I am a victim of rape. Out of the six individuals who took something from me that I can never gain back and I'm still dealing with 13 years later. None of them served over eight months of jail time. My husband on the other hand is serving for conspiracy and got 15 years. I don't see where this was an act of violence but he was sentence to so much time let alone 85% when as individuals who murder rape child molesters things of those Nature's who don't give their victims a choice in any matter but make a choice themselves to take either a victim's life or take something away from them serve such a minimal time sentences I think our laws are completely twisted and with especially non-violent offenders they should not be serving 85% of their time when people are doing 3 months for rape or no time at all.REPORT COMMENTS

As a step in the right direction, I support 65% vs 85% for non-violent offenders. However the whole US penal system recourse to massive incarceration must be completely overhauled, because US massive incarceration (1000% higher than Europe per capita!) is morally wrong, unnecessarily destroy lives and families, and is very costly. I would not call selling drugs to children and adolescent a non violent crime, because addiction to crack, heroin has dire consequences on their lives, one being pushing young women to prostitution, the other being an incentive for male adolescent and young adults to favor the easy way of life as a drug dealer, making them addicted to lazyness and potentially violent criminals. However even in this case incarceration without access to education is not the solution to this serious problem; it does not even seems very deterrent.REPORT COMMENTS

Grandson had a suspended sentence for $300 dealing in stolen goods (21 yo meth addict) and was in rehab. Got a small amt of something and was kicked out of rehab after 6 months and VOP was issued. Because he had suspended sentence, was automatically sentenced to 5 years. There are so many others with nowhere near that harsh of a punishment. Serving 65% of their sentence for non-violent crimes would be a fair sentence for such. There also needs to be more rehabilitative programs in ALL Florida prisons, instead of these guys just being baby-sitted by guards who often let power go to their heads and mistreat inmates. Has a family who needs him.REPORT COMMENTS

I support the 65percent law change. We have a 40 year old son (our only child) doing time in ky.state prison with federal time running concurrent. He has about 5 more years here then will have to finish up about 6 more in federal prison. All because he has had a drug problem since he was a kid.Intead of cramming these prisons full why not try extensive in patient drug rehab. We have watched murderers get sentenced to less than half the time that our son got .REPORT COMMENTS

I support the change for non violent offenders to server 65% of their sentence. In the state of Florida prison conditions are horrendous. The food is inedible, they're not given razors in most of the state prisons in order to even maintain hygiene, they're not given a sufficient jacket to keep warm in the winter, much less decent blankets. I could go on and on about the conditions. The Florida prison system is supposedly broke so why not relieve some of the costs of housing inmates by reducing some of the over inflated unjust sentences to 65%. I watched a person get 9 1/2 years for a petit theft. Really? That's completely ridiculous.REPORT COMMENTS

You have people serving 25+ years for drugs but yet my ex husband ran me down with a car and tried to kill me and he got charged with assault and battery in the 3rd. Come on what are we doing ? Stick the killers and rapist in jail for the longer sentences and stop torturing people who have served years behind bars for a first time drug charge that are now clean and rehabilitated.REPORT COMMENTS

I totally agree with TN. These judges and police are in with these drug dealers. My son was accused by a judge by this well known drug dealer in town, that was shot and paralyzed by a black and white boy. My son who happens to be white, also has an African American room mate, he is not racist. This boy and my son was arrested for that shooting But! they could not and did not identify him. They said he had a maroon bandana over his face. I brought every color bandana I could find to his trial, even white. You could not see his face even with the white one on. The police never looked for anyone else, no evidence found at the scene from these boys. The jury, it was racist. Come to find out after the trial I found out from my son's friends that they had friend on the jury for there first time. Head juror made them vote guilty because anyone that sleeps with a ni they need to be found guilty. The kids, it was their first time and didn't know better. They polled the jury and the kids said yes, being afraid, because they were black. My son got 20 years and 20 years side by side. the other boy got 20 years.REPORT COMMENTS

Its a disgrace and embaressment to our citizens of the USA. That a person with a drug problem is sentenced severly. I think the court system is unjust and unfair. They place one person on the bench to hear the case of an individual with their own prejudice, discrimination and bias. Their de ion on the fate of another individual is personal not just. I feel every rime should fit in a certain caterogory and judgment based off that and the same for all. Not a judge giving what he want when he wants to and it's based on if he's having a good day or a bad day at the time. Judges and police officials have flaws and are far from perfect or fair. They only do to a certain group what they want because they will be upheld in a court of law by a judge that's just as crooked. They deal drugs and steal money from drug dealers but that's ok. They go on vacations and golfing off of street money. We are finding that the justice system is crashing and more curupt to that's why more crimes are being committed. Start investigating them law officials first and the rest will possibly fall in line. Locking all individuals up for petty crimes instead of letting them do time at home get jobs and keep supporting their families is the way. When they are locked up the tax dollars pay to house them their families go on welfare the country just continues to go under.REPORT COMMENTS
