I completely agree that nonviolent drug offenders shld only have to serve 65% of their time. Most of these ppl have done more time then ppl that have murdered, raped, molested etc. My husband was sentenced to 30 yrs in federal prison for having 2 pills on him associated with methamphetamine. This was his first time ever having any kind of trouble with the law in his history. I'm not saying what he did was right but I do know that he has served 8 yrs of this sentence and that is more time for having 2 pills then someone who has multiple prior criminal offenses have been given for murder. -

Please change to the 65% of time for Arizona prisons and others. My husband is serving a 3 year sentence for a completely non violent offense. This does not correct the problem, we need to have more options for treatment and to address the vore issue, the abuse and negative environment can cause inmates to come out and have even more issues. Locking people away doesn't solve the issue. I velieve in some punishment for a crime, yet also being offered options.REPORT COMMENTS

My fiance is serving a life sentence for a non violent crime. He has served 16 years, I understand that he did a crime, but for how long does he have to suffer. He is a changed man. He has taken classes, worked jobs, went to school and hasn't gotten into any trouble since 2004 and it wasn't nothing serious, he has done everything that falls under the mandatory minimum resentencing act.REPORT COMMENTS

I have a female family member serving 6 yrs for non-violet white collar crime concerning money which she has to pay back. In 6 yrs she could make progress on restitution. Visited her at a federal prison camp & saw so many mothers & grandmothers locked up & I wonder if they were on house arrest with ankle monitor if it would still be punishment but a lot less for taxpayers to fund. I know the must be punished but they are releasing drug offenders & violent terrorists & these women are not likely to be a threat to the community.REPORT COMMENTS

My husband has a mandatory 10 year sentence because a gun was present at the time of the crime, no one was harmed. He has completed 5 and 1/2 years of his sentence and has not once been in trouble or received any type of write-up. He has grown during this time and also become a husband. He deserves to at least earn gain time. Earning gain time also gives inmates an incentive to behave. Please help, thank you!!REPORT COMMENTS

My husband has a sentence of 11 yrs. and has to do 85%. His was a violent crime but no one died. He has already done over 7 and half years and on his time they show he has to do 10 years before he can be released on parole. That's 9 months over 85%. He has changed his life and is in a low level Prison now getting all his welding certifications and is the Praise and worship leader in his church. I have seen child molesters and men with 11 DWI's that walk away with just probabtion. Even people that have killed someone got a lesser sentence then my husband. Please fix the 85% law. The 85% only allows him to get 4 days of good time a month. Even when he's taking college classes they don't give him anything for finishing. Our governor took out all lump sums for the state of new Mexico for college classes. They made it to where it's very hard for the inmates to get anything. They have to get a degree which they can't even choose there own classes to work towards their degree. It's just whatever they are offering at that time. Please help these inmates. Thank youREPORT COMMENTS

I have a female family member serving 6 yrs for a white collar crime, her first offense. No excuses, she broke the law, but as I see some violent drug offenders & violent terrorists being released, I wonder why so many first time, non violent offenders are having to be locked up. I visited her recently in this prison camp & saw so many mothers & grandmothers locked away from their children & wondered with the cost of keeping an inmate in prison why couldn't some of these women be put on house arrest with an ankle monitor. My family member must pay restitution & it would benefit the system more if she was on the outside working toward that goal. Most of these women are no danger to the community.REPORT COMMENTS

The Law needs to be changed for non-violent offenders to serve 65% of their sentences instead of the current 85%. There is overcrowded, unhealthy, and unsafe conditions because of the severity in our sentencing laws for addicts and non-violent offenders. The ROP is also exacerbating the unusally high number of inmates and doubling the years to be served than a first time offender. This needs to be eliminated and each person's situation should be evaluated individually. If we focused more on rehabilitation rather than punishment, our recidivism rate would decrease. The cost to house an inmate is negatively impacting our state budget and this money could be used for education and rehabilitation programs. Please pass this 65% Law!REPORT COMMENTS
