The prisons are overpopulated. We continue to build prisons to keep up with the demand. Inmates deserve and need to feel that their lives mean something to society. We need to go back to a system that focuses on reform.Apr 5th, 2017Daisy U. from Dublin, CA signed.

I believe this law should be passed united states wide there people serving time in prison for there whole child's life for non violent crimes. Its not right. I strongly believe this law should be passed in 2017. So there are more cells for people who do murder for no reareason. And rape its those people must deserve to do hard time. Not the ones who mess up just once and don't deserve to miss out on there kids growing up and accomplish everything they set there minds to. I would to have my dad there to watch me graduate .John Phillip LEDFORD. I hope for him to be there.REPORT COMMENTS

It is appalling that non violent offenders are treated the same as those that murder and rape! Our justice system is broken, as I have seen it fail over and over and completely destroy people's lives! It Sets? them up for failure! There are roadblocks everywhere they turn and so they get depressed and have no hope and feel worthless so something definitely has to change ASAPREPORT COMMENTS

As a taxpayer I completely agree, we shouldn't have to continuously pay the state to keep non-violent criminals behind bars. We shelter, clothe, and feed them all for years on top of years but if you check other counties, their prisons are more like short term detention centers. Give our non-violent men and women the minimum time they deserve and let them go home to their families and friends!REPORT COMMENTS

Federal prison camps waste taxpayer's money. Non-violent offenders need to be serving their communities through community service, not serving time. They need to make amends for their wrong doings. Let them out to earn real wages to help make those amends. They are not doing anything worthwhile in prision, it is just a waste of the inmate's time and the taxpayer's money. Reduce the time served now.REPORT COMMENTS

PLEASE CHANGE THE LAW SOON... My husband is a first time NON VIOLENT drug offender that was sentenced and sent straight to a camp because of his points being so low. WE DID NOT EVEN IMAGINE HE WOULD BE TAKEN AWAY FROM US in a matter of minutes the morning of his sentenced along with a RIDICULOUS amount of years given .We were expecting a sentencing of probation or home confinement. That was the day OUR FAMILY was torn apart and our lifes changed. He has been away from his FAMILY "wife and five children" for 2 years now and NO ONE UNDERSTANDS WHAT IT DOES TO A FAMILY AND THE EFFECT IT HAS ON THE CHILDREN until you have gone through it. When children had both parents in their life together for 18 years as mine did and have never been with out one or the other parent away . When all of a sudden just like that DADS put in handcuffs and taken away is the worse thing for a child. I understand my husband "BROKE THE LAW"( so many mistakes in his case, they can say and do what they want) but, I also know and have learned alote after going through it, how the system works & what it's really about? IT'S MEANT TO BRAKE FAMILY'S APART leaving one to be a single parent and STRUGGLE so that EVENTUALLY THE CHILDREN OR CHILD ACT OUT CAUSING A CYCLE SO THEY TO END UP BECOMING PART OF THE "PRISON" SYSTEM AS WELL. Knowing it will cause MENTAL, EMOTIONAL hurt and pain that will probably at some point in their life lead to ways and that kind of behavior it most likely wouldn't of if BOTH PARENTS WERE KEPT UNDER ONE ROOF and ABLE TO CONTINUE PARENTING TOGETHER so that their IS NO scaring left on ANYONE in the FAMILY..REPORT COMMENTS

I completely agree with this. The law should be changed. My husband of 8 years is a first time, COMPLETELY NON VIOLENT federal drug offender and is being sentenced March 30, 2017. We have a 9 year old daughter and a 5 year old son that NEED their father desperately. I know he broke the law and must be punished and I am in no way trying to deny that. However, serving 85% of his sentence is a bit extreme for a first time offender, especially because he is an amazing husband and father and has never been violent in his life. 65% is an extremely acceptable negotiation. Please, there are so many children in this world who are fatherless because the fathers are worthless and choose not to be in their lives. We should focus more on rehabilitation and redirecting their lifestyle choices so they can be with their families than keeping them locked up for insane amounts of time while we let child abusers, rapists, and murders out sooner than we do drug offenders.REPORT COMMENTS

Yes please change the laws, my husband if 30yrs, is getting ready to serve a 5yr mandatory sentence for a first time offense, for selling some of his pain pills to a supposed friend who was on probation, and in trouble again so had a undercover with her. He has never been in trouble and we both know it was wrong, but doesn't deserve 5yrs for this. He's a great husband, father and grandfather. Works 5 to 7 days a week for his family, and regrets what he did. But wasn't out selling yo everyone, just made this mistake with her. 5yrs is to long, and can't get out early for work time or good behavior, come on its a ridiculous sentencing.REPORT COMMENTS

I witnessed my brother receive an over the top sentence for his offense and was shocked to see the process unfold. I can't help but feel the participants in his hearing were padding their conviction statistics rather than doling out a just sentence that fit my brother's particular crime. I was not impressed at all by the proceedings nor the judgment of the presiding Court Official. For someone appointed the position by the President of the United States you'd expect a much better evaluation of the overall circumstances. I'm praying and supporting my Brother and the countless other souls being warehoused by a system of 'unjustice' that is sadly corrupt from top to bottom. No one in our family is in denial that our loved one committed a crime. My Brother deserves to be in prison for what he did but his sentence was twice the mandatory minimum and his proceeding failed to prove to our family the reason why? My Brother, and many, many others deserve a better chance than to have their lives completely ruined by failing to abide by the law for a single offense.REPORT COMMENTS

Please help change this, people are able to change and I feel 10 and 20 yeae sentences are to harsh. What about the children and families! The system is corrupt; I have a son who is going to lose his mother. I chose to do something illegal but it was not on purpose. Now im facing Federal Prison time and god knows how much time they want to give me. Im not a bad person just chose the wrong crowd and I do believe everyone should have a second chance.REPORT COMMENTS

A lot of people make freak mistakes in life every day in life that are wrong, but that doesn't mean they are a bad person. Nobody is perfect! These people suffering harsh sentencing to serve 85% of there time is to crucial for someone who has never been in trouble prior to a present conviction! 65% is more then enough time for an inmate who is incarcerated who has no prior convictions. These people are not a threat to society and surely can make a big difference to their families lives and society! PLEASE PASS THIS LAW IN ARIZONA TO 65% so these inmates who are incarcerated can get home to their families where they belong and proceed with life again!REPORT COMMENTS
