When I was 19 years old, I was a corrections officer and a volunteer fire fighter. however I could not stay with the fire dept because corrections was consuming my life, and after doing so I did not feel it necessary to take my street legal amber and white lights out. Unfortunately one day on my way to work I got pulled over for speeding and when asked by the state trooper why I had the lights, I told him it was because I used to be a firefighter, and by doing so I was impersonating a firefighter which is a third degree felony. I was given a pretrial diversion and I took it because I was told that it wouldn't effect my chances of going into the military because of the fact it isn't a conviction... they lied... the military won't take me now because they look at it as a plea of guilt. I was about to start college for criminal justice right before this happened too. I have SAVED lives! And now you won't even let me selflessly serve my country? This so called justice system is not only ignorant, but it is unlawful and unjust. I rest my case.Sep 12th, 2012Someone from Montgomery, TX writes:

I am a single mother who has done good to stay away from negative people and bad influences. I was convicted with a felony in 2009 for a fight I had with an old friend in her house. I never thought having a record would affect me this much. I haven't been able to work since and I am still looking. I have wanted to join the military since teenhood, having vets and active duty soldiers in my family. My heart is burden with the fact that because of one mistake I cannot follow the military legacy laid down by those before me. Please pass this bill. It would change the live of my family of two forever.REPORT COMMENTS

I am a reformed felon. One of my life long dreams has always been to pursue a military career and be someone my son and daughters can look up to. I am not bashing my government because believe me I'm more proud to be American than most.I just wish they would give me a second chance. I'm thankful everyday that I have a good job and a great boss who was willing to judge me for the man I am today, and not the boy I was then. I only wish my country would too.REPORT COMMENTS

Hey Honorable President Barack Obama Give Felons The Right To Join The Army/Military 1,300 Letters and Emails Sent So Far I am asking congress to support letting felons into the army/military. I think that if someone has proven to change there ways in life and be a role model citizen then there is no reason to not let them join. This is descrimination against USA citizens. These people are trying to better there life and that is what the USA stands for. Hey I'm a ex felon looking for some help and the American dream to happen. my story starts like this when I was 14 years old I made my worse mistake, regretful, and not thinking decision in my life to get my life. I never forgive myself til this day what that happen but it did happen and I had a dream when I was a little boy when I was growing up and my dream was and still is today is to join and serve my nation and the men and women in this country. Now I'm older and more wiser and learned from my foolish mistakes that I wish I never done it them almost 7 Years ago. I just want to have the second chance on life to be something and someone that younger people in our nation that look up to and to be when they grow up. It's like too hard too do anything to find work I'm just tired to be treated like dirt and be treated like a human we all make mistakes while we're young and we do change after years and years of getting doors slammed in our faces that people don't want us to work with them or fight for our nation.i think we should be equal with other people in our nation.we all have the same blood but were different because we have made a mistake we all know that no one is perfect in life.if everyone was perfect we wouldnt have war and conflict in life.i really think that we should just have a little better life then being rejected. I think felons should have a second chance on life.REPORT COMMENTS

All I ever wanted to do in my life was serve in the Army but when I was 13 I was charged with a felony and now since I got into a fight with my brother (who doesn't fight with siblings once in awhile?) I can't pursue my dream of becoming a firefighter. Some of the best acting people at my dad's restaurant are felons who made a mistake in their life. GIVE FELONS A SECOND CHANCE!REPORT COMMENTS

I made some mistakes during the time of which I was a young adult at age 18. I've always wanted to join the military, I just strayed off the right path and got mixed in with the wrong crowd. I was sentenced to 8 years probation and $10,270 in fines. I got my fines paid in 3.5 years with no outside income or help other than my own. I got off probation 4.5 years early and got my expungement. During this whole time I had a recruiter telling me "oh yeah, you know get this stuff taken care of and we'll get you in!" the day my expungement went through and I had all the necessary paperwork to prove my termination from probation and expungement I went up and got the paper work I needed to enlist. Eventually got it all filled out and turned it in. Three weeks later i call my recruiter and he says "oh yeahhh, the day after you turned in your paperwork we found out there's nothing we could do for you." I would give or do anything to have the chance to serve my country. I was always an upstanding citizen before and after my conviction. Now, even after an expungement my life is still restricted due to my past thanks to it not TRULY being expunged. I wish the restrictions for felons not being able to join would be lifted. A judge deemed to give me a second chance, I think society should do the same.REPORT COMMENTS

im a convicted felon, i was charged with 3 counts of reckless endangerment in one day, i was 17 years old and joining the military was always my dream, i feel felons should be given a second chance to prove themselves, i feel at least the government should set up a program where felons can join before joining the military to prove they deserve a second chance.
