I've been attempting to join the MARINES for about a year now but continue facing discrimination and disqualification due to a tatoo that just touches the colar of a shirt. The un noticible mark has had me bouncing all around the branches of military. I feel the title of MARINE burning in my heart. I fear no challenge but now I feel I fell short of my life goal to become a MARINE. I have just weeks now to join the ARMY... A branch that was not my first choice. Please take into consideration the level of commitment men and women have to serve our country. The rule was only passed by the likes of people that will never see the reality of war. The Americanism of what you do to your body is the embodiment of all the reasons we would like to fight for the country. Hope you listen to the petition.Aug 25th, 2010Someone from Tucson, AZ signed.

I agree that Marines who are grandfathered are treated the same as those who have no tattoos at all.REPORT COMMENTS

I concur with John Waytas' remarks and I to wished to become a Marine Warrant Officer. I am now ineligible due to this recent amplification to the tattoo policy. I was previously grandfathered as was the other Marines of my generation. I hope that a waiver becomes available so that Marines like John Waytas and myself are atleast provided an opportunity to apply for the Warrant Officer Program.REPORT COMMENTS

Just today I tried to address Commandant of the Marine Corps, General Conway, about this issue. I asked "Would he consider revising the amplification to the tattoo policy to include grandfathering for Marines like myself due to the fact there it has excluded a significant number of highly qualified candidates for Warrant Officer and next due to the fact the recent FY11 Warrant Officer Board had such a dramatic decline in the number of packages submitted due to this. Futhermore, some occupational specialties like mine didn't have enough applicants to fill the required number of quotas needed for the future fiscal year. I was then dismissed by the Commandant and Sergeant Major of the Marine, SgtMaj Kent, gave me an off topic answer stating that he himself has tattoos and has nothing against them. He also stated during this answer that the new amplification acutally lessens the rules and requirements to become a Warrant Officer. This was unacceptable to me and I believe that when I got my sleeve tattoo in 2003 when I was able to do so and then incorporate policy which inhibits leaders like myself to better the Marine Corps is just hipocritical and prejudicial. I personally applied to the FY10 board and was denied due my tattoo. I then could not submit for the FY11 board as the amplification would not allow it. I am an outstanding Marine and has dedicated everything I do to make it better day by day. I have recieved some of the highest fitness reports by my officers and all have recommended me to become a warrant officer on all of these fitness reports. I also have numerous letters of recommendation from all my superiors past and present. I have two Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals for my direct involvement and superior performance of my duties in support of Operations Iraqi and Enduring Freedom. One more Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal reduced from a Commendation Medal for performing the duties three ranks above me and acting as the technical expert within my division. I also have other personal awards for superior performance and knowledge of my job. I have also recieved other awards for finishing third of 234 Sergeants at Sergeants course in 2008. I also have received commendations from the course that all Warrant Officers selected in my occupational specialty must attend. I exceeded the senior Staff Non-Commissioned Officers and Commissioned Officers and finished second. The list could go on and on, but all in all, I think a Marine with my record, knowledge and leadership capabilities should not be dismissed by the Marine Corps due to a quarter sleeve tattoo on my right forearm. Please pass this awesome petition around for other affected by this prejudicial MARADMIN and get those who deserve to lead in those positions before we fill these billets with the best of what we got.REPORT COMMENTS

I am an E-8 in the Marine Corps with 18 plus years and have several visible tattoos that were all completed prior to 2007. I serve in a billet that is professional and often interact with very senior officers and foreign mlitary officers. The fact that I have tattoos have never interfered with my capability to do my job. I agree with the petition that was written and support it wholeheartedly.REPORT COMMENTS

My future son in law Marine has some tatoos, and yet he'd be an excellent officer candidate. I hope the Marines would not eliminate their own corps-grown leaders just because of tattoos.REPORT COMMENTS
