Although most affected by WEP are teachers, gov workers etc, It is also grossly unfair that I as an Ex Brit have pad into the UK social system and accrued full benefits and also pain int to the US system and have accrued the needed credits but will have my Social security cut in half in both countries. How can this be fair or logical, Its wrong. I what I worked all my life for a pension and will lose half because I come under the insane WEP laws. Please repeal this act. I am not a gov employee or teacher and will not receive any other accrued pension like them.Aug 4th, 2015Someone from Nevada, MO writes:
I was vested in Social Security before I went into teaching because I had worked enough quarters and had paid in enough money to earn benefits. Recently I was told by my local Social Security office that because I am a teacher I am only going to be allowed to draw about ten percent of my already earned Social Security benefits. I am a Certified Teacher but because of my position as a Parent Educator have also been paying into social security for the last seven or more years. This, however, will still not increase what I can draw in Social Security benefits. To make matters worse, the state of Missouri now limits what the school and I can pay into my Teacher Retirement so those benefits will be cut as well. This just seems wrong to cut benefits in both systems. I believe that anyone that works and pays in to Social Security should be able to draw the benefits they have earned without being discriminated against because they are a teacher or they have paid into another retirement system. Please repeal the WEP/GOP and protect all who have worked so hard to pay in and earn those benefits!REPORT COMMENTS

As citizens, we should not have to beg for our congressional representatives to repeal what has already been done in other states. Why are only 7-15 states singling out their city, county and government employees/retirees to carry the burden that wiser states have already seen fit to lift on their educators and civic employees? This is a small concession that could have far reaching improvements in the lives of so many who relie on the benefits of Social Security and Pension benefits as they reach retirement. Many grandparents today are carrying the additional burden to provide for their grandchildren into retirement. Many ex-spouses are left destitute and alone in retirement after devoting years to carrying for their families. There is no "double dipping" for those of us who just want to live our final years in dignity. Shame on our leaders who have dragged their feet this long.REPORT COMMENTS

I have paid in close to $42,000 and will not receive one penny in social security unless the WEP/GPO is repealed. My ex-husband, a former electrical engineer in the technology industry, can collect 1/2 of my teacher's retirement and ALL of his social security. I NEED MY SOCIAL SECURITY!!! Please! If I do not receive benefits the least the SSA can do is return my $42,000.REPORT COMMENTS

I worked in the public sector and paid social security before becoming a teacher. Do you realize that a teacher's retirement benefits are not enough to live on after retirement? Do you also realize that the social security benefits I earned will be denied because I choose to work in a career that pays well below the minimum wage after you take into account the real amount of time I put into my job to educate our nation's children?REPORT COMMENTS

As someone who has worked in the field of education for 20 years, I and many others stand to lose thousands of hard earned dollars. We educated children, didn't make huge amounts of money and we need a fair retirement income.REPORT COMMENTS

I did not enter the field of education until the age of 34. I am depending on the social security benefits as well as my teacher pension. If my S.S. benefits are going to be limited, then I should be able to have my overall contributions in a lump sum, so that I have substantial time to invest the money that I contributed. All of the states should have the same law in regards to fairness.REPORT COMMENTS

Dear President Obama, When you were first running for President you told us that you would repeal the Government Pension Offset and the Windfall Elimination Provision. You knew all about these unfair offsets, since they affect Illinois employees as well as public servants across the country. We were hurt when our public employers didn?t pay FICA taxes for us, and now, as a double penalty, we lose some or all of the retirement benefits that we earned in other work. Stand up for what you know is right! Repeal the GPO/WEP and strengthen Social Security!REPORT COMMENTS
