I believe that everyone deserve a second chance and 65% should be for everyone. My husband has been in the system since he was 18 and now he's almost 40. He's done his share of time.

My fiance has served his time for malicious wounding and is now serving his time for his first drug charge and he was given 4 years for drugs. 11 years he is serving consecutive and their are rapist, and murders serving less time. I'm all for punishment if you are wrong but 4 years for your first drug charge is ridiculous and I cry daily that his punishment is unfair, the prisons are overcrowded and I just can't believe that these young boys are serving so much time for drugs that are being legalized and trying to support their families. I wish there was something I could do to get him home now, I know that he is not the man he use to be I know that he will do better I'm going to personally see to it. The state of Virginia is sometimes unfair and it's just a praying time.

I agree, 65% is appropriate. MIght not be a difficult case to make since the reduced costs for early release vs. long term imprisonment might appeal to lawmakers if cost savings are presented. Would also like to refine the term "sex offender" (SO) so that people convicted of a wide array of crimes aren't lumped together under this term. Someone who as a first and only crime has received internet material on a computer, but has never created it, distributed it, nor committed any improper offenses shouldn't be lumped in with those who commit much more serious SO crimes. As it stands now, someone who downloads internet material with no other crime receives a lifetime SO label even after release from prison. Mandatory minimum sentences apply, too, which are often overkill.

I want to sign for non-violent offenders to serve 65% of their time instead of 85%. I currently have a love one locked up serving time in federal prison, serving a 92 month sentence with already 48 months served.

My grandson has served 19 mths and was sentenced to federal prison until 2032 he is 24 years old. He was caught taking pictures to sell of him and a child he never molested anyone. He has turned his life around he has never been in trouble. He has 2 children and a loving family. He is a very good prisoner. The FBI brought him up on charges of more than what happened. I pray that the 65% will pass and he may start over. I know it will be to late for me but his children need his support to get by. Thank You

My son was given 25 years for VOPS. Non violent offender is wasting away with no help for his medical conditions. He has served 8 years and never been given the opportunity to get rehabilitation for his addictions. He has multiple medical issues and is in constant pain. It sometimes takes him two months to get the ibuprofen for his back that reoccurred due to an auto accident in 2005. The doctors sent him to a pain management doctor who gave him very strong medications and that is when the drug problems started again. He had been drug free for many years prior to this accident, which was no his fault, but that of another driver. Please consider helping. He has NEVER been convicted of a violent crime. Mostly drug related crimes, but never for the sell of drugs.

Is this something that is being approved? I have heard so much gossip but haven't seen anything to back it up? I definitely think the percentage should be dropped! This is coming from someone *(me) who works in a prison and sees how so many people are serving an insanely large amount of time for non violent crimes and murders are getting out long before the non violent crime offenders do. Its appalling.

I have a family member who is in prison for embezzlement. Never been in any trouble before. Was given four years. Conditions in prison are violent to say the least. Someone murders someone and they are not sentenced to this much time. The law needs to change for non violent offenders.

A false imprisonment charge that the person actually came to court high and stated they felt like they couldn't leave later to find out the person was paid in drugs to lie.. Charged with false imprisonment gave him 5 years, never been in trouble a day in his life never tried a drug never hurt anyone .. left behind a wife and 3 small children . He's missed so much over this and still serving time , waist of life and money..

My husband is a first time offender and he was given 7 years and 4 months in a federal prison for a nonviolent drug offense. I and he understands very well the mistakes he has made, but that sentence is way too long and unfair. Not only is he doing time but myself and our children are suffering right along with him. These long sentences separate and destroy families we are struggling emotionally financially my children need their dad and I need my husband. We need a better sentencing system something fair. By the way it's not like they rehabilitate them in there or help them in anyway. My husband had never been to jail and he is in there with the worst of the worst.

All nonviolent crimes need to be 65% and lower. It's unbelievable that most nonviolent crimes have to serve more than rapist and killers.

I understand the law is there to punish the guilty, but when my 74 year old father who didn't have an arrest record until his offence at 69 years older put in Federal Prison in Texas. We live in California. He didn't even hurt anybody and he is housed in low level. He gets sentenced to 6 years. I mean really! This prison system is for profit business to make money off US citizens lives. I mean we might as well go back to servants indentured on sugar plantations. At least it is a hope to better a servant instead of breaking down an American citizen.
