Few months back I completely committed myself to training and getting in shape so I could join the Marines. Now as I am ever so close to my goal to being fit, I learn that my tattoos are the thing thats going to bring me down? While I admit I have quite a few not one of them touches my hands, neck, feet, head, face or anywhere else inappropriate. I have nothing offensive inked onto my body so I seriously do not see what the enormous controversy is over it. I was crushed when i heard that i would be denied from joining the Marines because the entire i worked hard i had the idea going that "I'm almost there" but now it appears that chance is lost. I'm going to be joining the Army in about a month or two, and like other people who are going through the same thing, the Army wasn't my first choice. Not that I am in any way talking down on the Army, i know plenty of people who served proud in that branch. It is only with a heavy heart that I walk to the Army recruiting center instead of the Marines because I was denied for something as ridiculous as my tattoos. If anything Marines with sleeves who want to re enlist should be allowed! I am willing to fight, and die if needed, for my country and those around me so the Corps lost what could of been a good Marine. To everyone else here who is trying to get in, I wish you the best of luck, I really do.Mar 1st, 2011Someone from Corona, CA writes:

Some of the best men I worked with and worked under wore their experiences on their sleeves. The brothers they lost, the confusion they felt, the knowledge that death can come quickly to all was proudly displayed on their arms. At no time did I observe their job performance or professionalism drop as a result of some extra ink on their skin. We need the best we can get to fight in this new era of warfare, not people who look the most presentable. This new policy has left several gaps in leadership as more and more combat veterans decide to leave the Corps as the focus shifts from winning wars to worrying about body art. To win against any enemy we need strength of character, loyalty, a well developed sense of morals, and intelligence. What we don't need is to disqualify someone who possess these traits because they happen to have a few too many tattoos.REPORT COMMENTS

Hello i feel like we as an American are being discriminated against. A tattoo will not set us apart from somone without a tattoo. I have been fighting back and fourth to becpme a Marine. i have a tattoo that starts at my elbow up to my shoulder. Its part of my heritage and who i am. I thought it was an equal opportunity. I will become my dream. A Marine.REPORT COMMENTS

I completely agree. It is absolutely discrimination. The military is denying opportunity to people based on their LOOKS and not their qualifications and content of character. It's ridiculous.REPORT COMMENTS

I was talking with recruiters for a whole year about enlisting, underwent surgery just for the sake of a future career within the marines, had a tat on my arm, that is hidden with a shirt, an it was considered a sleeve an i lost my chance, and for what ****ing reason an imagine? turning away people who are ready willing to serve their country because of a tattoo that is in no way shape or form offensive, they call it not showing an upholding the morales of the corp yet they turn down eager potential recruits. Im 21 yr old male with no outstanding law violations an i wanted to enlist with the USMC an was turned down because of a policy claiming i wouldnt uphold the USMC traditions an values because i have a tattooREPORT COMMENTS

This is utterly the most ignorant thing I've ever seen. What in the world does having a tattoo have to do with having the ability to protect and serve our country? Have the US Marines gotten to the point that they have become so particular that having a tattoo would prevent someone from enlisting in their branch of service? I think someone really needs to take a better look at this policy because you could end up loosing alot of GOOD MEN when your advertisement always says we're looking for a few GOOD MEN!REPORT COMMENTS

I know men that served their county with honor as officers. They had tattoos on their forearms and other parts of their body. They also wore a Trident on their chest! To pass over brave warriors just for some ink under their skin is asinine!REPORT COMMENTS

I am a USMC Sergeant currently considering making this my career but can't understand how tattoos that are not in any way offensive can be a problem. But yet we are letting homosexuality be acceptable, really where are our moral standards really headed? Hey America go ahead sign up if your gay it's o.k. but my brothers with ink who would die for there country are no-longer allowed. REALLY is this the direction our country is really headed? So much for the strongest most feared and respected foghting force in the world if we dont re-think our standards.REPORT COMMENTS

if your willing to gi e up your life and fight for our freedom - why is the freedom of self expression being taken away? Shouldn't matter if you have tattoos, they don't affect the ability to do your job.REPORT COMMENTS
