In the state of Virginia, misdemeanors are treated as if you have a felony conviction on your criminal record. Its very hard to obtain employment.Jun 18th, 2013Someone from Broken Arrow, OK writes:
There should be some way for a person to make a new life for themselves after they pay their dues for making a bad decision. I think when you give people the power to suppress rights on someone, they will do so. There needs to be a out for first time offenders. Now it's plastered all over the internet, and that should be controlled better. It all costs money to clear it up too. There is no end to it for most people. Where is there any hope?REPORT COMMENTS

It's sad that one bad decision in ones life can ruin their right to earn a living forever even if they had masters degrees. Once a person makes a mistake, there is a different world out there where the courts and employers won't cut any slack. Even some charges are not treated as felonies in all the states. Money talks and those who don't have it, don't get the breaks in middle America.REPORT COMMENTS

NJ won't allow an expungement if you ever received ANY pre-trial-intervention program. It is impossible to support a family when you can't get a job. People need to be prohibited from doing background checks on others because they misuse and abuse the information.REPORT COMMENTS

An old conviction from ten years ago can still harm the life of a person to the point that they can not find a job to support their family in the State of Virginia. How horrible in the land of the free their is still such a horrible unforgiving system!REPORT COMMENTS

I have watch my child struggle with criminal charges on his record for stupid things done as a very young adult. Why are people sentenced to a life sentence in the state of virginia for minor crimes. This is unfair. Charges should be removed after a certain period once the punishment is served and fines paid. Why continue to punish our young people over and over again for petty or non violent or victimless crimes. Its like waking up everyday being reminded of a list of your mistakes forever. Please change the laws and allow for a better future for those who have already paid for their crimes.REPORT COMMENTS

4 and a half years ago I was told by the Commonwealth Attorney in Stafford County to either plead guilty to a misdemeanor charge or he was revoking my unsecured bond and sending me to jail until trial. Needless to say, never having been in any trouble not even as a teenager and knowing I had 2 girls to raise I plead guilty to something I didn't do so I wouldn't go to jail and lose my girls. Now 4 and half years later I can't even get a job at McDonald's. It's horrible that good citizens lose who they are and never regain themselves as Americans due to our Commonwealth state. Please lets change this!!!!!REPORT COMMENTS

It's a travesty to punish a individual for the rest of their life after they paid their"dues"." Due the crime due the time" should be it. Not due your time and then pay forever for your mistake. This is a discrimination that harms everyone. Very intelligent, talented individuals are astrasized forever. If the POTUS does nothing else, let's pray he pushes for this.REPORT COMMENTS
