I am on the board of the Galveston County Food Bank / Gleanings from the Harvest. These funds are a significant resource for families and individuals still waiting on safe housing, furniture, appliances, and other items needed to fully recover from Hurricane Ike. I have worked with hurricane victims for 5 years (since Rita). This money is fundamental to their being able to recover and get back to a life that is at all normal. Many of them are senior citizens and/or disabled, whose families cannot help them because they are recovering, too. The committee that disburses these funds has made it a priority to spend them with local businesses, so the money is also a boon to local businesses, many of whom have not completely returned to their pre-storm level of operation.REPORT COMMENTS
