Dear Ma'am or Sir, I understand the idea behind the policy, however, I disagree entirely. Tattoos do not dictate the character or ability of an individual to lead. As a former Marine, I fear that this policy will become detrimental to not only the US Marine Corps but to the United States as well. Not one single qualified Marine should be denied the opportunity to pursue a commission because of ?grandfathered? tattoos. This policy will deny Marines the opportunity to be lead by the best available officers and that policy, Sir or Ma?am, may not only compromise a mission but will also put lives at risk. I urge you to please repeal the policy in question as it is a no win situation for everybody involved. To deny a worthy and qualified Marine the chance best serve our Corps due to this policy is not in keeping with the highest standards of the United States Marine Corps. It may as well be said, ?the highest standards of the Marine Corps without tattoos below the sleeve?, and that is an injustice to every Mother and Wife that trusts that their Marine is being lead by the best man available. Thank you for your time and God bless America.

Marines should not be denied from doing any kind of duties due to the fact that they have tattoos. They should only take into consideration their performance. Basing it on whether they have tattoos or not is just ridiculous after all that they do for our country!

I thought the government was not allowed to judge people based on the color of their skin, and here we are, judging people based on the color ON their skin. Get real.

I have been serving for 12 years now and I have a successful tour on Recruiting Duty (I had my sleeves then). Why is that the only special duty I can perform now is Drill Instructor? I'm smart enough, strong enough and brave enough to do anything in the corps, but I am discriminated against and limited to being only a DI. Congress should fight for the men and women who are fighting for them. Why does it matter if I have tattoos? Does the enemy care? Does the public care that Marines have tattoos? Next time you are in a public place look around Sir, I'm sure you'll see some crusty ole Jarhead with an EGA on his forearm. How about you tell him what you tell us and see what kind of remark you get back. No one cares about Marines and tattoos. If ain't broke - don't fix it!

This is a bunch of bs. So glad I left the Corps in 09' because there were too many dumb & stupid*****rules that are definitely not necessary to even begin with in the first place.

Due to economic hardship, my fiancee wanted to re-enlist back into the USMC, but with his sleeve tattoo, he was denied. He served 4 years, 2 tour, and suffered emotionally and physically for this country. Then to be denied when he wants to risk his life for this country because of tattoos, one of the EGA on his forearm, a cross, Jesus with tears, and Mary, mother of Jesus. United States is suppose to be the strongest military force in the world and because of this rule, you will be losing some of the best leaders in the USMC. Think about it congress... Who would you rather have protecting you? You're suppose to be the voice of the nation..

Marines should not be judged by the amount of ink they have; they should be judged by job proficiency, physical fitness, and leadership. The only reason this policy is in effect is because the Marine Corps has ALWAYS been a counter-culture and has gone away from social norms. When tattoos were taboo, they were fine to have in the Corps, now that they are accepted more in mainstream society, the Corps has decided they have to go.

This year i will be graduating with a bachelors in finance. I tried to apply for OCS and was denied because of my sleeve tattoos. I don't want anything more than to be a Marine Corps officer. I feel this tattoo policy is making the Corps lose a lot of potentially great leaders.

Last year I went to talk to a recruiter about joining the marines and was told to come back and talk to him this year after I had gotten some things straightened out in my life. Anyways I had the very same tattoos this year as last year (just two on my forearm) and was denied when I went to talk about joining this year. I think that the tattoo policy is very discriminating to those of us who have tattoos and only want to help make this country a safer place for our friends, family, and fellow americans.

I agree with Nicholas, the Government SHOULDN'T worry about someone having ink on their arms. I have sleeves, they go from the back of my hands to my shoulders. They're tribal dragons. How that's an issue, I'd love to know. They don't hinder me from doing anything. Can go to work without them causing me problems. Can throw a football, can do push-ups, pull-ups. Can run up and down the street with them... Only thing they do is cause people to get the WRONG impression of me. I refuse to join any other branch. That to me, would be like admitting to myself I'm not good enough to be one. A Marine is what I want to be, and a Marine is what I WILL be.

I have been dreaming of becoming a Marine since I was in grade school, I followed those dreams through out highschool when tattoos were not an issue, then finally when I was qualified to go and enlist, I got turned away because I have arm tattoos. I even kept in touch with the recruiters in my area and went to PT with the Marines waiting to be shipped out. Just due to some ink under my skin I am not able to follow my biggest dream and be one of the best. This is very hard for me to comprehend with the fact that some recruiters try and push people to enlist and here I am, wanting to go on my own.
