believe the better way would also save taxpayers money to say nothing of freeing up the shelters....let's get together to make killing any healthy animal a thing of the past...it is easy to say it won't work and do nothing for the next year.....instead let's turn shelters into adoption centers, clean, family/animal friendly places.....that people want to visit. We also need to make people aware of what actuallly happens to animals in the shelters: Most people have not got a clue about the fate of their animal.REPORT COMMENTS

Dogs deserve a fair chance at a happy life. They didn't ask to be born, and they don't deserve to die--and too often in the most horrendous ways. There are too many sad stories about adopters and rescues being en route to save animals, only to arrive and find out the animals were destroyed just moments before.
