After hearing about this bill it now has my unconditional support. Its extremely unfair that people who have made mistakes in life that truly want to change their life for the better must be punished forever! If the states can expungement laws its totally out of balance that the fed can not. I stand behind HR1529 100 percent and stonngly urge our representatives to get this bill out of comittee for a vote because everybody who desires a second chance and wants to make a difference in their lives deserves one!Oct 13th, 2009Someone from Beaumont, TX writes:
I was convicted for the delaying, and detaining of U.S. Mail and I recieved 3 years probation, but this is the only thing I have ever done in my life and it wasn't that bad. I want a second chance and I would like everyones help for those like me and have harsher crimes and punishments.REPORT COMMENTS

We spend tax dollars reforming other people who come to America's lifes. Is it not time to do such a simple thing for our American Citizens by passing the H. R. 1529and allow them to have a chance to gain employment, put their families back together, and give back to America ,and truly allow REFORM to take place.REPORT COMMENTS

Going back to work after prison has been proven by research-based studies to be a significant deterrent to recidivism. This would be a useful measure to help rehab non-violent first time offenders.REPORT COMMENTS

They have paid their dues to society, however the system of man made laws will not let any of them forget. I ask that you please give these people a chance to make things right. Because one day it might just be you, wearing that jail suit.REPORT COMMENTS

We have done our time, and paid our debt to society. Yet, we are discriminated against in housing, employment, even public assistance (food stamps). This is madness, and something has to be done about it.REPORT COMMENTS

I was convicted of a felony in 1973. It cost me my job in 2003. Prior to 9/11 most businesses did background checks that considered most recent 5 years of your life. I was always considered a good employee prior to 9/11. Please give people a second chance.REPORT COMMENTS

i just wanted to state that if we are ever going to have a better Justice system then those who have committed crimes shouldnt be punished for life. In the state if Wisconsin The Justice System is known as Corrections, if we as state am correcting things for those who have committed crime and have paid their time then why are we not helping them now? Its unfair to have someone who did a crime 5 or more years and still have that on the record esp. if they have not committed a crime since and done nothing but comply with the Justice System.REPORT COMMENTS

This is long overdue and much needed. Also, why should there be a 'life sentence' for those who have done their time, where they have jobs denied them, when government officials, who never serve a day in prison, break more laws than any ordinary citizen ever will?!REPORT COMMENTS

This will reduce crime, add money to the tax rolls and be a decent thing to do in order to offer justice to people who have been punished far beyond what is right.REPORT COMMENTS
