16 years after the fact and I still wander if Texas is ever gonna up the quest to have more prisons..it's almost as if they want you to fail and go back. As large as the ex-felon population is here in Texas alot of people could be put back to work and off government assistance if Texas would pass the law to remove those horrifing words "have you ever been convicted of a crime/felony" off employement applications. I have been endless looking for work that I am more than qualififed for and always turned down when they get to the part where I admit I have been convicted.I am a single mother and I have to provide for my family. I feel I am certianly headed to accepting that minimum wage job and it will take two of them to secure my financial needs.

How can we expect our country to survive if we are crippling ourselves with our own laws and ways that are causing serious harm in ways that were not put into thought before the laws were made. Let them be free from the debt they paid the price for.

They have paid their debt in full, so why the permanent life sentence for a non-violent first time offender. Are we not better than N.Korea, Iran or China? Unfortunately our actions show we are just like them. Let's show the world we are an empathetic, merciful and just Nation. Vote Yes, and Pass H.R. 1529 - give folks their life back.

I have been on Parole for 14 yrs, I was recently laid off from a position I had for 7 years. Now, being a single mother, I can't get another decent job because of all the stupid background checks. It is totally unfair and uncalled for. I paid my debt to society. Why would the government want us to continue to be failures because of their crazy laws? Come we are people too and we deserve a 2nd chance...

Come to Texas on vacation, leave on probation...this is what my girls from Women at the Well House (nonprofit) tell me. The Texas and Georgia felon are the worst and most unforgiving laws I have researched in my time working for women exoffenders and their integration back into society. A labled person is a stigmatized person who begins to feel helpless and hopeless in their eforts to be successful and working/contributing citizens. Let's not throw more barriers and obstacles up for them than they already have to hurdle. Exoffenders are usually just people forced to survive on less than a living wage and forced into deviance by their own society. Recognize the problems we have caused by inequitable edcuation/health access/non- demandable work skills and specialization caused by the stagnating service economy conditions and lack of advancement opportunities due to corporate greed.

The perpetual life sentence imposed violates the Eighth Amendment: forbids excessive bail or fines, and cruel and unusual punishment. The first time non-violent offender has paid the debt owed to society, so please set them free by expungement. The need for "wearing" a scarlet letter are draconian.

This is not only the compassionate thing to do, it also makes the most sense. It helps return people as productive members of society, which is what the "correctional institutions" are supposed to be doing..

I believe those individuals who have completed their sentences and have truly committed themselves to start a "new life" free from previous negative actions should be allowed a true second chance. How can a person go forward if they are constantly reminded of their past.

Get it done, get it done now. You members of congress have dodged this bill for years. Now is the time to do the right thing.

This bill would reduce crime and recidivism were it to be signed into law.
