I do know people who have made mistakes in their life and gotten felonies. It is very hard to have to watch them long for any sort of job and not get one. NOW either their "debt to society" is paid or it isn't. How are they expected to move on with their lives.

I feel that people deserve a 2nd chance, and some of the crimes aren't bad as ones incarcerated. People within time grow up, or whatever the situation may be, either if they are innocent and unaware of there surroundings, as in being trusting with people, it causes a whole different life when you get a misdemeanor. Please consider this, after all in the long run- it will save a lot of people tax money, welfare, when in reality we can work like everyone else instead of depending on everyone's money to support us. I think that's something to think about.

States offer ex-offenders a way to expunge their old records after a certain amount of time with reasonable requirements. If the federal government does not offer similar recourse - that is a form of discrimination and hurts our country's productivity. It is also immoral to deny a well-meaning person, who did not commit violence against anyone else any opportunity to improve their lot and get their lives and livelihoods back. Please, Mr. Rangel. Get so-sponsors for this bill and follow it all the way to passage this year. It is even more important to many of us than health care reform (although keep up the good work on that, too.)

Those who have paid their debt to society deserve a second chance at life. What good is rehabilitation at all if all that awaits them outside the prison is a world who won't house or hire an ex-felon? This needs to be legally recognized as discrimination. Because that's exactly what it is. A friend of mine committed 2nd degree robbery when he was a minor, but was charged as an adult. It's been over ten years that he has been walking the straight and narrow path, and he can't even get a job at Target. Is this justice?

I strong agree with this as everyone has made mistakes some bigger than others, look at what is going on with government there are those currently in this arena that have mad mistakes but are allowed to keep thier positions and get second...third and forth chances the same should hold tru for the rest of society!

I was convicted of a felony I did not do and the hendrance is a gross miscarriage of justice if I did or did not.(Supposed victim knows NOTHING about it) I paid my debt to society rather I owed it or not and I am STILL paying it.I am soon to have my civil rights restored but it is not enough to restore MY CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS ! I cannot get a decent job for the background checks & therefore I cannot afford an attorney to straighten it all out. There ARE innocents to be considered as well but we have all paid our debt to society and deserve our amendmant rights.

My convictions were in 1986. I have 9 years in construction management and as you know this field has completely dried up. I am a 47 year old white male and cn not get hired anywhere that has a background check. Temp services now run these checks and all wrehouse work now is handled through a temp service. Fast food will not hire someone my age except in management but because of my convictions they won't hire me in management! God Bless and plese help! I deserve to vote in elections as well as to earn a good living Thanks

I know of one very special man who paid his debt to society, put himself through school, graduated with honors, raised 3 kids and STILL cannot live down what happened 20+ years ago. He's done his best to turn his life around, yet he has been denied housing (couldn't rent an apartment), can't vote, won't be selected for jury duty, can't own a gun / defend his family from harm all because of some really dumb things he did a lifetime ago. I ask that our country have mercy on these folks - we need to give them an incentive to contribute to society again. How can we do that if we won't let them work?
